Hmm i'm starting to lean against a 6990 now, need something to replace a 8800gt.
Whats this dual bios shit?
Jesus fucking christ that thing is burning.
Those hyped vapour chambers don't seem to do shit. they obviously need to redesign cooling system for top cards.

$700 GTX 590 vs $710 6990
I don't think someone spending $700 on a gpu is going to not buy one because it is $10 more. Plus, the EVGA 590 on newegg is $730 if you want to nitpick.
with all the nitpicking you're doing you'd think you'd say a $10 difference was substantial

590 may be quieter, but it's literally burning. 112C, you could boil water on the back of that thing. Or actually cook a steak maybe?
I always wanted to make a case that worked like that. Something that vented the air directly outdoors.

doesn't matter, a difference is a difference.

I love looking at ratings on serious posts, they are so revealing and it's ridiculously easy to predict the exact people that are going to rate and what they're going to rate
eg every single time I ever say anything positive about NVIDIA, I get a dumb from Dark-Energy, rusty, thrawn and a whole bunch of other guys. I even got banned due to rusty's obvious bias. The same happens whenever I say anything negative about AMD, and vice versa

Why not try lightening up a bit?
I already feel like my GTX 460 is outdated now. :smith:
12 layers? And I thought the PCB with 4 layers I currently work on is enough. I should rethink about it (12, holy shit!)

Squandered nothing; It was written in his will that it be used for that purpose. If you had read my (Now year old) build thread instead of jumping right to shitting on it for not having a Nvidia GPU, you would know that.
Thanks for proving my point.

It's an intentional feature, it prevents the possibility of short-circuiting the board by instantly vaporising anything that comes within 5 millimeters

haha what?
do you mean this thread: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/934831-Getting-ready-to-upgrade-my-PC-Throw-in-any-suggestions-you-may-have
where I told you to stop messing around with the stupid Hydra bullshit and to go with an i5 to save yourself money so you could buy a 5870 and GTX 480 to test on both brands
you then proceeded to regurgitate all the stupid GF110 memes after saying you wanted a card from both brands for testing and kept trying to argue that Hydra was good technology
And now for today's demonstration of why it is important to have more than one tech review site.
Reviews of the GeForce GTX 590 found that, while it used more power than a Radeon HD 6990, it was considerably less noisy and actually kept the GPUs cooler. Normally this would mean that the GeForce GTX 590 has a much better cooling system. This would be something of a surprise, as AMD put the best cooler that they could on the Radeon HD 6990, and wasn't trying to cut corners here.
Now, temperatures aren't important for their own sake. Rather, what matters is that the card should be reliable, in terms of not crashing, not being forced to clock down, and not dying entirely. Several sites had their GeForce GTX 590 die in the process of the review, and SweClockers notably caught it on video. That didn't happen with the Radeon HD 6990.
One French tech site takes thermal images of their cards as a normal part of their review, rather than merely trusting the thermal sensors in the GPU. And they managed to explain why GTX 590s were dying and Radeon HD 6990s weren't.
Look at the thermal image for the Radeon HD 6990 at load:
http://www.hardware.fr/articles/822-...s-records.html
The site is in French, but the pictures are pretty self-explanatory. The GPUs touch 90 C, but most of the rest of the card stays below 80 C, and substantial portions of it below 70 C. That's hotter than desirable, but more or less safe.
Now compare the GeForce GTX 590:
http://www.hardware.fr/articles/825-...e-gtx-590.html
Nearly the entire card is over 80 C, and a majority of it is over 90 C. Oddly enough, the GPUs are not the hottest part. The peak temperature of the card is 111.9 C. 80 C is probably safe, but 112 C sure isn't. That's how you end up frying power circuitry as several sites did.
The GeForce GTX 590s that died didn't have the GPUs fry. They had various power circuitry fry. While the GPUs put out most of the heat, they're not the only parts that need to stay cool. Pushing components to 110 C while heavily stressing them is a way to end up with dead hardware.
AMD learned this lesson with the Radeon HD 5970, which didn't properly cool the VRMs. The card was intended to be overclocked to 5870 stock speeds, but the VRM cooling was insufficient for this. That was AMD's first effort at a card that goes over the 300 W cap of the PCI Express specification. The Radeon HD 6990 was AMD's second such effort.
Meanwhile, the GeForce GTX 590 was Nvidia's first effort at such a card. And they botched it badly. The GeForce GTX 590 is a bad card, and should not be purchased.
Nvidia is claiming that it's bad drivers that fried the cards, in which case, it would a colossal screw-up to ship a card with drivers that will kill the card. But drivers can't see the power circuitry, and that's what's dying, not silicon. Drivers can only help with that indirectly, either by reducing heat output or increasing airflow. The former means that performance falls ever further behind the Radeon HD 6990, so that the card would be markedly slower than reviews indicated. The latter means turning up fans higher, in which case, you lose the noise advantage.
From someone who follows computer tech closely and is actually independent. (not me).
There's really no point in arguing over the temps, the kind of people that buy these cards are most likely going to use watercooling anyway.
[editline]26th March 2011[/editline]
And then throw them out a few months later when another card comes out.
i think instead of dumping water on the reactors in fukushima we need to be dumping it on Nvidia's headquarters

What drivers is he talking about
There's no doubt that nvidia cards perform better that ATI cards, but seeing as nvidia's cards cost hundreds of pounds more than their ATI counterparts, I just don't think it's worth it. Especially for just a few frames more.

Why are you so obsessed with how people rate other people?
[editline]26th March 2011[/editline]
including you
I don't know why people are considering that the 6990 and GTX 590 are similar in price. In Australia, the cheapest 6990 was $799, whereas the cheapest 590 was $949.

it's an observation
No, you're just acting like it's an observation to cover up for the obsession you have when people rate you dumb and you do it because you can't accept that people simply have different opinions than yours but you form this dumb conspiracy that everyone is ganging up on you every chance and it's all over a simple disagreement but you're too arrogant to realize that.
eg every single time I ever say anything positive about NVIDIA, I get a dumb from Dark-Energy, rusty, thrawn and a whole bunch of other guys. I even got banned due to rusty's obvious bias. The same happens whenever I say anything negative about AMD, and vice versa
This seems to be a pretty typical attitude with you and a few other people in this section and it's just funny to see how you always have to be right and anyone who disagrees with relatively good reason is automatically subject to these ridiculous accusations.
Also implying anything positive you say about Nvidia isn't entirely subjective or also biased and same goes with your so-called negativity about AMD which I could have my 2 cents with both of those types of comments but I choose to stay out of it completely to avoid the resulting shitstorm as seen from Roadhog2k5's post.
[editline]26th March 2011[/editline]
Seriously man, you'd think after 2-3 bans for lashing out like a child you would at least think some of the problem is on your part...that's just asinine
ah dark energy and odellus still at it after 4 years? hardware and software hasn't changed yet.
The 590 is a good card, The 6990 is a good card, and that's that. nothing more to say. they're about the same price and preform about the same. it's the users choice on which one they want for now.
Even if it's a rumour, I posted my theory that Nvidia would've done something like this.
