It sounds like you have had an isolated case. They seem very good from my experience.
I live near Glasgow, a friend in London has had similar issues with them.
eww
That's higher than Average of Europe
I'm with Be, i get up to 24mb download and 1.3mb upload for 17.50 a month. I downloaded over 100Gb+ in some months and never had any problems. Best ISP i have had and don't be put off by the website, they redesigned it in the last few months.
Oh and just for the record, I sync at the full 24mbit and I'm like 1km away from my exchange. 2.25MB/s throughput via Newsgroups from Astraweb for me. :D
Confirmed. But, they (at least used to..) supply Netgear DG834GT's.
They gave us a Sagem router and we only switched to them a couple of months ago.

Sky up to 8mb/s (I believe) This must be a good day, it's never usually this fast.
Sky is awful, my friend gets really shitty speeds and just loses all connection about a dozen times a day for 10 minutes or so [editline]11:52PM[/editline] haha, what a coincidence, his connection's just gone
Back when Virgin was Telewest / Blueyonder, it was epic, the customer support were pretty good also. You could actually phone up and have a talk about hardware if you really wanted to. But as of the past 3-4 months I've had cut outs, varying from minutes to an hour (this is for the both TV and Internet) and the entire area has experienced this. The techie they sent out saw the problem, and it also occured at other houses that were reporting the same problem. Yet a month since he's came, there's been no change. It occurs slightly less frequently, but then again as of late I havent been at my pc that much. Never happens after 9pm though, probably because most people have gone to bed. (On the 10mb package, aka Large)
You pay for UP TO x mbps. I pay for 10mbps, I get 10mbps.
But how much do you pay?
You pay for UP TO x mbps. I pay for 10mbps, I get 10mbps.
I pay for 10 and get 20 :smug: silly Sky, taking away channels no one watches and getting us free upgrades in return... then giving us back the channels
Virgin of BeThere. Bound to have one of them available to you. I;ve been with virgin media for 9-going-10 years now (Back when it was Comcast (Mostly TV service)... Then NTL... And now Virgin media) and It's been rock solid, I have no plans to change.
I have sky and it's great. Always get a constant 1000KB/s (My phone line is limited to that unfortunately) No bandwidth caps, Cheap and they don't throttle anything. Their customer support isn't that great, but meh.. I never need it.
BE look great but unfortunately they don't include a line rental package. Seeing as our phone line is with AOL we need to switch that too.
Ill just drop something in on the Sky subject. Ive been with them for about a year now. Support isnt brilliant, but the service is pretty good. Having said that, its free for me. So no complaints about price. (Seems well priced even at full price). Most issues with ADSL come from your phone line, not your ISP. If you can proove that the line, or master socket is causing problems - BT will replace both the socket and cable to the nearest post FOR FREE.
For the last few weeks, O2/Be have been really really good! Look at this:
As you can see my internet is being very fast and reliable today! It's not frustrating at all.
20Mb
Having said that, its free for me.
How'd you manage that?
Do not touch BT with a fucking infinity long stick.
For Virgin Cable users having issues, please see: www.cableforum.co.uk They are excellent at advising/getting things done and have connections high up in the company. Honestly though, from all of you it seems only 1 - 2 people know why ADSL is less reliable speedwise than Cable. It's because it uses your phoneline, an old piece of copper (or sometimes Aluminium) cable with limited shielding placed underground many many years ago (upto 60+ in some cases). The limits of your "UPTO 8Mb/s" service are put into place by this one piece of cabling. So, all the companies offering 8Mb/s could provide it, if only your line was better. Now, cable. The actual cable to your dwelling is Co-Axial RG6 cable. It is relatively new, and was designed for high-bandwidth transfer. Because of this, the quality is much much better and the cable network can provide maximum speed at all distances (In Virgins case: 50Mb/s). The only problem with Cable is congestion, and that is the companies fault. It happens when too many people are connected to the same uBR (Universal Broadband Router) which they use to connect to their backbone. So, in a quick rundown: ADSL = Limited by your shit piece of copper line Cable = Limited by the amount of people connected to the same piece of hardware (Usually not an issue). The best UK ADSL Providers are as follows: O2, BeThere, Zen. The best UK Cable Provider is SmallWorldMedia, very closely followed by Virgin Media.
I'm on Orange. Pay for 8mbps Get 6.5mbps
I'm on Orange. Pay for 8mbps Get 6.5mbps
Which is completely useless, unless you live in his basement. That 6.5Mb/s is limited by your phoneline. How about some real details? Customer Service? Reliability? Downtime? Free upgrades? [editline]09:37AM[/editline] @ The OP: Try out http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php enter your PostCode. It will tell you what is available in your area.
Ping Test looks good If only speed test was as good 10 mbps And for a laugh
Virgin is good if you live in a suburban area, if you live in a built up area you get throttled to shit.

Most people in my street have talktalk and Sky, they get about 4-5mb down [editline]01:38PM[/editline] That's with Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 29.5 / 47.0
Well despite what everyone's saying about Tiscali, I'm with them and am overall very happy with the service. Not had any problems with the line, we pay for up to 8mb/s and I'm getting about 7.31mb/s which is perfectly reasonable. The upload leaves a lot to be desired but I'm rarely uploading anything large enough to warrent anything faster that what I recieve. It's not normally this bad :\ But definitely don't go with BT.
Do you live inside the exchange?
I'm think I'm fairly close to one.
I've got PlusNET for something like £14 a month for an 8mb unlimited connection that has fair usage applied so it slows to 3mb at peak times.
I'm also going to say don't get BT. I've been on them for a while, and half way through september last month, they apparently limited my speed to 1mbps for the rest of the month for using over 100GB or something. 100GB? Seriously, I do alot of gaming, but nothing like that. and besides that they tend to fuck up a little bit, and I started off getting my told 6-8mb, but it gets slower and slower.
