• Weird performance issues in certain games

My relativity new system has some weird performance issues in games that it definitely shouldn't have any issues with. I will be using approximate PassMark benchmark scores to compare my hardware with system requirements of games I have issues with. My System:
Core 2 Duo E7600 @ 3.06Ghz / score 2000 4GB DDR3 RAM GeForce 250 GTS / score 1000 Windows 7 64 bit
List of games I have issues with RAGE
Minimum Requirements: Core 2 Duo E4400 / score 1000 2GB RAM GeForce GT 220 / score 500 Recommended Requirements: Core 2 Quad Q6600 / score 3000 4GB RAM GeForce GTX 9800 / score 1000
As you can see my system is way ahead of MinReq and a bit below RecReq but it's still struggling with 5(!)fps every time I turn 180 degrees on minimum settings. Down of War: Dark Crusade
Recommended Requirements: Pentium 4 2.0Ghz 512MB RAM Any GPU than can handle DX9
This is a joke. Ancient game like DoW 1 on my system but still, when I get around 3-4 squads on screen at the same time FPS drops to 15. Prototype
Recommended Requirements: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 GHz 2GB RAM nVidia GeForce 8800 / score 800
Again, my system is above RecReq and still, on minimum settings when I get on a high building and get to see the whole city, my fps drops below 30. Stronghold 3
Recommended Requirements: Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHz / score 1200 3GB RAM GeForce 9600 GSO 512 MB / score 600
Yet again, well above the Recommended Requirements and still, unless I play on minimum settings, is barely gives me 25 fps. I've tried installing newest drivers for everything, shitting down all applications to clear the RAM, checking for viruses. Nothing helps. It's incredibly annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be the problem?
There could be something odd set in the nvidia control panel. Open the nvidia control panel, and select manage 3d settings. Click the restore button and click apply. See if that fixes the problem
There could be something odd set in the nvidia control panel. Open the nvidia control panel, and select manage 3d settings. Click the restore button and click apply. See if that fixes the problem
I use Nvidia Control Panel often (I like forcing AA in games) but in all of the games that I have problems with, first thing I did is to revert their setting back to default so that shouldn't be the issue. EDIT: tried reverting ALL settings back to default. Didn't help.
RAGE As you can see my system is way ahead of MinReq and a bit below RecReq but it's still struggling with 5(!)fps every time I turn 180 degrees on minimum settings.
Rage's PC port was considerably awful, even with it's update. The problem with Rage was texture pop-ins. (multithreading?)
Rage's PC port was considerably awful, even with it's update. The problem with Rage was texture pop-ins. (multithreading?)
Still, I was kind of expecting to be able to play at least at 30fps in lowest settings, considering that my machine is a bit above minimal requirements.
Noticed even more weirdness yesterday in the game Hard Reset. All graphic setting on Low. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/BB2Sh.jpg[/img_thumb] All graphic setting on Ultra. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/68hZP.jpg[/img_thumb] Both setting gave me exactly between 20 and 23 fps on this very shot even though you can see, there's a HUGE visual difference. Just like all previous examples, my system is way above minimum requirements for the game. I'm starting to get quite pissed off, mostly because I have no idea what the hell is going on.
Try updating your drivers.
I specifically wrote in the OP that I already did that.
Have you tried plugging out the GPU and then plugging it back together?
Don't see how that would help but since I don't have any better ideas, I'll give it a shot.
You could have a bad stick of RAM. I know it might be a long shot, but it's probably worth trying. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, try pulling one at a time and seeing if performance is better, or get access to other RAM to test with. Back when I built my PC I had all sorts of issues in games, completely erratic, only affected certain games, could have been frame rate problems or crashing. I thought it was my video card so I contacted EVGA support and they even had me run a software RAM test that detected no problems. One of their forum mods said to physically pull one, and lo and behold it was bad RAM.
I ran memtest for a while, it found no problems, so it shouldn't be RAM.
I ran memtest for hours and it found no problem, I pulled a physical stick of RAM the it was completely fixed.
Whatever, there's no harm in trying, I guess. I'm kind of desperate for a solution here.
What kind of background programs do you have running regularly? Also, is there a low-power setting that may have been enabled inadvertently in the Nvidia control panel?
What kind of background programs do you have running regularly? Also, is there a low-power setting that may have been enabled inadvertently in the Nvidia control panel?
All background programs don't use more than 5-10% of CPU and more than 0.5-1GB of RAM, so it's not that. I defaulted Nvidia settings several times so it's not that either.
Have you run any CPU/GPU stress tests to determine which is causing the lag? It may be time to cut your losses and RMA the responsible hardware.
Check your temperatures maybe? I might have missed it in the OP if you did say you did it, but something might have gone weird and started overheating.
Check your temperatures maybe? I might have missed it in the OP if you did say you did it, but something might have gone weird and started overheating.
Nothing is overheating, everything is at pretty stable 50 degrees.
it isn't by any chance a power settings thing, is it? I've had similar problems with mysterious performance issues and stumbled across power options to find that it was set to 'power saver'
