leaked data about the psp 2 says it has 4 cell proccesors...
So it's 32-core? Bitchin.
So it's 32-core? Bitchin.
I don't think a cell processor is mandated to have 8 cores. I don't know much about them, but I would guess, cell processor doesn't mean an 8 core processor. I think it just refers to the architecture?
You don't buy a phone so you can just play games on it. If you want to play "actual games" buy a Nintendo handheld or a laptop.
Why would I buy more devices if one device can do what I need? I don't want to carry an mp3 player for music, a phone for calls and a handheld for games.
I don't think a cell processor is mandated to have 8 cores. I don't know much about them, but I would guess, cell processor doesn't mean an 8 core processor. I think it just refers to the architecture?
You're actually right, but I didn't want to explain all that for the sake of a joke. The Cell Broadband Engine Architecture(tm) is based on one (or more, theoretically) Power Processor Element, is essentially a 64-bit PowerPC processor like those in old Macs, with some enhancements like HyperThreading (not under that term, but it's the same thing). Attached to the PPE are multiple Synergistic Processor Elements, which are more like the processors in a graphics card than those on a CPU, with heavy emphasis on floating-point SIMD. While the architecture could work with any number of SPE's, the most common configuration is eight. However, the PS3 has one of them disabled, to allow for manufacturing failures. Since there's so many processors on one die, a failure on one would normally cause the entire die to be discarded. If one is allowed to be defective without causing problems, then you increase your yields by a significant amount. While the PS3 is the most well-known Cell system, there are others. IBM has a series of servers based on Cell, with a full eight SPEs, and several companies have made PCIe cards with 4 SPEs for use in scientific computing. There are also some HDTVs with Cell processors built in. Most interestingly, the Roadrunner supercomputer uses a mix of 12,960 8-SPE Cell processors and 6,480 dual-core Opterons. It's actually pretty impressive: over a hundred terabytes of RAM, 2.35 megawatts of power, over 130,000 cores total... it's a beast. Anyways, yeah, you were right, and I was just leaving info out for the sake of the joke.
Is this really necessary?
That is exactly what I was thinking. It's not like full-fledged games are going to come out for phones now.
That is exactly what I was thinking. it will be nice, to one day just have to hook up your phone to a monitor, have a controller and play games, not needing a bulky PC or console
I can't think of one thing a phone would need a quad-core for.
I can't think of one thing a phone would need a quad-core for.
HD Video encoding. In your pocket.
Sooner or later, either Nvidia or AMD But will it run Crysis? it's safe to say some guy will try overclocking his phone, if it hasn't been done already. better yet a tiny pocket watercooling loop.
I already overclocked my phone to 1.2ghz
Sooner or later, either Nvidia or AMD will cotton on and produce mobile phone graphics chips.
For people like me who encode Blu-ray movies to H.264 (.m2ts container) @ 1920x1080, yes. For the average home user, no.
At least you think you do...
HD Video encoding. In your pocket.
they already do 720p playback and 1080p playback is in a month or two, whose to say they won't be able to encode 6 months from now when dual-core and 2ghz single core are commonplace like 1ghz is now. [editline]10:23PM[/editline]
The Adreno GPU is by ATI and the Tegra gpu is by nVidia.
Adreno was bought by Qualcomm quite some time ago, and they unfortunately haven't really done jack shit with it. i'm hoping they do, though, but it's not really looking like it [editline]10:26PM[/editline]
I can't think of one thing a phone would need a quad-core for.
what's interesting is there's always a selection of people that say this everytime something new is introduced to anything. just with phones themselves - "I can't think of one reason why a phone should have: a QWERTY keyboard internet access a color screen a touch screen a camera a memory stick slot" and many many more - all/most of those are expected nowadays [editline]10:27PM[/editline] and i think the reasoning for this sort of ideology is: it's not available yet. for some people, unless they have it or they can at least try it out, they don't appreciate the potential value. [editline]10:29PM[/editline] because people said/say the same thing about DVD, widescreen, HDTV, Blu-Ray, Tivo, LCD monitors
