Welcome to CIPWTTKT&GC, this thread started out in 2009 as a thread to point and laugh at generally computer illiterate people who the poster had come across, over time however this has become a more general chat for the Hardware And Software forums with actual content similar to the original becoming a rarer breed.
In addition to this thread we also have a [Steam Group] and an IRC channel
Server: benjeffery.ca
Port: 6667
Channel: #cipwttkt
Google hangouts do occur on occasion however this is usually done on a whenever basis, with many arranged at short notice.
Please try and not go all out fanboy in this thread, nobody wants a thread shat up to high heaven with un-constructive Windows V Linux posts. (Or similar) In general please try to keep things related to the actual topics we are supposed to discuss in this section of the forum. Try to keep a cool head and not stir up drama.

Speaking of massive regret and personal responsibility.
BackSapper.
Was there already a thread chooser? I mentioned it early, only saw one have a title. :(
Title could be worse I guess.
Give me Dongles or Give me Death.

Jesus christ, people have gone mad naming things.
Get the R7 1700, it overclocks to either the same speed or 100 MHz less than an 1800x for like half the price. Spend the extra on a nice cooler and be happy.
OK so get the 1700 and not the 1700X, and get some good liquid cooler. Any recommendations?
I was also gonna just go to Part Picker (Canada) and look at existing builds and build on top of it or something.
I'd want a case with USB 3 ports on the front, not retarded hard drive caddie/enclosures (so tool-free to an extent) and space for plenty of drives (so ATX) so time to start looking.
I don't have to get everything off Amazon but if the price is right on Prime Day, I'll go for it.

Sorry it was all I could think of without any major events happening in sipwicket recently and nobody else suggested anything :v:
Though we never did use "I'm literally retarded in anything real world" or whatever it was

NH-D15.

+1 on that. The Noctua stuff is fantastic.
My internship is gonna be paying pretty well and since 1070 prices are absolutely fucked, I think I might just get a 1080 :v:
Ryzen 5 1600 at 3.8Ghz shouldn't be a bottleneck right? Also, how's a 550W PSU at 40A on the 12v rail? Should I get a beefier one?
Oh and I really enjoy building in Corsair cases if you want ease of install.
Some Cooler Master cases have some dumb caddy's that make you feel like you're going to snap them when you try to install a drive. Unless that was changed recently.
Corsair, Phanteks, NZXT, Fractal, can't go wrong with any of those generally
[sp]CaseLabs too[/sp]

Yeah I remember reading about how mining coins and shit is super efficient on the 1070s (which was what I was planning on getting) but now Part Picker is recommending 1080s because it's actually cheaper than the 1070s in some cases.
IIRC 1080 uses GDDR5X which is no good for mining for whatever reason while the 1070 uses GDDR5.

Erm. DDR5 doesn't exist yet. 1070 uses GDDR5, 1080 uses GDDR5X. 5X is just higher perf 5, the reason why 1070's are semi-popular for it is it's in something of a sweet spot for price.

DDRx is best for mining
I fucking managed to put my password into my IRC window again because I was tabbed to the wrong window.

Does Keepass not run on XP or something?

what do you guys think about this? I want to finally get a rackmount and UPS for my server to move it around better.
I don't plan on putting much in it. But right now during the most intensive work with ALL 24 drives spinning it's at ~230watts.
[editline]6th July 2017[/editline]
Or maybe why bother and just get a cheaper normal unit: https://smile.amazon.com/CyberPower-CP1500PFCLCD-Sinewave-Compatible-Mini-Tower/dp/B00429N192/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1499377396&sr=8-12&keywords=Rackmount%2BUPS&refinements=p_89%3ACyberPower&th=1 I want pure sinewave tho.
I was actually looking at the same exact thing for my rack earlier today :v:
Pure sinewave will cost you an arm and a dick tho. Unfortunately it's pretty much a requirement for my radio equipment.
wait that cheaper one is PSW
Pure sinewave in rack seems extra expensive. The normal desktop box seems much cheaper for the power.
wait that cheaper one is PSW
Both are. I want to move to all pure.
The 1U would be a lot cleaner in your rack and you get SNMP.
Yea but is that worth an extra like ~200 bucks or something? Not for me. If they had one with just rackmount, I'd be good. Just the tidyness I want.
[editline]6th July 2017[/editline]
Went with the 810W desktop unit. I only have a single server and I'd check the power usage through USB by remoting into the server. Don't need network stuff.

I don't really play games that often anymore so I think I can get by with a 1060, even with my video editing and occasional VFX work. Video editing seems to be more CPU heavy in Premiere. I should probably also try using Davinci Resolve as that seems to actually use the GPU. Or I should go for the best single card, the 1080 which seems to be what every custom build editing computer uses now. Otherwise, I'd go for the middle and get the 1070 if the prices weren't dumb.
I thought 1060 prices were even worse
I can only find the 1060 3 GB wherever I look. Is it really that bad? Is the 6GB really worth $280? Anyone here have one? I don't intend to leave 1080p soon, so I don't think that's a problem.
Also I was going to buy the XPS 15 later in the fall. Is the 1050 version worth the extra battery space? I want the midrange i5 and I don't think you can get it without the 1050.

Plus if you did want to do it over the network you could just hook a pi to it and run APCUPSD which is the open source version of powerchute that I believe has precompiled arm packages.
