My favourite use for free 40u racks so far is a friend who got one, soundproofed it, added an exhaust fan and mounted his 3D printer into it, plus shelves for all his filament and spare parts
Nope. Not a good idea to do that any more for anything. Old lacks used wood. Cheap wood but wood. The new ones are cardboard. The strength of the whole things went down significantly, they can't support anything useful anymore.
What do you mean? They've always been particle board as far as I can remember. Still plenty enough to hold as many servers as you can fit into 1LU.

The legs are still wood as far as I can tell.

It's nothing like my old one and about 1/4 the weight.

Looks like they revised it again, or maybe it's a regional thing. [editline]13th July 2017[/editline] [t]https://shadower16.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/img_0106.jpg[/t]

Yeah, that is rather unfortunate, it does take a lot of use out of it. But IKEA really knows how to optimize their products and it would still work fine as a coffee table regardless.
I wonder how hard it'd be to cut a 40u rack in half and turn it into a 20, 'cause there's always one going for free on gumtree here :v:
I helped a buddy cut a fullsize rack in half and basically make two table height racks on coaster wheels. But it's easier when you have access to a shop with typical metalworking tools, including angle grinder and a welder.
My racks are built out of 2x4's.
I think a friend has a ton of the hardware (latches, corners, handles) for flight cases, I'm tempted to see if I can buy some off him and make a flight case rack [t]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2FwKmzoLVqg/WWd-NEOPi1I/AAAAAAAAQqU/j661rAnzphcGLPrTdrYlGbMgeuZTQ3sAgCHMYCw/s0/2017-07-14_00-05-38.png[/t] There's something I just love about how they look, and how they're actually somewhat movable [editline]14th July 2017[/editline] Only hard part is finding the rails cheap
So I've just realized, something is up with our home's power. During the night when I have my ceiling fan running I occasionally hear some short hums. At first I thought it was the bearings, but then noticed it sounded electrical. A few days ago I also heard it on a newly bought box fan, just in a different tone as it was coming from a different motor, but the timing of those hums were exactly the same. Then I also recalled that I sometimes heard some short hums during a Discord chat, but I thought that noise came from a friend. Last evening I paid attention and it's the EXACT same noise which comes from my brother's microphone. After a while I told my brother about me hearing those noises from my fans and he also hears it on his ceiling fan. I had Shadowplay running in the background while we were playing a game I and recorded it. It's not too audible however as we were blabbering over it, sorry for that. Linked it because huge. At 0:04 you can recognize the first hum originating from my brother's microphone. My microphone doesn't seem to be affected as it's USB powered, even though my computer is on the same circuit as my box fan is. [t]https://i.imgur.com/FMJGv83.png[/t] Electret microphones are extremely sensitive to EMI / RFI pickup, switch it to a USB one or use shielded cable, also make sure the computers are well grounded, using a good quality power filter may also help prevent the noise, ideally this should be installed on the fan(s) to keep the noise from leaking on to the power line.
Looks like Google removed the RMA hold on my credit card. Looks like they covered it 100% PogChamp
Google warranty's always been good to me I was immediately impressed when I submitted the claim and 2 minutes later got a phone call from an american. Every other RMA experience has been ring up, wait in queue for 30 minutes and then get connected to someone I can barely understand
Anyone here used InFlow? Please, share my pain.
A little bit for in home inventory. [editline]13th July 2017[/editline] Also Dell's released the new gen of servers, cool.
So there seems to be a trending towards a captcha to uninstall bloatware

My Windows install suddenly shit the bed 24 hours ago and its only now I'm starting to recover. Yet to know the true extent of the damage now. Save games, Doom mods among various bits of music and pictures may yet prove to be irrecoverable. The USB stick I tried to reinstall the OS on turned out to be bad and only by going back to Windows 7 temporarily from an old DVD about five years old saved my arse. This in my opinion is way worse than Pentiums horror story of modern hardware and software, for the love of god people please back your personal data up whenever you can, I didn't and I've ended up here wondering if I belong with Linus on the IT idiot blackboard and deserve to be kicked off my university course for being so naive.
Anyone know what the dedicated equivalent of an Intel HD 5500 is? Just curious as I remember doing some tests with an Ultrabook that had a 4000 in it a bunch of years ago, and by playing a bunch of old games such as Crysis and Oblivion and shit I found it pretty much performed the same as an 7800GT

A GeForce 710 or 720 is probably the closest you'll get. After all, if every consumer-level Intel chip has a GPU of that caliber, why would anyone buy a discrete card that isn't an upgrade?

Don't beat yourself up, it happens to the best of us. I had an SSD die years ago that had really important documents on it.
HD 630 graphics are pretty impressive, it can max out new games like POSTAL 2 without issues and handle GPU shader based video decoding that puts a GTX 460 at like 60-70% load.
new games like POSTAL 2
What time machine did you stumble out of? even the recent expansion is still based on a game engine that's probably over a decade old.
It's UE2, so... 16 years.
I'd imagine going by the Doom engine and Old School Runescape its probably had work done on it in that period to remove limitations to make new content at least a bit easier to create. Lost count the amount of times I've seen the devs for Old School Runescape go on about engine work for basic Quality Of Life improvements.

Holy shit, I got a new motherboard and ryzen 5, upgrading from my old i7-965....and Windows booted with only a minute or two of setup. [editline]13th July 2017[/editline] As in no reinstall, plug and play if I wasn't clear
The time is now 1500000000.
