That may be a problem with the latency of random file access on networked filesystems, iSCSI could work better, maybe.
SMB isn't really kind to random file access. Its better in SMB 3.0 than 2 and especially 1, but there is still a lot of overhead. We have a legacy application at work that works with flat database files and such, but its from the 90s, so its extremely chatty, reading and writing files constantly (like scrolling in a menu, shit you not). A lot of users complain about how slow it runs at times, even though they are barely touching 15% bandwidth use for the site and a 30 ms connection. They are simply dealing with 100 ms per file reaction times. Per file read.
I've had games on a gigabit nas via SMB for a while now, it's quite hit and miss. Some games work perfectly with just a little bit extra loading (MGSV), some games stutter when loading assets, and some games take so long to load it's not worth it (New doom).
I'm not experiencing any problems in doom. What does your setup look like? What is your latency to the NAS server?
I'm not experiencing any problems in doom. What does your setup look like? I think the issue is samba to windows kinda sucks generally, NFS performs better but I haven't bothered setting it up properly.
I run this machine from an NFS root and perf dies in any non-sequential access like compilation so i have my doubts NFS would do much better, btrfs can also add some latency. When I had a hard disk I used btrfs for a bit and it made TF2 and other source games stutter when loading audio files, something to do with copy on write or compression, i can't recall.
My computer restarted (thanks to a fun game of breaker box "Is it off? How about now?") and Explorer randomly unpinned itself from my taskbar?? :v: [editline]1st October 2017[/editline] I swear this computer and Windows install is just limping along, hoping to make it to black friday
Just created a iSCSI drive for testing. Thought the performance was trash but it was just a configuration error on my part, will install some games and then edit this post to let you guys know if performance is better or worse. The only difference in testing is that iSCSI has a 22MB/s increase in 4K Q32T1 write. Read is the same - I don't believe there will be any difference in gaming to be honest and I've never had issues with stutter or slow load on any game I've tested thus far on SMB.
Getting this ram running anywhere near its rated speeds will be the death of me.
Getting this ram running anywhere near its rated speeds will be the death of me.
I haven't even bothered trying to get mine to run at rated speeds. I tried turning XMP on once, it failed to boot, I reset and never touched it again. One of these days I'll make a proper attempt at it, but nothing I've done has been constrained by RAM, so I haven't had much reason to do so other than because I can.
It's frustrating especially since I'm on a ryzen build. Which anything over 2400mhz for my four ranks is considered overclocking.
In late July, I converted a bit of my mined Ethereum into Bitcoin and used it to prepurchase a TenX debit card, that works on the EMV network. You go to a shop with your card, it functions as a standard Visa card (in Europe, issued by Wave Crest Holdings Limited), and then TenX takes whatever cryptocurrency you've deposited with them, in exchange for the fiat that they then give to the vendor, via Visa. Last week, I got a temporary card from them, because they have fleshed out all the details yet. Used the card on Saturday to buy some energy drinks at a store, with Bitcoin (my account doesn't have Ethereum support yet). Feels good. Been letting that RX480 spin, nice to get something out of it occasionally.
So Newegg's site must have fucked up, I got a 2TB WD Black and a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo for free. Thought I had ordered some on the 2nd while I was still in Iraq, but when I got to Texas I went through my order history to make sure I had ordered everything for my new build and noticed no drives in the history. I then went through my credit card transactions and there was no charge anywhere, and the only email I had about it was a "you may have forgotten these in your cart" email, so I ordered the two items I intended on ordering. Now that I'm back in South Dakota, I opened up all the boxes to build my pc and now I have two WD Black 2TB and two 500GB 850 Evos.

It's not 3200MHz as the RAM is rated for but it's close enough. Any higher and it reboots and I don't feel like spending an hour trying to un-fuck it up anymore. It's not broken. I'm not going to try fixing it.
If I can sit on 2933 CL14 I think I'll be happy. I see good perf with it. Running the recommended 16 copies of HCI Memtest overnight to see if I get errors with it. If no errors, I'll save my settings and try to work back onto 3200. Maybe I need to play with ProcOCT more.

<cl10 is where it's at guys
After two BIOS updates I still can't run my memory at the proper timings because asus has their thumbs up their asses and won't fucking fix it when no other manufacturer's boards have this problem. I've fucking had it.
Tomorrow is the first day back for our kiwi coworker, as is customary his desk has been trashed. Mouse batteries flipped, a sheep taped over the sensor, the mouse then inserted into a balloon and inflated and put back on the desk with the other balloons. Additional sheep pictures hidden around everywhere. The one behind the monitor I'm sure will take some finding.

Uhm, so Backblaze and Carbonite and what not all complain about windows server. Backblaze B2 seems cheap, but it's a integration system. What's the best software for B2, to just get do backups like with Crashplan (Which no longer does Home) - as in, just select some folders and it performs backups at certain times..? EDIT: Seems like there's stuff like qBackup that seems closest (and as a bonus is free) Also, did I just screw up again and not use the question thread? :S
So after a night of testing, I think I'm stable on 2933 CL14 1TCommandRate. I'll use it for a few more days like this and then save these options in the BIOS. From there I might try moving to 3200 and see if I can tweak things.
I'm happy that my RAM worked at 2933 out of the box with an XMProfile (rated for 3000 apparently so close enough?) I consider trying to push it to 3200 for shits and giggles but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.
Holy fuck. I have fibre in my apartment and I looked at the options. 10/10 - 16€ 50/50 - 22€ 100/100 - 25€ 300/300 - 33€ 500/500 - 42€ 1G/1G - 99€ That's per month, no dumb caps or anything. Probs going for the 50/50 or 100/100 connection, the 10/10 is pretty slow sometimes.
Welp, time to finally upgrade my boyfriend's tired old GTX 560 Ti 448. Looking at a GTX 1050 ti or 1060. He's got a 1080p monitor and I've got a 1200p monitor. Worth it to spring the extra like $60 for a 6gb 1060? Is the 3gb model gonna limit us much? [editline]2nd October 2017[/editline] Or alternately is it worth it to buy a used GTX 980 (ti)?
thats good what board are you using again?
X370 Prime with 902 bios.
A 980ti would have a little more oomph than a 1050 or 1060
A 980ti would have a little more oomph than a 1050 or 1060
TIs are somewhat more expensive than a 1060, though. Where does a non-Ti come on the scale? I'm getting conflicting results.
TIs are somewhat more expensive than a 1060, though. Where does a non-Ti come on the scale? I'm getting conflicting results.
970s are about equal with 1060s, 980 would be a bit better 980ti more so.

However, that said, I know the games of next year probably won't be the same story. I'd say the extra for the 6GB version is worth it. I only got the 3GB because it was on sale and as an intermediate until I could save up for a 1080. Which version are you referring to? [editline]2nd October 2017[/editline]
Basically 980 = 1060 but with two extra gigs of VRAM. Same thing with the 980 Ti and 1070.
A 980 Ti is more expensive than some 1080s tho
