I blame cryptocurrency mining for inflating the prices.
One of my coworkers has 20 1080s split up across 3-4 mining rigs. He's nuts.
One of my coworkers has 20 1080s split up across 3-4 mining rigs. He's nuts.
Cryptocurrency is a clear mistake. What a waste of hardware, not even being used to help people, instead to just grind numbers for a virtual hash which is only "worth" something because others think its worth something. Honestly wish these miners would be forced to contribute to folding@home or something similar when they're doing coin mining.
I thought 1080s were crap for mining?
For Bitcoin yeah, but Vertcoin or anything else that's ASIC resistant, they're good.
For Bitcoin yeah, but Vertcoin or anything else that's ASIC resistant, they're good.
Maybe I was just confusing price/performance with actual mining perf, I just remember reading something about ETH mining a while back where 1080s were deemed as a poor choice for mining rigs
One of my coworkers has 20 1080s split up across 3-4 mining rigs. He's nuts.
my friends have a huge ass mining rig in their basement, along with a few rigs scattered in their rooms can't remember how many cards there are, but it's a lot iirc [t]https://i.imgur.com/UAlrZ46.jpg[/t] it's insane
Maybe I was just confusing price/performance with actual mining perf, I just remember reading something about ETH mining a while back where 1080s were deemed as a poor choice for mining rigs
Very, their hash rate is terrible for it. You're looking around 20 Mh/s for Ethereum which is a massive waste of hardware. For a card that is an entire generation behind, is less than half the price, a single RX 480 has a higher hashrate than a single GTX 1080 sitting at around 5~20Mh/s more depending on model. Still a mistake mining any of this shit.

I think I might have spoken about him earlier, he has like 3 Vives, both Oculus dev kits, 2 consumer Rifts, 2 PSVRs... Mining is still pretty dumb though and I really don't think people are making that much money off of it, especially when they dump like $1500 into GPUs upfront. I mostly do day trading and investments in crypto and have probably made at least as much if not more money than most miners.
Mining as a whole is such a disgusting waste of energy
Mining as a whole is such a disgusting waste of energy
Mine Coal to mine bitcoins
Mining as a whole is such a disgusting waste of energy
It is not a waste when you are in need of a space heater. I'd happily run a mining rig in my apartment for some times when it means I can get a bit warmer than 19C.

Even myself I'd want to move up north to have my server heat my room. Since I've paid to cool my room nonstop.
That slogan. That "actual size" on a PDF being viewed on a computer screen, and would probably be molested by scaling if you tried to print it. I'm so done right now. Same generic concept with cryptocurrency. Enough people agree it's worth something, so it's worth something.

Gold doesn't mean jackshit anymore. Still think its utterly stupid though, people see this stuff is worth something and jump on the bandwagon because mining is "making money out of thin air" to them.

Instead of hashing random numbers, each mining block is called a "smart contract", and runs code that performs useful functions towards some p2p applications instead.
Gold doesn't mean jackshit anymore.
lol no. Gold has had a long history of having a ton of intrinsic values, and it still does today. The price of gold has been fluctuating a lot lately, but that's far from calling it meaningless.

Yeah you can exchange gold for money and vice versa just like any other commodity, but its not what the world revolves around anymore.

Anyone have usb c dongle linux experience? I really want the xps 13 with that quad core i7 for work but they are worried about usb c and loonix [editline]2nd November 2017[/editline] It also has 2 usb 3.1 type As so dongels for these would work too We really just need 2 hdmi/dp, gbit ethernet and then 3 usb As for mouse/keyboard and usb stick
Mining as a whole is such a disgusting waste of energy
You have to remember it's not just "Run Miner -> Get Coin", the miners are literally what allows the blockchain to function It's like saying the mainframes handling banking transactions are a waste of energy
You have to remember it's not just "Run Miner -> Get Coin", the miners are literally what allows the blockchain to function It's like saying the mainframes handling banking transactions are a waste of energy
The mainframes handling banking transactions don't need to bruteforce random hash collisions 24/7 on top of it, consuming as much energy as a small country.

Even at current hashrates, the thousands of governments, banks and financial institutions that make it possible for me to do international banking are pretty competitive in terms of wastefulness.
It's all just capitalism
It's all just memes.
There are pretty good reasons why Ethereum is moving to POS in the future. Mainly the wasted electricity.
The mainframes handling banking transactions don't need to bruteforce random hash collisions 24/7 on top of it, consuming as much energy as a small country.
They do need unique key pairs for digital transactions generated from RNG's (often highly efficient ASIC's) Granted that's far more efficient that *coin mining, but that's how it operates. Donate computing power to secure transactions, get paid *coins in return.
my company announced their new 4K60 capture card. I hope to get mine soon to play with. Can hook it up to my GH5 for a 4k60 webcam :O
Well a recycled optiplex, a scavenged CX 500, and a purchased 1050ti later my roommate now has a workable gaming pc
4th roommate just ordered parts to turn another haswell optiplex into a midgrade gaming rig. The room with all our desks is getting a bit crowded.
