I think my job has reinforced my hatred of apple products
Need to replace a broken HDD in an iMac? Gut the entire computer including the screen and glass cover and all of its internal components. Then when its done they can have interns use and abuse it and do something stupid like dropping it on the floor again.
And now they're gonna order iMac pros.
Apple needs to make new cheese graters, i fend off all the vultures at work who want my dual Xeon 2012 Mac Pro because they hate their trashcans.
Hardware issue with apple product are such pain to deal with. For some reason their owners are also more stupid? I do not fix many mac machines, but the few that I must people own they come in constantly, repeated errors, clarification, or damage.
On linux, I use collectd, InfluxDB (if you use this, Telegraf which is made by the same people is probably a better option than collectd) and Grafana to make this:

Which can be accessed from anywhere on my LAN and potentially anywhere else if I wanted

I dropped dropbox when someone from Algeria logged in, and they did nothing to hinder them (not even notifying me, I had to notice myself on the security page)
It's 2017, blocking strange logins should be some of the most basic first line account security defenses in place
Zabbix is a pretty well established one for tasks like this as well, not too hard to set up either. Same with Cacti, which is rock solid but ass ugly unless you want to put in some work.

Maybe, JUUUST maybe because it's primarily the IT equivalent of lolcows who fell for their marketing and hype?

they most are postermakers who buy new macbook pro and full Adobe Create Cloud to work

The younger production interns who are fresh out of high-school are just really reckless with the stuff they use. We shouldn't buy $2000 computers for people who beat the shit out of them :v:
Otherwise their very stubborn. We could build windows machines in house for editing which are cheaper and far more powerful. Yet we get Apple computers when Apple shows little interest in their desktop lineup anymore. But staff can't cope with the change. We have Xserves still too which have horseshit support, they need to be replaced but management is having anxiety over not having an Apple product for it now.
You still find the usual problems too with Mac's like Windows machines. 90% of the time I fix a Mac its because its been so loaded down with junk it can't process anymore.
I’ll still use a MacBook Pro over a windows laptop any day of the week for anything except games
Although that could change in the near future 🙂

I ended up finding out i have more dropbox accounts then i remember making.
But holy shit what a rollercoaster of emotions, i should probably reconsider how i store some of my data.
My hatred for recent dropbox decisions has convinced me to develop my own alternative

May as well just use Syncthing, it's pretty much self hosted dropbox. Use it on my servers, desktop, laptop, and phone. Get Sync trayzor if you need a Windows client.
But that’s no fun
As a counterpoint just statistically in the office I work in, the number of support tickets over time to fix shit on workstations went down drastically when we transitioned to Macs.
IBM also published this report claiming transitioning to Macs actually saves them a shitton of money because of the lower support costs.

Thats why I mention user, when you give user choice to buy, the kind of messy user is probably the one to buy mac. I have no doubt thinking full switch to apple would reduce support cost.

I don't have a problem with the office using Macs, but if they could back to making computers that are more accessible hardware wise like the cheese graters. It would be so much more better.
They don't cater to enterprise enviroments very well at all, and I think they're overlooking a major market in pursuit of mobile.

that's the plan for the next mac pro refresh in 2018
https://www.macrumors.com/2017/04/04/apple-updates-mac-pro-and-more/
they even admit that the trash can design was less than optimal
Yeah but they have the iMac Pro which is just another locked down machine I think. Even though it finally has competitve hardware to match the price we're still going to be running thunderbolt drives everywhere which people can accidentally unplug and corrupt :v:
iMac Pro isn't gonna replace the Mac Pro. to me the iMac pro seemed like a response to the surface studio
[editline]22nd July 2017[/editline]
tho talk is cheap. i personally don't care about the imac or mac pro but it would be nice to see a movement towards modular hardware for their desktop line.
we'll just have to see in 2018

Finally bought my flights for PAX West. Went with Delta "comfort+" basically premium economy. It's a long trip from Florida to Seattle and back and I'm decently tall so I was worried about comfort. And since my hotel is actually covered by Twitch, I can save like a fuck ton of money and put it into a nicer flight.
Feel so lost in all of it.
Speaking of iMacs, I'm getting a new everything-not-gaming desktop soon as my A8 system running fedora is getting quite long in the tooth. Probably heading back to MacOS for this so it looks like I have two options. Should I get a 5k iMac or go for a hackintosh with dual Dell U2515H's?
5k is a meme but I dunno about Hackintosh per se. I love my Thinkpad Hackintosh but in the future I think I'm just gonna get a MacBook Pro.

comfort+ also gets you free booze
last time i flew comfort+ i wasn't 21 and i was so tempted to ask for a drink but it would've been awkward if they carded me
Last flight I went on I just got drunk at the bar and then got free coffee on the plane.

supposedly they had beer but they didn't offer it to anyone

If they actually end up getting around to updating the Mini I'd just get that and call it a day.
Hackintosh is kinda eh, if you want something serious I would go for the iMac.

That's due to Windows being a undeniably hot piece of garbage that's only kept alive because so many programs only work natively on their platform.

The iMac raises my costs by 800 is the big reason I'd rather not.

Kinda reminds me how ms-dos was used for games and windows for serious stuff.
Times changed, windows is the ms-dos of our era.

Reason for that back in the days, was less resources spent on the Operating System itself, basically running the games almost bare-metal on the hardware.
And later on backwards compatibility for those who still had shit computers.

You can find the Win2K source code, and it probably isn't even that different :vs:
