Uni starts tomorrow, I am expecting to get shit on by a firewall.
I set up a free VM down at Melb Uni with 70GB of storage, I might close my digitalocean and migrate some smaller shit to it. It's meant for research, but I ran steam servers on it for at least two months at my old uni.
anyhow, I configured my tablet to run openvpn to this vm, and most education and research facilities in the country are all connected on a private internet connection, I'm expecting some dank ass speeds, at least over an Ethernet, wireless hasn't really been tested. But critically, jumping the firewall to an endpoint 1.5Km down the road, on a private internet connection, I can finally finish that DOOM update.
I'd imagine the look on ITS' faces when they see one user just always logging in from a competitors campus IP allocation

Been using nVidia at least as far back as the 7000 series and I'm waiting for Volta to come out anyway but maybe there's some hope left for Vega. Shit, I was on Intel since at least as far back as Wolfdale but then Ryzen came along.
Maybe I'm just jaded after how disappointing RX Vega was, I know it's not indicative of gaming performance but it was just so underwhelming.

I mean if whatever amd pushes out costs the same or less and does better than the 1080 Ti I literally just bought, I'd swap it out. Hopefully it gets announced soon and is actually available sooner than later.
Took my old Nvidia GTX 960 and 2x4GB DDR4 RAM to CeX and got £105. Pretty happy.
Other than the fact I accidentally scammed them since I brought everything in the new boxes and the cashier processed the RAM as 2x8GB sticks (because they were in the new box for 2x8GB sticks even though the label on the actual sticks she was reading from clearly said 4GB).
I have the cash now though.
To be fair, serves them right. Their hardware test was literally 'does it smell burnt?'.
"Does it smell burnt?"
"Nah but it's filled with spiders"
"Spiders are cool, they help absorb the heat and are crunchy"
"What?"
"What?"
I think the problem that Vega had is that it's been hyped up for the past two years, so when it finally comes out to be similar to NVIDIA cards but use more power, a lot of people got disappointed.
In the end, I'm happy there is competition again.
I wish more of the HEDT (X299, X399) didn't have rgb trash and a billion add-on accessories. It just raises the price on otherwise well engineered boards.
Basically I just want more boards like EVGA's x99 ones.
[T]https://images.evga.com/products/gallery/151-BE-E097-KR_XL_5.jpg[/t]
Wonderful silk screening on them, good power and peripheral header placement. Everything x299 looks rushed.

Not just HEDT. Anything above and including mid-range. RGB LED motherboards are the new cancer and I hate them. I want an elegant, classy system with a nondescript colour-scheme not some Razer Fatal1ty Gaming Edition crap. I don't want my PC lighting up my room with rainbows, and nice motherboards with the featureset and whatnot that you want always have that trash. All the nondescript one always have some kind of thing holding them back. It's awful.

It was quite weird.
I was literally just standing there at the counter as all of her colleagues smelt my graphics card and RAM.
Less RGB, more matte, down to earth colors please
Can't find a mouse for my mom to use at work that doesn't look like it's a freaking transformers
Cases are also either really big, bulky, "gaming" editions or just really bad cheap chinese ones that look (and feel) like cardboard boxes

My motherboard is black and white and RGB can be turned off. It didn't cost more than a comparable board of the previous generations. I don't know where your issue lies.

What board? Sounds a bit like what ASRock have been putting out with their Taichi boards.

I feel like the "gamer trash" phase for cases is over. Yes they are still out there but there are also tons of elegant looking cases.

Nah, ASUS Prime.
My board was $260 new but I got an open box deal on it, but it's also one of the nicest x370 boards currently. It's all black and the rgbs turn off if I want them.

Oh boy a heatwave next week, with record highs. I picked a great week to change my work schedule
Oh, well isn't that a fucking kick in the balls.
So I guess Youtube is fucking with shit again because it seems that whatever the fuck implimentation of HTML5 they used to support just got updated. Standards being standards, you wouldn't expect much to change but oh look, there was an addition of h.264 support being mandatory. Why the fuck was that not required from the start?
Sooooo, it seems that now Youtube will routinely give
"Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available" because you know, Flash is dead and whatever implimentation they have of HTML5 now demands browser side h.264 support of you can go fuck sheep.
Now for me just to upload my own videos I need TWO different machines. One that does the editing and proofing, the other just to play the video back on Youtube and verify stuff like links are applied properly.
Oh, and for just updating browsers? You know who I am. On XP, Chrome is dead, Firefox is dead, IE is junk and Opera has been six feet under for years. I fucking bet $50 this was intentional. Save for older videos it seems as of now all new videos are uploaded with this requirement attached, so slowly you are going to find you can't watch more and more videos.

it won't outperform a 1080 ti
From leaked benches of RX cards it outperforms a 1080 a little bit
I'm really confused regarding the whole VEGA thing, the frontier edition turned out to be very mediocre and all those leaked benchmarks show that it's really nothing special, yet they were very agressive with the whole teamred and poor volta ad. There's a lot of speculation going on, I guess the best thing to do is wait a couple of days for the release and hotfixes

There's speculation because the FE performed worse than a Vega prototype on Doom from months prior, and because clock-for-clock performs worse than the Fiji/Fury-X. So the thinking goes something is disabled/broken/old on the FE or its drivers.
We'll see soon enough.
Gotta say though, the RX Vega is a sexy beast:

Expect a huge push post-release, Vega has plenty of hype and doesn't need any help. AMD took the wise approach of staying quiet if there isn't anything to say.
I think they phoned it in, a bent piece of aluminium that looks like a block of aluminium is not exactly challenging design.

I do not have ANY video editing tools for the modern mac. The latest piece I have is Avid Videoshop 3.02 which was discontinued in 1997. Second to that someone gave me Final Cut Studio 5.1. The box, documentation, legal stuff and disc sleeves with registration keys but not the fucking discs.

Shouldn't you be developing a machine which caters towards more optimization and less "I dunno it rendered fine for me your computer must be old lol"
I'm not saying you should be using XP or even Windows 7. Windows 10 will suffice. Do your work on something half of what today we call "average spec" so you can realize how much people fucking hate developers that develop on black project supercomputers from space while 48% of their end users run on computers derived from potatoes.

What are you talking about? How is 264 something that requires a "black project supercomputers". 264 has been the gold standard for 10 years now.
