One thing I love with my X370 board. EIGHT native 6gbps. It's dope. I wanna get an m.2 then get eight 512GB SSD's for RAID10
Damn that's nice. The amount of SATA3 ports wasn't really on my radar when I was looking for a motherboard. The specs looked good enough tho. Sure SATA5 and SATA6 are disabled when you use an m.2 drive but whatever, it's good enough. Just more things to keep note of for future builds...
Why would sata 6 be disabled when you use an m.2 drive? Do they use the same pcie lanes? That sounds like a huge oversight
Really, be glad you did that to your local machine, not a remote machine. I did that when leaving to do something else once. I showed up half an hour late. Not smart.
When disabling unnecessary services on an IP cam, I accidentally unchecked everything, including the HTTP web configuration (apparently it is not idiot proof). And the camera was 250 miles away. Walking someone through how to factory reset it was not fun.
Why would sata 6 be disabled when you use an m.2 drive? Do they use the same pcie lanes? That sounds like a huge oversight
Supposedly.
Be warned that the manual/specs for this motherboard are confusing, if not outright deceptive! On page vii, the manual explicitly states that "when a SATA/PCIe mode M.2 device is installed, the M.2 socket shares bandwidth with the SATA6G_5/6 ports". One would reasonably take that to mean that you could have both installed, and that each would sacrifice a bit of performance/bandwidth for the sake of the other. In fact, they are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. They cannot "share" at all, in any conventional meaning of the word. If you install an M.2 drive, SATA ports 5/6 will be completely disabled. Gigabyte is entirely upfront and honest about this limitation, whereas Asus baited me into purchasing their board instead with this incredibly misleading language in the manual. It then took me about six go-rounds with their technical support to get them to admit/confirm this limitation. I've had good experiences with Asus in the past, but this has been frustrating and disappointing. Shame on Asus for their dishonest documentation!
https://www.newegg.ca/Product/SingleProductReview.aspx?ReviewID=4998789 I found out by reading more reviews after purchase. I probably should have read more reviews earlier but it seemed good enough so I didn't dig that deep into the reviews. Also that minor detail wouldn't be noticed unless you actually read through the documentation, found someone who noticed it and wrote it in a review, or tested it yourself.

Run it at the same time as you run command. If your changes dont break your network, control-c it and move on. This has saved my ass a few times.
This is a genius idea
A friend passed it on to me, and I'll pass it on to anyone who cares to listen. All I ask is that you do the same.
This is a genius idea [editline]16th August 2017[/editline] The fact that a PCIe m.2 disables SATA ports is stupid
I'm unconvinced that an NVME M.2 drive disables SATA. And if so, I'd be surprised if that's still the case given BIOS updates.
I'm unconvinced that an NVME M.2 drive disables SATA. How old is your PC???? [editline]16th August 2017[/editline] also the beer here is pretty nice
I used to have three SSDs in my computer, but I moved one into my windows server for database shit. Windows lol, Linux wouldn't have had to bother, technically. But I didn't want to install the OS onto a HDD in the bays, a SSD fits right where the disc drive would appear. Just a simple power cable converted from floppy to sata and it was good to go. I couldn't install windows into the micro sd card slot, thanks Microsoft + HP But now it's not a big deal. My new motherboard only has 6 SATA slots, sans the two extra on my z87-pro.
Apparently I got my order in early enough!

Don't click the links you got in the PMs. Just an advice. I had a looksie with Tor.

I have a small, potentially stupid question that I can't find on Google ANYWHERE. On my work machine I can type "putty <Server name>" straight into windows search (ie, Windows key, type) and it will work and connect straightaway, but on my home desktop I can't. Is there a setting or environment variable I'm missing or something?
I'm unconvinced that an NVME M.2 drive disables SATA. And if so, I'd be surprised if that's still the case given BIOS updates.
Oh well, I'll find out if it's still the case eventually. The review is from almost a month ago and there was a BIOS update just last week. It didn't really specify anything beyond "Improve devices compatibility". A number of reviews from March also mention about the SATA5/6 being disabled when an m.2 drive is installed.

Before I cull my VPS since I'm not using it I thought I may drop by and ask what I could make of it instead. It's a 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz single-core VPS with a 20 GB SSD. Got any ideas of something useful I could turn it into?
Part of the reason I water cool. My 290x is quiet as hell.
My 290x is silent as fuck and air cooled, the reference blowers AMD has been using over the last few years are just really fucking loud, but pretty decent at getting rid of heat. But really fucking loud.
My aircooled 980 Ti is silent :vs:
My 1070 is the same. Jesus I get the cards are supposed to be blower style, but it could be a hell of a lot more quiet. I'm interested to see how the 3rd party cards look in terms of thermals and noise.
