Installed OpenWrt on my TP-Link that I bought some time ago.
That, was a bit of work. A simple how-to:
1) Flash an old version of the official firmware through TFTP, which has worse signature checking than the new version your router shipped with
2) Flash an ancient version of DD-WRT that has been modified to pass the slightly-worse checks in the slightly-older official firmware
3) Flash an even older version of the official firmware through DD-WRT which has even worse security checks
4) Flash OpenWrt
5) Go fuck yourself
Are those conventional PCI slots? How old is your PC????
[editline]16th August 2017[/editline]
also the beer here is pretty nice
Wait, is it the norm now not to have PCI slots? Genuine question. I haven't looked at motherboards for probably 5 years now.

This actually surprised me too when I jumped to a high-end Haswell board last year from Nehalem
I didn't know the OG PCI slots were outmoded, it kind of surprised me.
And pissed me off because it meant my Xonar DG was useless. :(

I mean what exactly do you still need PCI slots for?
My work: You should only install VS Professional, we can't afford to give Enterprise licenses for everyone.
Also my work: You need to debug the unit tests that use the Microsoft Fakes Framework that only ships with VS Enterprise and Ultimate.

A DG is pretty useless anyways with a good onboard chip nowadays
Random reboot and a missing BOOTMGR is always nice.
A DG is pretty useless anyways with a good onboard chip nowadays
Sadly the onboard on that board was pretty garbage.
I have a Xonar DSX now, but it's mostly so it can actually drive my headphones and my microphone properly.
Doesn't list either of the Windows installs on the Repair menu (got an old 80gb HDD that I haven't gotten around to cleaning yet) and the Windows Install menu shows the SSD with Total and Free Space of 0.0 MB.
...did the SSD crap out? Ah man.
The boot menu just shows it as SandForce{200026BB}, but I don't remember if it was different before.
[editline]18th August 2017[/editline]
And can't boot from the old HDD either, gives BOOTMGR missing too.

I'd Imagine a high end haswell board beats the DG.
Of course trying to install a new Windows on the old 80gb HDD gives an unable to create new system partition or locate an existing system partition. Fucking hell. I'll think on it tomorrow, now pizza.
I mean what exactly do you still need PCI slots for?
Only thing I still use it for is a Xonar DG because it sounds noticeably better than my onboard and less buggy (as already mentioned, go figure). I'm not heartbroken, there just has always been at least one PCI slot. :v:
So I'm about to buy the laptop. Is the XPS15 still the one people recommend? I've heard lots of QC issues relating to it so I'm a little hesitant. Especially when dropping two g rand.
Still have no pricing on vega 56 but vega 64 are $899 (single shop with it at $729 but that's never going to be in stock) here without the monitor or cpu discounts.
GTX 1080s start at $699 (and are in stock) with half the power draw and non reference designs.
What is the point of RX vega at this point? Performance is worse than pascal, uses fuck loads of power, doesn't even cost less.

Beefier compute, I guess.

I had it for some period of time and have used it extensively for content creation and what not. Here's my pros/cons:
Pros:
The 1080p display model is actually 99% sRGB or something like that, so you don't have to get the 4K display model just to get the colour accuracy. You literally had to get the 4K display model for other laptops, otherwise you'd get a not-very-colour accurate 1080p display.
97WHr battery is plenty
You can add more RAM and change the SSD
Pretty compact charger
Trackpad is awesome with Windows Precision drivers. If you plan on using the trackpad a lot on any laptop, getting a laptop with Precision drivers is worth it.
It's so small and compact with the almost bezel less display
Dell docking solutions are pretty decent nowadays
Overall it feels nice and premium
Backlit keyboard
Cons:
Only 2 USB 3 ports. It should have had at least 3 imo.
The Thunderbolt 3 port is only half speed, but should be fine for the majority of people
Due to the compact size, it will throttle during high loads, as expected
Webcam is at a really awkward position but it doesn't matter if you aren't going to use it
Overall it's a nice, premium, powerful ultrabook. If you end up not liking it, you can always return it within a month.

My laptop has 5 USB 3.1 ports.
So then I think I might do it. Thanks for the information. Also can you say write off since like 3 of my jobs need it :smug:
Also since for most of my work I can just use Hubs, I'm not too concerned about that.

Then you might as well get the most decked out model with 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD while you're at it :v:
To be honest the XPS 15 is nice but at the end of the day it looks, feels and quacks like a consumer laptop
The only laptop of this generation that I actually love using consistently on its own is the T460(s)-T470(s) because nothing beats a matte screen, rigid chassis, ethernet port, fast fingerprint reader and good input options. It's annoying having to actually divert your attention to using a computer once you're used to just being able to work anywhere.
Anyone have a link to one of those CD images that boot and contain a bunch of useful BIOS tools?
I have a machine here where the BIOS password was set and forgotten. It's stored in flash memory so it also remembers it with the battery removed.
Booting from floppy was locked out but booting from a CD drive was not so that is my only way in.
[editline]sadas[/editline]
Right. Forgot about Hiren's Boot CD.

For the same reason Intel forced the death of ISA, PCI went the same way which meant that all the shit you previously put in the spare PCI slot now takes up a PCI Express 1x slot.
Of course, there are PCI express to PCI adapters so you get the external box and tell Intel to go fuck itself.

One thing that has infuriated me for quite some time:
Why does this adapter not exist for Type A Male to Type A Female
[t]https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1zbILQXXXXXbyaFXXq6xXFXXXE/Magnetic-Micro-USB-Female-to-Type-C-Male-Charger-Converter-For-LG-G6-G5-V20-Oneplus.jpg[/t]
You would think the usage of USB Type-A connectors is so popular that someone has to have made a port saver that harmlessly snaps off when tugged on instead of yanking the entire fucking device off the table and damaging the everloving shit out of the port.
USB ports are always the first things I wear out in a computer before anything else, why don't this shit exist? Has literally no one on the USB design board had a cable tugged on before?? DisplayPort cables are even worse too.
Hurrah, Hirens seems to not work on whatever the fuck this WhizPro BIOS is. Even the most destructive password nuker I can find on the disc isn't removing the password much less finding it.
Anyone got another idea?

Because I also want to get the extended warranty stuff, and going with that stuff would increase the price like 50%.

The SSD/RAM are standard off the shelf parts. You can always upgrade it yourself for less down the road.

That's what I was thinking go 16GB, 512. Enough for what I need. Always can upgrade it later.
[editline]19th August 2017[/editline]
I wanted to get it through the dell store for the extended warranty + accident. But it won't ship for 7-9 days. I'll leave probably by the time I get it. So forget it.
edit: what the fuck it's impossible to find a 1080p XPS15 laptop on anywhere besides dell.com
[editline]19th August 2017[/editline]
Just going to get a blade stealth off amazon. I cannot find a non ugly fucking non mac laptop.

It doesn't have a SD card slot, if that matters to you.
It'd be convenient. But I'd only use that when ingesting footage at a desk. And I have a nice new UHS2 reader with my Lexar card.
[editline]19th August 2017[/editline]
Put a payment on my amazon card, once the payment clears, going to order that and a couple more 2000x 64GB cards.
Niiice. Amazon is refunding me the money I spent on my eclipse glasses because they haven't heard from the supplier that they are in fact certified to not blind me.
I've looked at the sun with them on and they definitely work.
Ordered one of those super small, super cheap graphics tablets that osu players use (Huion H420).
Gonna try out OneNote with it, when it arrives. I've never had any good system for taking freeform notes, except for a pencil and a notebook.
