my cousin tried to download more ram and asked if he could cryptomine on a raspberry pi
Well technically you can mine cryptocurrencies on a Raspberry Pie...
It just won't be anything close to feasible :v:
We threw out some stuff at work and now I have a Dell Inspiron workstation from 2006 standing here with a Xeon 5130 @ 2 GHz, 4 GB of Ram, a Gforst Quadro FX 3500 and no HDD.
I think the only thing worth anything is the case itself. Ideas?
Also this thing gets fucking loud in BIOS since it sets all fans to max, holy moly.

If you don't have any other plans for it, sounds like you could max out/add more RAM and use it for a light-duty personal server as-is. Maybe you can also find a less wimpy CPU that's compatible and cheap to find on eBay.
I wouldn't even bother saving the case otherwise.
I'm just very amazed about the interior design from Dell, such a shame to throw it away just because it's old
I am transferring a VM from my laptop to my home server, over a 50 mbit internet line, with rsync. Depending on how well the particular part of the virtual hdd compresses, I get transfer speeds somewhere between 120 mbit to almost 1 Gbit. Gotta love that compression (when it is effective).

If it's standardized ATX, then it's still usable.
But if it's one of those funny Dell form factors that they were so silly with around that time, then it ain't worth it.
My new UPS came in. A pure sinewave UPS seems to weigh so much more. Must be beefier components. My simulated Sinewave UPS on my desk doesn't seem as hefty.
Not sure if I want to use the PSW one for my desk or for my server. The PSU I got for the server is platinum efficiency, a really nice one, so I assume PFC is a concern. Eventually I'll get another PSW UPS for my desk and keep my simulated for maybe consoles and stuff.
We use a 1350VA CyberPower PSW UPS that we run our game machines off of. With both plugged in going full tilt it gets under 5 minutes, but it's five minutes we wouldn't have had before.
I trust a UPS to either get me over brief drops or to keep the system alive long enough it can shut itself down.
i wonder why bring-your-own-battery UPSes aren't more common. All they really have are shitty Ni-Cd or deep cycle SLA batteries half the time so the batteries eventually wear out anyway and it's not like there's any complex battery maintenance going on.
you'd think some chinese manufacturer could save a lot of money on shipping by having a small unit with two big cables for some standard deep cycle battery terminals
I've heard of these being good:

I think they make smaller ones too.
A few weeks ago, I DIYed a second UPS to run my modem, router, switch and PoE injector for a Mikrotik AP. It's a crappy, old, UPS with a Canadian Tire SLA battery that I paid for using points that I've accumulated by buying gas there for two years. I did a test when I first set it up and I get roughly 2 hours out of it. I haven't pushed it, though.

The problem I can see myself running into soon is that I'm moving to my dad's new place soon. I'm getting a free fixed wireless internet connection from work (75/75, could top out at 100/100), though the tower it's connected to won't have battery backup since I'm the only "customer" on it. So, while my equipment will have power in an outage, the tower won't likely have power.
Years ago when one of my friends got an excessively beefy UPS so we loaded it, a TV and an N64 in my car and dragged everything out into the woods to play Mario Kart in the middle of nowhere. :v:

I mean for most situations, that's the idea. Unless we're in hurricane season our power might go out for only a couple minutes at most. And that's been in the last few years. If we're in Hurricane season I'll likely be home if I think a storm is coming, or I'll just remote in and power it off.

Which reminds me, that was something I wanted to get awhile back but never actually got to it.
Some hard drives are durable as shit.
I have one from my mom's old XP unit that was ran 24/7 for nine years and still reads 100% health.

Well isn't it based on pure volume. Some make lots of posts or long posts and it dilutes the cursing.

I'm pretty sure a high-end i7 will perform near the same since most games don't advantage of more than 2-4 cores lmao.

I think the idea isn't so much raw performance as it is consistent performance. And high core counts can help with that it seems.
But also yea marketing.

Unlikely, but perhaps someone doing some private VR dev work and they have their head out of their ass and are using every possible thread to do it.
I can't say where or when but I've seen software I fucking fell in love with instantly but knew it would never see the light of day because of an NDA and higher-ups who didn't know what they had.
