Sooooo
I signed up for a cisco webinar on cloud managed wifi in a bid to get a free router.
Anybody done this before? I passed myself off as an IT person at my company. I have no idea what to expect although I really hope I just listen in for an hour or something. I guess I can ask questions and shit but damn I just want the router.
If it works though I'm doing the other webinar for the free firewall.

Is it for the Meraki stuff? There's a reason they do it like that, if so. Catch is, Meraki is the whole ~cloud managed~ stuff. This means that to actually get access to that management you need to pay for a support license. As in, the hardware is useless without it, and the AP they send you comes with that for only so long. So keep that in mind.

God this is annoying to keep seeing constantly, even after I exclude it, it still blocks.

Exactly this. You'll get it, but I believe it only comes with a 2 year license.

Wait, so I can't even locally manage it and just use it as a really powerful access point without the license?? Same with the firewall?

Ctrl-f "Q: What happens when my license runs out?"
It's a pretty big catch. This is only Meraki stuff though, keep that in mind. But... caveat emptor.

OH. OpenWRT supports the meraki APs!

Well then. Suddenly the whole prospect looks so much better. Nice.
Holy shit I did not realize. I shoulda held onto that AP I got for minimizing a webinar

Check out Aruba IAPs (the I is for Independant) if you want some cool wifi tech.
What pisses me off is Dell gives inconsistent SSDs in ther XPS. I got a Toshiba one for the same price, and it's about 1/3 slower than the Samsung PM961
HP did the same thing with their laptops, even the mobile workstation ones. That was annoying because the other one was significantly slower and overall shittier.
Oh and do uncompressed benchmarks for SSDs. A lot of NVMe SSDs have similar uncompressed write speeds as other 2.5 inch SSDs. You are really paying for the size, not using a physical SATA3 port on your motherboard if you care about that, and the hilariously faster read speeds. At least, that's what I've concluded with my 960 Pro.

I've had consistently fantastic write performance on my 2 960 Evo's, just with the obvious catch of the 42GB cache's on them, but even if I hit past them I get fantastic performance, far more than a SATA3 port can deliver.
I was more implying that if you have the option to HDMI with a DVD to LCD and choose composite, you are stupid. You said in one of your videos you make fun of people using VGA connections when they have other options.
The GPU on my family's desktop has a DVI output. The monitor they use has a DVI input. I have plenty of DVI cables but everyone is too lazy to fix that. Mainly because I don't use that computer whatsoever and VGA seems to work fine. I mean I could easily fix it but I'm lazy and it's not a priority.
Now for displays, after being spoiled with really good displays elsewhere, getting a good one is worth it if you look at it all day. However, TN panels are ok for most people who just want a cheap computer monitor. IPS is a lot better. I recently gave ultrawide displays a shot and it's neat for video editing and doing stuff in general. It's just that with my current setup, I have my 2 1080p monitors above the ultrawide and it's not very ergonomic to always tilt your head up to see the upper monitors, and then down to see the ultrawide. Since they are shitty TN panels, rotating the displays to have them surround the ultrawide isn't a great option.

What do they have going for them? A cursory look has them at Ruckus tier pricing

I got a stack of IAP-93s from Tim Hortons for $30 on ebay :v:
The IAPs are capable of autoprovisioning off other IAPs on the network; if you configure one you configure them all. They also have built-in support for IDS and IPS which I haven't played with yet but am excited to try.
The normal Aruba APs require a dedicated controller like Ubiquiti Unifi APs but the IAPs are independent.

Ah nice. And yeah, Ruckus Unleashed are the same idea as IAP's. Also Unifi's can be just set and forget once with a phone app, or you can just install the controller and then turn it off after provisioning.
So... there is a new outlook.com interface apparently on beta
And it sucks

But my Unifi controller has pretty graphs!

We get these at work all the time :v:
For some reason half the time they're just completely dead.

Speaking of outlook, I like how it tells you that you're using an adblocker and if you want this right pane, you gotta get the premium subscription or something like that. I'm sure there is a script to remove that entire pane.

Please note that this might get you fired if you don't actually work in IT and supply your VAT ID to a vendor who then officially 'charges' the tax to your company. Accounting will notice this and probably ask about it since usually there's money involved when they get pinged and it's odd for them to get free stuff without knowing.
So if your employer learns that you represent yourself as an IT rep at your company towards large businesses you might have another thing coming :disappoint:
Got my dBrand skin today and put it on. Ended up just getting black leather top and bottom skins, white leather logo, and a matte black trackpad cover.
While it looks really nice and makes me feel safer about handling it (doesn't show prints and better grip), I would not volunteer to do it again. Was a massive pain to line things up, especially since the cut was I think too big. They tell you to not have it overhang, keep a gap on all sides, but mine has literally a hairline gap and getting it square and even was a nightmare.
Took me like an hour to do. But glad I did it.
Fuck the police

I think it'd be better and more accurate if it said "Not ready? Fuck you, we're gonna restart anyway"

US businesses don't have to present a VAT ID fortunately...
Sounds like the voice of experience for you though...
Yeah in the US you just have to provide a business email and some contact info that isn't really checked then you'll probably get a call at some point asking how you like it and if you want to order more

Snooze
I learned something new today: You can apparently destroy the BCD on a Windows Server 2016 SATA drive by installing an unsigned driver for an external USB storage device.
Admittedly, what I did was probably stupid. I tried to force Windows to recognize the USB drive as an local disk. I had expected maybe a BSOD or something, but not a complete fuckover of the BCD.
Herp derp.
Snooze
Snooze just means "wait until I'm not looking but have important tasks running in the background" to Windows.
