You don't really need AC. an N router that can also do 5ghz would be more than enough. Can't really help with a homegroup NAS off the top of my head, my only experience with that is via Active Directory :v:
edit to clarify: 5GHz will get you the best speeds, but once there's more than a wall or 2 between you and the signal 2.4 is ideal
IMO AC is still worth it with the inclusion of MU-MIMO regardless of the speeds you have

I sold a very similar laptop for $400 on eBay, so probably $500 max.

Sure, download the first 12 gigs at 14MB/s, then wait until you have 4 gigs to download at 24 KB/s...

oh fuck
You're going to hate this, but I feel the same way. I feel I gain more in the services, than google gets from me.
I can completely understand accepting it as a necessary part of those services, but the "who cares" attitude is a bit dangerous.
In my mind it's more, all of those companies are going to collect that data and compile a profile about me anyway so I might as well be able to benefit off of it too
Unless you're using a 1024x768 Tor browser window inside of a VM you're going to be pretty much 100% trackable across the internet

Will this work?
Yes, and won't melt your balls off like an M290x
I am from the "i only enable camera and microphone permissions on Messenger when a friend or my sister calls me once a week" club because privacy.
Also it's not that I don't care, I do, but I weigh the benefits and downsides. For me, I'm fine with it. But try not to tell people what to care about if I can help it. Unless it's general security, in which case, u betr fukni care
it's a semantic difference, but neither facebook or google sell your information to the highest bidder
it's not like they go "here's lordcrypto's data have at it advertisers", advertisers just go "can we advertise to this demographic?" and if lordcrypto happens to fit in that demographic, i see the ad (or i would if it weren't for adblock)

This is what most people don't understand, all that information are these company's most heavily guarded secrets
They're not going to just sell it off :v:

I think the big problem is that a lot of people aren't sure what's going on with this data. Google at least has some sense of transparency about it, they're pretty good about showing you what they track and how it's used. Facebook, Microsoft...Not much.

the facebook interest thing is better than it used to be, but it's still not great as far as data awareness goes
Ignoring the funny joke, I was actually considering trying one of these out.
Even with a slow internal connection I would say they'd run pretty well, even seen stuff to backup those claims.
Apparently they're really good for Thinkpads since the only bad thing about them is the lacking graphics chip, you can get a nice little docking setup for X220s and the like that'll give you enough horsepower to play modern competitive games even on the internal screen.
I was looking into it last week because my boyf's 965M is falling behind, sadly his notebook doesn't have Thunderbolt 3. That's going mainstream though, and lots of all-in-one options are cropping up for them. Sleek little things.
You can buy a nice T430 for like $150 nowadays is why.
are there any sites/trustworthy people selling them and shipping international or is lookin thru ebay for the ones without dents and that aren't missing everything that can be resold still the best bet?
I've bought an X220 and a T430 off of eBay and they were fine.
Word to the wise though, expresscard really doesn't have the bandwidth to support modern graphics cards well. You're better off saving up and getting a desktop.

Their mechanical design looks a+ compared to anything else I see
well, aside from the fact that I'll have to live with them being bigboyes

Hey man non-gendered, high-amperage, DC power distribution is where its at here in the socially progressive world of ham radio.
Right?
I like how it's CS:GO, a game you can easily play on even a laptop with an integrated GPU :v:

Expresscard tends to not have enough power to power shit like hard drives which is why I rarely use my x201t for any spinning hard drives. There's just not enough power for it and using that little USB power cable that connects to the Expresscard to USB doesn't work that well and it's janky half the time.
Sooo next old laptop, if I was to get it, would have to have USB 3 ports. Otherwise, it's basically useless. Expresscard in 2017 and not having USB 3 ports is just a waste of effort.
My X220 with ExpressCard can do a flash drive and a western digital USB 3.0 external drive at the same time just fine, but maybe mine is more power efficient than yours.
T430 has native USB 3.0, though. As does the X230; I use an X220 for the Hackintosh compatibility.

IIRC you had to get the i7 version in order to get 1 USB 3 port on the X220.
