WOAH guys calm down. Raid isn't a backup tho
The different types of RAID also serve very different purposes, y'know.
Yeah but I don't know what I'm doing.
I think we have a title for the next thread now.
My experiences with RAID were terrible and these weren't setup by me. Someone updated a bios and they had to get raid emulation software to get data back on RAID 5. I don't trust striping and parity and I just don't trust a group of drives depending on each other, the parity drive goes and you're fucked. Yeah, just no. Data centres have massive backups, so they're fine, I'm never gonna use it though, but then I don't manage servers for companies like some of you guys. But come on guys, it's just my opinion.
BUT YOU'RE NOT FUCKED IF THE PARITY DRIVE GOES all you have to is rebuild the array with a new disk
You do know not all types of RAID are bad, right? [editline]14th September 2017[/editline] Shit gets phased out. RAID5 will just follow in the steps of RAID2 and the like. 0, 1, 6 and combinations of them are all acceptable.
imo, RAID5 is never going be phased out. While it's terrible for large number of disks, it's still the most space efficient solutions for small arrays with 3-5 drives [editline]14th September 2017[/editline] The story of RAID 2-4 are quite different, since they're not physically feasible with modern hard drives. All three schemes requires all drives to be in spinlock, ie all hard drives' head must be reading the exact same physical sector at the same time. [editline]14th September 2017[/editline]
Don't forget that the real issue here is that B1NARY's internet is faster than most people here and anyone in Australia will ever get.
My uploading bandwidth is only limited to 1MB/s connection, just saying. I don't have 1Gbps internet, I said the disk access speed can easily reach over 1GB/s when striped across 12 drives. The content of my NAS rarely changes, and only have data added to it periodically. Thus, I can get away with waiting patiently for backups to upload in the course of a few week since it's very unlikely for this array to fail in the near future.
I'm just salty because his internet is better than my entire country when everything is going online. You're basically using a tin can and a piece of string. To be honest I feel bad for you and all those other people in Australia who have worse internet than me, people with the NBN are complaining, weren't we supposed to get fibre to the house? Is anyone in Australia ever going to get gigabit?
I had gigabit for three years
So how are you going to upload tens of terabytes of data at that speed?
you wait?
So how are you going to upload tens of terabytes of data at that speed?
By letting it run in the background 24/7 and forget all about it. At the rate of 1MB/s, uploading 1TB of data takes about 12 days. This isn't particularly fast, but it's not unreasonable.
I had gigabit for three years
How the fuck?
you wait?
:disgust:
So what's you're actual upload speed, I assume you're going to cap it at 1 megabyte per second because it'll effect your requests.
Exactly, this is a home network shared with my parents. I can't hog it all to myself. Actual is only about 1.75MB/s, so the remainder is plenty for them.
Australia has more internet infrastructure than just the consumer lines. AARNET is a country wide project for high speed internet between institutions and shit, even extends the network to outside Australia It's like getting a local connection speed to over 600km away. Very good shit.

Once upon a time, my SSD killed itself & my files. I don't know much about hardware, but I'm tempted to take it to an expert someday to be sure. I get that it's unlikely, but there was some good shit on there.
It's one reason I got my server, I can shut down my main machine, go on vacation and it's still trickle uploading to other services.
Fixed:
I guess the question is, is that RAID 5 or RAID 6?

Hackerman Shit RocketJump uploaded a new phone application today for ios and android It's just a customisable view that helps for tracking and chromakey for phones. Dug into the apk like anyone would. It's just a webview compiled from node, so of course, the juicy source is relatively uncompiled, however minified. Reading the source indicated this; spam tapping the rocketjump logo 30 times would unlock the $2 paid features for free "(But don't tell anyone!)" Well then...

Ok, I'd like to apologise for the harsh or rough nature of my posts, before I just thought you guys just rough natured.

[editline]15th September 2017[/editline]
Best Buy in the USA has an exclusive product called the "WD Easystore 8TB", where they stick these drives into an external enclosure and puts them on sale for anywhere between $160-180 every other week. I basically bought a dozen of them for $170, and just shucked the drives out of the enclosures. No one on earth knows how Best Buy is able to do this, considering WD RED 8TB costs like $280 on Newegg and just about everywhere else. The Easystores are literally using the same drive but costs more than $100 less, and even with an external enclosure.
Interesting. I just looked at Best Buy Canada and it looks like they don't have it at all. Also it looks like WD literally renamed their older gen portable and external hard drives (My Passport, My Book) with EasyStore and the My Passport and My Book series just have updated hard drives that have faster read/write speeds.

I know a lot of other Canadian hoarders frequently visiting the States just to buy them. If you're interested, this is essentially your only solution
Correct
That's kind of amazing.
