Also, is X299 good for anything? Gamers and casual users will get Z270, workstation users will get AMD or Xeon, who does that leave?
Gamers who want more cores, but need/want that Intel IPC.
A market segment that coffee lake is going to cannibalize in a few months anyway.

It's like they're advocating for piracy :v:

So I finally broke down and bought a thinkpad because I wanted a nice laptop for school that also isn't comically massive. Found an x220 for like $60, did I make a good choice?

depends on specs and condition
depends on specs and condition
And if you have any other laptops
If you have any modern laptop, then an x220 is just plain outdated nowadays unless you pour your heart and soul into modding it. Upgrading an x220 to be fast is almost as costly as just getting a better, newer PC in the first place.
But if you don't, it's still perfectly usable, just not too modern
I've got a Y50 that's my workhorse when I'm on vacation/doing anything serious away from my desktop but it's a bit massive to be lugging around to class. I just wanted to pick up a cheap and solid laptop for note taking and general on-campus tasks. Probably going to throw mint or something on it and see how it feels.
It's the i5-2520 /4GB ram model. Seems like it should be able to do what I'm asking of it with no issues.
Also just wanted to get a thinkpad because I really liked my work x240 this summer at my internship.
If you don't care about Hackintosh the X230 is most likely a better choice. CPU is a generation newer and they're generally the same cost.
X220 ain't bad though, I'm rocking macOS on mine and it gets the job done.

What? I got an X220 with an i5, 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD for $130. Spent $20 on another 4GB stick of RAM.
If you'd like to show me a newer, better PC for $150 I'm all ears.

Yeah just throw an SSD in there and it should be good to go 👌
Don't bother. Only three, I believe, UHD-BD drives for PC even exist at this point, and are a little pricey (Range anywhere from $150USD to $400USD), all made by Pioneer.
Next, in terms of software I believe the only piece of software capable of UHD-BD playback is Cyberlink PowerDVD, so your options are extremely limited.
Then you have the real kicker, minimum hardware requirements. As in, the only thing the ecosystem will let you do any of this on is Kaby Lake minimum (Not even Ryzen, due to lack of SGX), on top of this, making sure you have proper HDMI 2.0a output with HDCP 2.2 (No displayport, HDMI only).
Frankly, you're probably better off just getting a damned Xbox One S and sitting it next to your PC and just switching to a HDMI input on your display. It is such a shitshow.
Jesus, an entire console is cheaper than prepping a PC even before the Kabylake/HDMI fiasco.
Well. This is fun.
A phone number I use for business stuff has started to be spoofed by some robocall/spam service. I'm getting lots and lots of angry voicemails telling me to take them off a supposed call list. Having checked extensively through my providers call logs, those calls are not coming from me, it has to be spoofed.
Some people really are assholes.

These and similar ones are decent enough. I use em for my living room media computer, gets the job done without much fuss and it's in your price range.

Used PC prices are way too variable to argue about, but you have to consider aging screens, aging systemboards, aging batteries and aging ports.
An X230 decked out the same as an X220 can be found for around the same price and it has USB3 and newer graphics. As such there's no point in getting a model one year older, so it's getting pretty obsolete and I couldn't recommend one.
Also, it's sacrilege, but I don't really like X220s. The screen is a bit small for serious work (and U G G unless you get some specific combinations or mod one in) but the weight difference is negligible compared to a 14" laptop, and as a result it's kind of an awkward tablet too in the t trim.
The touchpad is also small and uncomfortable and most of the ones you find are old enough that they have that greasy worn-down keyboard and palmrest feel. Also, no USB 3.0.
Modern 13" laptops make sense because they weigh nothing and fit in a DSLR bag, but the difference between a x220t and most 14" laptops is so minor that you may as well upsize.
Why does this guy want more than the original price for an x79 board?

It's 2 generations out of date. Talk about unrealistic, I can get a Rampage V for less money.
Jesus, an entire console is cheaper than prepping a PC even before the Kabylake/HDMI fiasco.
Yeah, the people in charge just don't understand the market. Also I don't know if this true, but I've heard BD-XL disc is what they've using for UHD, but they put some sort of hardware DRM on the disc so only UHD branded drives can read them.
This is a format that is competing with 4k streaming and they're making it harder for people to use it, not exactly the best way to do business.
pc isn't the primary uhd disk market though, it's Xbox one and PS4
pc isn't the primary uhd disk market though, it's Xbox one and PS4
It is? That's sucks considering you can't tell the difference from that far away.

The discs themselves, the 50GB is a standard dual-layer bluray, the 66GB is a dual layer BD-XL, 100GB is a 3-layer BD-XL. The discs themselves aren't special, the lack of use on older drives is purely for sake of compatibility, a UHD-BD's content isn't going to play in any existing bluray player (Encryption, encoding, disc format), on top of the fact there's never going to be a writable form of UHD-BD's (why would you? the advantage comes from BD-XL, so) that it's just a hard fork. I don't think it's too unreasonable, it does disadvantage people with existing BD-XL PC drives but honestly that market segment is so tiny that it doesn't hugely matter.
I kinda forgot the console was still big with al the confusion in the market, like PC game streaming and the push to move away from console exclusives.

I'm just thinking though, they're competing with 4K streaming, so their market is limited to people who have bad internet and crazy people like me who want a physical media.

My Y500 is still going strong after all these years, mainly because of the ultrabay expansion thing. Allows me to add another 650M for SLi which is neat. Shame that's not a common feature.

To add: don't bother with laptops without USB 3 ports. It really depends on the person but I would personally want at least 3.
Only reason why I still have my x201t is because I got it for free almost a year ago, spent some money to get it up and running and it works good enough when I need to use it. It's not super fast or anything and I think I did everything I can to speed it up hardware-wise, besides getting a new battery. I mainly use my desktop now and I rarely have a reason to bring my laptop around anymore. The docking station makes it super easy to charge the laptop as I literally drop it onto the dock.
However I would pick a newer, cheaper laptop over an older one. Just put a bit more into the budget and you'd get something pretty decent. IIRC any laptop made in the past 4-5 years should have what I would need unless I wanted power compacted in an ultrabook.

Upgradability is still pretty bad. Mine can go from 16 -> 64GB RAM, and 1 -> 4 SSDs.
What do you have?
