• One of my friends wants a Mac... Should I convince him otherwise?

Even though Macs are rather spendy for medicre hardware specs, they are rather easy to triple boot Windows and Linux with, and alot easier to setup than a Hackintosh. And one thing Apple has going for them (And worth the pricetag of aesthetics) is build-quality. Not to mention their LCDs look brilliant.
Plus the form-factor, and the fact they're sexy as hell. [editline]5th April 2011[/editline] That's what you're paying for, design, materials, general sleek-sexiness.
Not to mention wireless everything, and space-saving too.
I forgot wireless stuff was exclusive to Macs.
Not to mention wireless everything, and space-saving too.
You mean this? http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.169419000/parentCategoryID.35208800/categoryId.35210700 I want it so much but I don't have bluetooth on my laptop and I don't think there is a Linux driver for the cheap dongles.
OSX being based on unix IS more secure than windows.
I forgot wireless stuff was exclusive to Macs.
Bluetooth?
For that reason you should just clean up his laptop and see if hes happy And tell him to just not download any antivirus crap and just install MSE
Tell him to try avast!
seeing as it doesn't matter what the price is, would facepunch prefer an alienware or a mac?
OSX being based on unix IS more secure than windows.
I never said that it wasn't, I just said that it wasn't worth putting the effort into breaking into because they're a minority.
Convince him to get one if anything, as the battery life is superb, the aluminium is so sexy, and it'll outperform, in most cases, windows laptops in the same price range.
I can understand that you say the first two things, but the third thing is only in your perfect dream world. That's not happening. Unless you're counting in battery life in performance, then ok, that's reasonable.
If your friend is only using a Mac for simple tasks, such as using Internet and some softwares, I don't see the problem.
No one who uses a mac for extended periods of time HATES it. They just may prefer windows better
Say you get a mac desktop and the warrenty runs out then a part breaks You're stuffed If it was a normal desktop then no problem just hop on to ebuyer, order it and install it yourself. [editline]5th April 2011[/editline] But I would try suggesting a hackintosh

If you're basing your buying around product failure, you have some silly criteria.

If someone isn't smart enough to keep viruses off their PC, to be honest a mac may be a better choice for them. Especially if they aren't a gamer and are able to afford it.
One of my colleagues just told me, she needs a new laptop. She came up with a macbook air and I told her to stay with a pc concerning compatibility of software she already knows and uses. But since she really has little less ideas about PCs I quickly came to the decision a mac is good for her. And: She is so happy with it now (it's incredibly small and light). I only helped her a little concerning the hardware setup so she wasn't getting totally ripped off for e.g. 4 GB instead of 2 of RAM but paying $600 more (and similar).

he isn't buying into a cult, he's buying a fucking laptop stop being an immature twat. you don't control anyone.
It utterly depends on what he is doing. I love MacBooks for browsing the web and other low graphics uses. But for something like gaming, personally I would go with a Windows desktop. But they are generally advertised to "hipsters" (for lack of a better word) So make sure he is buying it based on usage and not a status symbol.
how? it is a beautiful OS, but what functionality did they take from you?
Its a horribly ineficient OS. Why take up 1/7th of the screen up with a dockbar, instead of a 30px high taskbar? I do not like seeing my desktop stick out the sides of the dock, its fugly.
Getting a virus or not is mostly based on the activity of Common Sense 2011
I meant to renew my license for that.
Its a horribly ineficient OS. Why take up 1/7th of the screen up with a dockbar, instead of a 30px high taskbar? I do not like seeing my desktop stick out the sides of the dock, its fugly.
It's horribly efficient because of the dock? Every mac has a large enough screen to compliment the dock along with a large enough resolution. And considering with all of the Windows computers with dock applications out there, I think a lot of people disagree. The dock is one of the better things about OS X. And hey, if you want because it takes up *SO* much screen space, you can have it only show up on hover. Hell, you can even make it smaller. Efficient enough for you?
OSX being based on unix IS more secure than windows.
Considering that OS X isn't a large target so Apple can't be arsed to fix shit, considering that Windows is 95% of the desktop market and under constant attack (and thus improvement) and considering OS X is always the first to fall in those hack the machine, win the machine competitions, I'd say no.
I don't have many opinions computer wise, (although I'm probably going to get a macbook soon because my college offers good deals on it, but that's irrelevant) but I do think it's funny you hate first and ask for reasons to hate second. Because all you hear is elitist shit on forums like this, you automatically form an opinion on a product and its users without actual criteria. It's silly, to be honest.
Let him get a Mac then install Arch Linux on it. :v: Tell him to get a virus on THAT.
