Studying in the library today I overheard some girl talking about how barcodes contain data, how they use special ink that's magnetic to put the data on there etc
How the fuck do people come to these conclusions

Lots of people doesn't know how remote database works, or what it is.

That's not the point. Magnetic ink? Please.
Not so much computer illiteracy as it is frustration with my mom and computers.
So our family computer is a Pentium 4 from 2003. Probably pretty high end for back then, but a real piece now. She used to complain about how slow and crappy it and how she liked my laptop so we bought her a laptop for Christmas, which has an i3 and Blu-ray. Much more superior than the Pentium 4 machine right there.
The thing is, everyday, my mom is still using that old Pentium 4 and getting frustrated because its too slow to play her Facebook games.
So I go up to her and ask:
Me: Why are you still using this computer? Wouldn't you rather use your laptop that can actually RUN that game that your playing?
Mom: Yeah, but that would mean that I have to turn on the laptop and I don't really want to wait around for that.
Me: But you've been on this computer for at least an hour. If you waited a minute or so to turn it on your laptop, you could be using that one instead and not have to worry about the game crashing [and it does crash, A LOT].
Mom: Yeah, but this one was already on.
Granted, that excuse would make sense if she just wanted to quickly check her email or look something up.
But there is no reason to be getting frustrated at a stupid Facebook flash game that is running crappy and causing Firefox to crash for an hour, when a perfectly good computer is RIGHT THERE.
Solution: Use hibernation instead of shutdown, it starts up a lot faster.

At least in our class we were told about MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) and about bar codes in the same lesson. Maybe they just got confused and they just thought that they were the same thing.
My sister recently got a laptop and is using some website to talk to her other friends via webcam. Only thing is it butt fucks my speeds, i've asked if she could use a different program (reccomended skype ect.) but she (and my dad) both go "HURRR DURRR ITS BECAUSE YOU PLAY GAMES ONLINE AND USE SKYPE/STEAM HURRRRRRR"
Pretty damn annoying considering i get 500+ ping even with console command to help (cl_cmdrate 1).
That's not the point. Magnetic ink? Please.
There is such thing as magnetic ink, but it's not the identical type as the magnetic strips seen on disposable paper cards and such.
MICR is used on stuff like cheques
linux can run on 128mb of ram
try running 7 on that
[editline]25th January 2011[/editline]
actually it can run on less
I actually tested how much ram that Vista needs to boot.
iirc the answer was 255MB, after that it refused to boot.
MICR is used on stuff like cheques
I always thought checks were optically read since the characters are in OCRA.
If you pay in a check, you notice the check is ran through a machine very quickly, too quickly for OCR by my judgement, but I only covered a small section in Standard Grade Computing.

Good solution, but I need to get my MOM to do that. Its not my computer. She just leaves the Pentium 4 on 24/7 with Firefox open. She has a bad habit of not turning off stuff when she's done using it. Hell, she leaves our Wii on after she is done watching Netflix.
so im installing a fresh copy of windows 7 for the first time (i upgraded from vista on for my last windows install)
and i find out that i only have an upgrade cd key.
well so i installed a fresh win 7 install and then while it was in it's 30 day unregistered period i installed windows 7 on top of windows 7.
and then the upgrade cd key worked flawlessly, thats some shit security on MS' part
There's an Xzibit joke in there somewhere.
Solution: Use hibernation instead of shutdown, it starts up a lot faster.
I always do that, but sometimes my computer wakes up randomly. Probably because my mouse moved one fourth of a millimeter.

There's an Xzibit joke in here too.
I use butter as a CPU coolant, because y'know, that's what you're supposed to do.

I'd rather an x86bit joke.
What does it mean when I get multiple BSODs with different errors pretty much all the time, I get the feeling something is failing.

probably temps or drivers
probably temps or drivers
Definitely not temps, I've tested that. I've found that it never happens in games, just when it's idle and I'm browsing the web. I got the feeling that it was the RAM at one point but I'm not sure why.
Run Memtest or something and check that.

Are you using Chrome?
More content from my "flowcharts and pseudocode" class.
The class actually has two teachers. One of them's pretty good, but the other REALLY needs to stick to being a counselor, not a teacher. Some of his "wisdom":
The 8.3 file limit still exists; while Windows will let you do more, it can't tell the difference between index.htm and index.html.
The 8 in the 8.3 file limit is a recommendation to use no more than 8 characters in the filename, as that's the most people can easily remember (same reason passwords longer than 8 characters aren't recommended)
In an actual job, you WILL have a flowchart of EVERY SINGLE subroutine in the program. As in, every line in each subroutine will have a flowchart symbol.
While I can't say that third one is true from personal experience (having never worked at a major software shop), I call BS on it since it's so obviously retarded.

you can get them fired... or try and call bull shit - PROVE them wrong...
Are you using Chrome?
I have it installed.
I tried Driver Verifier and my pc got stuck in a loop of restarting. Decided to revert to last known good configuration.
Dell DVI Splitter:

Our new school computers have one DVI output, our 24" Dell monitors, have one DVI input. Out school has these DVI splitters connected to the out, and then a DVI cable connecting one of the splits to the monitor. The other "split" just sits there. Why the fuck...I don't...

I did. I literally DID call out "Bullshit!". However, since the class is currently quite overcrowded, and I was at the back, nobody heard me.
And I actually don't dislike the guy. He's a cool dude, especially since he scheduled me for an actual programming class next term, but he has no place teaching.
In my college of about two and a half thousand students, only two of them (including me) turned up to a 3D modeling 'enrichment' (basically voluntary lessons outside of normal school time (2:30 every Tuesday)) class. Oh well, all the more help I can get.

Aren't these really expensive? We have them on every classroom computer since they need to be connected to the screen and the projector.
