Am I missing something here, because I don't know which company you're referring to (besides possibly Microsoft).

That was great.
microsoft doesnt make computers. cant be microsoft.
I decided that the rest of the house doesn't need the quite expensive DLink router that they have (It's for routing internet to two computers)
I was amused that the router had built-in syslog support, and I routed that to my laptop for informational purposes
DICKS.
That kid who cut the battery apart just got a new one. He tried to fit it in his briefcase, saw that it wouldn't fit, and went for the scissors on the desk. I stopped him and the exchange went something like this:
Me: YOU CAN'T CUT UP THE BATTERY
Him: Why not? It's not like that stuff inside is dangerous. That's what THEY want you to think. (stares awkwardly)
He stood there for a minute. My hand was on my knife the whole time. He would have stood there longer but I called Campus Safety on him and he left.

Guy I know sitting near me was talking about how GPS' work. He basically said that they work because they, to quote him exactly, "Are able to connect to special 3-g wifi networks. Without them there would be no way to use a GPS, because that's how they know where you are."

Haha, you think your measly door will stop battery boy? He will eat straight through that minor inconvenience!

Well, they made the XBox. That was just a stripped down PC. Even ran Windows 2000.

The whole industry acts like this.
They sell you a pre-built pc built for "surfing the net" which costs over five hundred dollars.
I've made a list for one that could easily surf the web, play some games on medium-low and play movies for under one hundred bucks.
And they sell cpus with like +400Mhz for ~200 bucks more, see the pre-SB i7s.

I'm pretty sure the whole Windows 2000 on the original xbox is a rumor....

Or myth, if you will

Yeah, companies try and take what the average person wants, make that the bare minimum, and then have $50 steps up to the $700 computer that would do the same thing in the end
"Android is faster than the iPhone because it uses NAND technology!"

It did have some bits of Windows in there, like DirectX. I saw a project a while ago that basically made a wrapper for Xbox games to run them on the PC. I assume they did this to make it easier for software developers to port their Windows games over to the Xbox without hiring a completely new set of programmers to write software for a completely new platform.
Isn't XNA PC/360 compatible? Do they use that?

It used a modified 2000 kernel but that was about it.

The prototype ran 2000 then they just used parts of the Kernel the complicated anti piracy chips and mass production it lost the ability to run the full version.
You can however make it into a Linux box complete with usb keyboard mouse.

Oh, I see.
More content: I had to call the HP people to find out what was in the battery.
Me: What are the contents of the travel battery (model number/serial here)?
HP: Well it's essentially toxic so you should take necessary precautions to clean it up. Did one of these batteries crack?
Me: Not by accident.
HP: ?
Me: Someone decided that it would be a good idea to cut a battery to make it fit in his briefcase.
HP: (silence)
Me: With scissors.
HP: (more silence)
Me: Hello?
HP: (beep) Could you say that again?
Me: (repeats)
HP: (laughing) Please tell me you're joking?
Me: Nope.
HP: (more laughing) Ookay then, we'll send you the cleanup procedure for the battery stuff.
Me: Ridiculous, isn't it?
HP: (in background) He cut a battery in half with SCISSORS! How the hell do you even do that?
