In the beginning, Intel made a chip, called (quite creatively) the 8086. It was used in the first IBM PC, the system that every single PC is, by definition, compatible with.
That's not the beginning. The beginning is the i4004
AMD pretty much made x86-64, before that we had the mess that was Itanium
That's not the beginning. The beginning is the i4004
The beginning of the PC compatible was, in fact, the 8086. The i4004 is not compatible with, well, anything. [editline]3rd January 2011[/editline]
AMD pretty much made x86-64, before that we had the mess that was Itanium
I was simplifying things. And Itanium a) is still around, and b) is not x86 compatible, one of the reasons it was a mess.
it's not compatible with a radically different instruction set what a mess [editline]3rd January 2011[/editline] seriously that's like saying linux is a mess because it's not windows
it's not compatible with a radically different instruction set what a mess [editline]3rd January 2011[/editline] seriously that's like saying linux is a mess because it's not windows
The thing is, people didn't want a new instruction set. They want their new hardware to "just work" with their old software; failing that, they at least needed software that would perform the same job. They didn't get that. Sure, Windows worked on it, and they eventually got SQL Server and Java running, but there was NEVER a significant amount of software available for it. Itanium fundamentally failed because of software, not hardware. Companies can switch to Linux, because there's a large amount of software available, enough to cover pretty much any need, and enough that you could choose between several options. Itanium didn't - if you switched, you had maybe one application that did what you needed. Yes, the hardware was problematic as well, mainly because compiler technology still hasn't caught up with Itanium's design, but that was not the biggest problem.
I tried to explain to my Grandma how to move files over to a DVD. She got everything up to hitting start. Nothing. So now she's crying an she left the house. I'm no good at explaining anything.

In reality, they just suck at explaining anything and people to have time to sit around listening to it.
Well she is illiterate but she doesn't think she knows stuff, I am still horrible at explaining things though.
Well she is illiterate but she doesn't think she knows stuff, I am still horrible at explaining things though.
I can relate to that.

All of my teachers use safari when firefox is installed. Also, my Language Arts teachers is bragging about how she made a wordpress page.
Couldnt you just do it for her?
She's only visiting, she lives in a different state.
For overclocking your CPU I'd say it is safe to up the voltage a very minor amount.
pretty sure intel says anything more than 1.5v will reduce the lifespan of the cpu/damage it
pretty sure intel says anything more than 1.5v will reduce the lifespan of the cpu/damage it
Even if you're overclocking imo you don't even need 1.5V to get a good boost
So I missed 437 posts. Did I miss anything significant?
So I missed 437 posts. Did I miss anything significant?
Mostly a discussion about different OS´s, Not that much content
So I missed 437 posts. Did I miss anything significant?
Arguing about which OS is best (we eventually decided OpenVMS is Master Race), arguing about whether Mandrith is making stuff up or not, and I explained why x86 is named x86.
Arguing about which OS is best (we eventually decided OpenVMS is Master Race)
I thought we agreed that anyone who brought up that argument again needed flamed off of Facepunch. oh well.
arguing about whether Mandrith is making stuff up or not
Long as it's plausible and follows the rules, I don't see the problem with that. I mean, it's not like this thread is flowing with content anyway.
and I explained why x86 is named x86.
I liked this.
So I missed 437 posts. Did I miss anything significant?
Just Mac vs. PC vs. Linux
Just Mac vs. PC vs. Linux
and debate over Mandrith faking his fathers fucktardedness or not
[img_thumb]http://images1.memegenerator.net/ImageMacro/4769924/Fix-mums-computer-once-Any-problems-are-now-my-fault.jpg?imageSize=Large&generatorName=Family-Tech-Support[/img_thumb]
That's what happened with my Aunt... I had to reconfigure her router to work with her iPod. OMG CHROME WON'T OPEN HE HACKED ME. Also, I have blank CDs and DVDs. Should I dual-boot? I fixed the problem with my BSOD's after a dual-boot.
I liked this.
You want me to do more stuff like this? I've been thinking about doing an in-depth explanation of how a processor works, about 10 paragraphs to do a few arithmetic instructions in assembly, explaining how slow RAM is and everything. Maybe give a proper explanation for hyper-threading, which I think isn't well-understood by some of the people here.
[img_thumb]http://images1.memegenerator.net/ImageMacro/4769924/Fix-mums-computer-once-Any-problems-are-now-my-fault.jpg?imageSize=Large&generatorName=Family-Tech-Support[/img_thumb]
I hate it when that happens. I also hate it when you accidentally break something of yours (i.e. overwriting your MBR on accident trying to install linux on your brand new netbook... grr, still pissed about that) and then no one in the house lets you try to fix things or let alone touch them because they fear you'll break it like the other thing you broke and or messed up.
Why do many Mac owners assume that just because something costs more it is better quality? Just talked to someone, who said that their 5770 is better than mine because "Macs have higher quality hardware". Anyway, I recently removed over 80 viruses from my dad's comp, but now things are "running slower" and he says that "I broke it".
[img_thumb]http://images1.memegenerator.net/ImageMacro/4769924/Fix-mums-computer-once-Any-problems-are-now-my-fault.jpg?imageSize=Large&generatorName=Family-Tech-Support[/img_thumb]
I posted because this actually happened to me, now my Mom won't let me touch her laptop.
See, my family understands my rules on providing tech support. Rule #1: Look at the XKCD comic I have pasted to the wall above the monitor. Use it. Rule #2: I don't fix printers. If it's not working, reboot and try again. Rule #3: If I tell you to use this instead, it's for a reason. This is how I converted my parents, aunt and grandmother to Chrome. The only complaint I got is from the aunt - her college's web software doesn't work in Chrome. I rarely have problems with providing tech support. It helps that my family isn't computer illiterate - even my grandmother knows computers pretty well, probably because she worked in accounting in the 80s and used some IBM databases. My dad's an engineer as well, so he's good with tech - although his idea of programming is based on programmable logic circuits, not computers. He even knows a bit of FORTRAN.
He even knows a bit of FORTRAN.
Press start to ri- Oh wait, wrong Fortran. Sorry.
despite popular belief fortran is pretty easy
I have a hilarious 4 year old cousin. He didn't understand how to start a program so I tried to show him, but after about 10 minutes, he proclaimed that it was because the computer is "broken." He said it was because my computer has too many ones and not enough zeroes.
