SSH is basically a remote terminal, if you know what I mean...
Does it allow me to control the Linux server from a Windows machine, much like TeamViewer and UltraVNC?
I have shit-loads of games and my family gets pissed when I download them, so I want to keep backups.
I also want to run a game server.
It's a fucking studio 540 what the hell else do I do with it?
Plus people will think I am the shit if I have a server with all my stuff on it.
Hehe, people are stupid.
lol because steam needs to run in order to back it up
I wish people in this thread were more intelligent.

lol it's terminal, how you should run a server.
lol it's terminal, how you should run a server.
Mind expanding on that?
Don't tell me I'll have to deal with not having a GUI.

1. Steam backup feature
2. backup games
3. move games to server.
4. ???
5. Derp.
and when I want to run the back ups I just move them back to my PC.
I don't need steam on it now my bad.
Mind expanding on that?

Yeah... It's a good skill to have, and the only acceptable way to run a server imo.

Well then I'll stay with Win7 and UltraVNC.
I have no idea how to operate whatever you're talking about, and I have no plans of using the rest of the year to learn it.

It takes 5 seconds to set up a server in terminal. I've never used linux in my life and I managed it.

This is SSH, It's just BASH (Linux Terminal) over a network or internet.

But how will I be able to download and install a minecraft server program?

This is a terrible chart I know, but it gets the point across - make up your own mind in a server environment where speed and resource management is key
(Remote access is void nowadays)

I'd like to see you efficiently use VNC on a phone, SSH is so much better.
Well, a Minecraft server doesn't require all that much.
I still believe Win7 would be a better solution. It's at least something I can use.
Also, I do plan using the server for rendering.

Sorry, Minecraft servers are pretty hard to run effectively. You want all the CPU you can get.
[editline]10th January 2011[/editline]
RAM, too.

I fear that I won't be able to set up a terminal server like this.
How do you even download and install something on it?
So I was just playing World Of Tanks and I said in a match, "I hope they port WoT to Mac OS." Then someone piped up and said "But macs are for fags and this game is about tanks." Tried to talk some sense into him and he said things along the lines of "noone runs macs on a pc" "osx is stoopid and slow, windows XP is the best operating system" "Ne1 who buys a mac is stoopid." Then he said "I run an amd wut? master race builds their own computers" to which I replied "No, master race runs as many operating systems as possible." He said "I dont have time for linux, ur dumb." Then here's the kicker, "hardware is all that matters, sir"

Debian: sudo apt-get install ssh
CentOS / Fedora: sudo yum install openssh
Merry christmas, you can now connect to it using PuTTY on your windows PC.

And a minecraft server tool?
Also, I've never had classes about programming/coding/command line stuff at school, so I probably won't get this working.

Yeah, because wanting WoT on an operating system other than Windows is computer illiteracy :downs:

Debian instructions, logged in as a user other than root:
Minecraft is java, so we need that first:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk
Then we'll make a new directory containing server files:
mkdir ~/minecraftserver
Then change to it:
cd ~/minecraftserver
Then we'll get the server application itself, using wget, a file downloader:
wget http://www.minecraft.net/download/minecraft_server.jar
Then all we have to do is run it:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
Congrats, there's a shiny new vanilla minecraft server!
If you really still don't understand anything, add me on Steam or something and I'll guide you through Debian's installation and all that stuff tomorrow.

I'll add you on Steam when I get the PSU.

Arch: sudo (Install the package when you install, if you choose arch) pacman -Sy openssh(Always try to run pacman -Sy on your first command pacman use of the day, it will update the repositories)
And as for setting up the minecraft server.
pacman -S jre
and I recommend using a shell script for startup as with command line interface you need do shit like +xm1024 blah blah shit.
[editline]10th January 2011[/editline]
I should make a guide for setting up a minecraft server on Arch, Seeing though there were none and I had to wing everything.
Fuck, I would be more inclined to use a Mac, but Apple's adverts are juvenile and inaccurate.
It's like they think that Windows Vista is the only other operating system ever, and all PCs have the
same hardware.
But how will I be able to download and install a minecraft server program?
Mac isn't something to bother with unless you're using it for work and not for gaming.
If you're using it for work, it's awesome. Gaming, not so much.

Running a production server on Arch was never intended, and while supported (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Comprehensive_Server_Guide), it's not exactly the greatest of ideas (rolling release)
Mac isn't something to bother with.
fix'd. Only reason I'd touch a mac is to learn how to use one so that I can profit off idiots who need their overpriced garbage fixed, and to fix idiots overpriced garbage.
[editline]10th January 2011[/editline]
Or if I was rich. I'd love a Macbook. (I'd only get one if I were rich because it's basically throwing money away, only good thing is the aluminum body).

It doesn't really matter if you're just running a home server for small things, now if you're running a huge enterprise, then you start worrying, Arch works great for me as a minecraft and file server, If I was going to run a website or some other service I'd start using Debian or a Debian based distro.
