in the original documentation for Fahrenheit, it went like this:
0 F = temperature of salt on ice
100 F = his wife's body temperature
but it was revised when people figured out that water boils at almost 180 F higher than it's freezing point on the Fahrenheit scale, hence the average temperature now being 98.6
But why not just use Kelvin?
That makes the most sense, logically.
It starts at absolute zero, and then scales up.

Celsius hits 0 when water freezes, and 100 when water boils.
It works because the zero-area in both Celsius and Fahrenheit is considered to be FUCKIN' COLD. And 100 in both is considered to be FUCKIN' HOT. Something about those numbers.
I kind of wish I was brought up on Celsius - every time someone mentions a Celsius temperature I have to pull out my iPod and convert it to Fahrenheit.

then why not use Rankine? it does the same.

Because it doesn't match human experience. Humans generally experience temperatures between 0C and 40C (30F to 100F, fellow Americans). Both of those are more or less logical number ranges for that - 100 degrees is "hot", and 0 degrees is "cold", under both systems. Kelvin isn't based on things humans experience - is 270K hot or cold? what about 370?

Quick, rough conversion - double it, and add 20. I've learned to do this rather easily - it isn't good enough for science, but it gets you something you can say "oh, that's hot/cold/warm/fucking freezing".
I suppose, I just think that starting at the beginning seems like a good idea.
I'd rarely use anything out of the 0-200 range on Celsius.
Have to say, Kelvin to Celsius conversion's nice though, just add 273 and a bit.

270 K is fairly cold, but nothing outside of human experience. you would die if it was 370 K outside.

More accurate: C*1.8+32=F

I know that - but I had to do the math. I assume you did the math as well - even if you think in Celsius, you still did the "subtract 273" step.

Yeah, but that's more difficult to do in your head. Even if you're good, it's still slow.
C * 2 + 20 = F works well enough for temperatures people work with, and is lightning-fast to calculate in your head.

It's gettin hot in here, so take off all your clothes!
No girls in here?
Nah, not gonna do it.
My Tempin1 is -63. It is still pretty cold man.

Oh god I just noticed ~30% of my posts are from this thread alone :byodood:
Now for some content, I was chatting on steam with my "300$ headphones shitty Pentium D rig" friend, I was telling him how he shouldn't have paid 200$ for another Pentium D while he had a LGA775 mobo. He then tells me how much of an upgrade 1 GB of RAM is and when I told him I thought his rig was still shit he raged and told me to "GTFO" before going offline.
Which reminds me of my Mac-humping cousin. On Christmas eve he was going around the house showing off his iPad to justify his purchase. Made me lol. He also told me he will never buy a product from anything but Apple and Sony...
I hope his computer is a Sony, then :v:
At least he doesn't buy stuff directly from Micro$oft. If you buy stuff directly from them, you have a 95% chance of it not working.

Wha?
Wha?
Don't buy anything directly from Microsoft. When I bought something directly from them it didn't work, then when my friend did neither did his.

Yes, but you were hinting that they sold computers. And I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X3 mouse. Fucking works great and has for the past two years. Before that I had a generic optical mouse from Microsoft. That lasted six years.
Oh man I feel retarded. You said directly from Microsoft. I didn't see that part :v:
Needs more bad reading :<

Yeah, buy them from resellers, there are some great ones, like MUFC200- wait a minute
