After my mother's computer sits unused for about half a day while she's at work, the screensaver takes 5 minutes to disappear, and after that the computer stays virtually unresponsive for about another 5 minutes.
If you click on the start menu when it's done shitting on itself, it takes it about a painful 20 seconds to load with an initial 7 second wait after clicking before it even tries to load.

You're a bad son. I replaced the ulgy, falling apart Dell Dimension 4600 tower (The front is held on by duct tape) that my mom was using with a slightly faster Compaq machine that her CRT sits on. Less space used and the silver looks much nicer than grey. I shoved a clean install of XP on there, installed all her games, Microsoft Security Essentials and Firefox with AdBlock+. Works fine for her.

She's probably got like 50 things set to do things while the computer's idle.
Nope, not really.
All it's used for is browsing. It's anti-virus is AVG (which I installed, it choked on anything else) and there's never any scheduled scans. Though I run that and MBAM every week or so for her just to make sure.
She's not an idiot about computers, thank God. So usually I don't have to fix anything.
Her computer is just... Old.
OS was never reinstalled. Ever. Though it did receive service pack updates.
Registry has been cleaned a few times.
Defragged twice. (Both recent)

In order of how much I use it:
- Custom built computer, originally had as much power as what I'd wager to be a mid-range 2005 box, but since then added a better video card and another GB of RAM.
- Dell Optiplex GX110 (Pentium III designed for Win98!), found on the curb for free outside my house one day.
- Compaq Presario C751NR, currently has a major heating issue, but I think it's just full of dust.
- ASUS EeePC, needs a new OS.
- Brother's Toshiba Satellite, I haven't used it since he got out of jail.
- Mother's Dell laptop, I never used it.
