The number following the Nexus brand is the screen size, not a version.
Has Google officially said? It could be either. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline]
Motorola following 'better is better' strategy post Google acquisition http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-following-better-better-strategy-post-google-acquisition
It'd be nice if every android phone came with a stock option. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline]
because his post is dumb
It was a legitimate question.
Has Google officially said? It could be either.
Whether or not they've explicitly stated it, it's pretty obvious that was the intention. Mixing it up now would just be contradictory and confusing. It's just too soon to speculate on naming. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline] A newer Nexus 7 has been pretty strongly suggested by multiple sources now, but similarly, they couldn't call it the Nexus 8 because it's not 8", plus using an incremental versioning scheme that started as a measurement of size would eventually mean the N7 becomes the N8, N9, and then runs up against the already existing N10. Plus using two numbers in the name ("nexus 7 2") would also probably be considered confusing by the marketing team.
Mixing it up now would just be contradictory and confusing.
You're saying that like Google never did anything confusing. If they went for a completely new naming strategy, I wouldn't be surprised at all. I like the current one though.

I like the current one though.
As a marketing team, your job is simply to advertise your product in a way that the consumer likes and understands. Mixing up established trends on the spot when there's no good reason to do so relative to an alternative (new/modified naming system) is a pretty bad choice no matter how you look at it. Unless they expect phones to continue to grow an inch annually, continuously, into the future. Which I guess isn't unreasonable considering current trends. (looking at you, galaxy note)

People want to pretend there's any consistency when there really isn't. The Nexus 7 is 7", the Nexus 10 is 10", that works. But the Nexus 4 is 4.7", you can't even justify it by using rounding because it's much closer to 5" than 4". How about the Nexus Q, I don't remember that being Q inches in diameter since Q isn't a letter. But they're sort of trying to have it relate in some way to the screen size. I'm wondering, if they want to keep all these names from now, if you could just have Nexus 7 and do a thing based on time period or an unlisted generation like the iPad is. It's the iPad from early 2012 and the iPad from late 2012, there's no number, but there's a generation if you need to look into that. It eliminates the need to change the name while still allowing people to differentiate between them. It'd be the second generation Nexus 7. Just my opinion though, but I'd rather than then Nexus 7.2 or 72 or god knows what.
Well judging by past Nexus devices, Google kept one letter/word from the manufacturer (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus). This changed with the Nexus 7, and following Nexus 4 and 10 kept the same scheme, so we can only hope they'll keep this and won't try to come up with something new which will just confuse everyone) edit: If Google kept the old system we would currently have an LG Optimus Nexus instead of the Nexus 4. The N7 and N10 are however original devices (correct me if I'm wrong) which have no "manufacture branded" counterpart. However, if we really had an LG Optimus Nexus, I can imagine a lot of people would sign it off right away, because of the failure that the Optimus 2x was.

The Nexus S isn't S inches across either, but that was before they started the new, simplified but generation-unfriendly scheme. Maybe it's just me, but I absolutely hate Apple's naming strategy. There are several iPads out, except the only uniquely named ones are iPad and iPad 2, except don't forget the 2012 iPad because it's actually newer and much better than the 2010 iPad, despite having the exact same name. iPads are individual products with individual launches, not commodities (although I'm sure Apple would love to differ.)
Maybe it's just me, but I absolutely hate Apple's naming strategy.
I really had no problem with it until Apple released two iPads in one year (as Kaabii mentioned). That's when the clusterfuck started IMO.
iPad & iPad mini?
Nah, they released the 3rd generation iPad in March, and the 4th generation along with the Mini in November 2012.
iPad & iPad mini?
No, a new full-size ipad was launched alongside the ipad mini, and the fact that you didn't know highlights my point. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline] ninjas

They don't fit the naming scheme properly. Also it was just a suggestion, since I don't really know how they'd handle it. Considering Apple is the company in mobile making all the money borrowing one of their strategies isn't the worst idea in the world. They've been naming their laptops that way forever and people don't seem to mind that it's based on the year of the refresh rather than some number. I mean, it's a yearly refresh. It's not really complicated either since it's very apparent that the 2012 one isn't the same, because like I said, it's listed as being the third generation one, and the newest one is the fourth generation one.
iPad & iPad mini?
Well I guess I'm wrong, maybe it is complicated. iPad third generation, launches with the best screen on any mobile device and an A5X chip. Replaced at an October event by a fourth generation with the same display but the lighting connector and an A6X processor which couples two 1.4GHz Swift cores with an SGX554MP4 to power the display. Oh and a 12W charger because of the big battery charge time. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline]
I'd be perfectly happy if they at least included the generation number as part of the name, or at least somewhere in the launch hype, like intel does with 2nd-gen Core for SB, 3rd-gen Core for IB, etc.
Oh well I wouldn't mind that. I'm just saying they can keep calling it the Nexus 7, no need for a screen size increase or to make it 7.1 or something like that.
I hate how I can't install anything if the internal storage ever goes below 50mb, like the apk it downloads goes into the cache which is part of the internal storage which messes updating even more.
depends on the device absolutely everything works on my N7, and it's probably not the same for a lot of devices
Xperia V Can anyone link me to a changelog or any page for it at all(Related to official CM builds)?

Aww yeah, my One gets here on thursday.
Is there another (and better) way to copy files to my Galaxy Nexus, I'm trying to move 10+ GB of music, but mtp and ptp don't make a difference. The transfer breaks after a few files.

Then the 4C, 4D, etc. We can just call the current Nexus 4 the 4A.

Wow. The HTC One is an incredible phone. This is definitely going to be my daily driver. It feels great to be back in Android-land. [editline]16th April 2013[/editline] Holy shit, this camera can capture more light than I can physically see. What is this witchcraft?!

As in if you use a DSLR at ISO6400 or whatever and take a photo with a long shutter speed (like a few seconds), it will see more than what your eyes will.

To put things in perspective, I would force the 8X to take half second exposure times and it still can't capture anything near the kind of light that this thing is taking in. The 8X would look like it's around night time, the One looks like it's afternoon/dusk. It also has less noise, so much less. It isn't even funny how much less grainy the photos are. I just fucking hate AT&T's fingers all over this stock ROM. I want to keep it locked until S-OFF comes out.
