That's quite possibly the worst way to fix that problem. and also the most hilarious one :v:
Also, Swype is on the Play Store now! Has a beautiful Holo theme, too!

So anandtech put up their S4 review part one. On the software side it looks antiquated as hell, especially when you see those notification toggles that you've been seeing since the S2. And it just looks so cheap compared to the iPhone or HTC One, I don't know why you would ever buy one.
Also the AdobeRGB mode was bullshit like I thought. It just doesn't work that way. For anyone who does buy the phone, set it to movie mode.
On the brightness front, the SGS4 includes dynamic contrast functions that cannot be disabled and change as a function of what is being displayed. There's an "auto adjust screen tone" checkbox under display but don't let that fool you, that doesn't disable dynamic contrast, just white point. Under screen mode are the mDNIe toggles we've seen on countless other previous Samsung Android phones with AMOLED panels, only here we notice something interesting. There have always been four toggles as long as this option has existed, only what's different is now, one of them is named "Professional photo." Reviews of other regional variants of the SGS4 have included the same button but marked "Adobe RGB." Oddly enough it seems that the North American versions at least have this renamed for some reason, but undoubtedly the function is the same. Many speculated that this is now a toggle for some full CMS (Color Management System) which "fixes" the inherent color space issues with AMOLED and oversaturation that occurs when looking at sRGB content on such devices. Unfortunately, I can confirm that my initial suspicions that this is just a continuation of the mDNIe (lite) settings from previous generation is in fact correct. I reverse engineered what I could of these settings from both kernel messages while changing the toggles, and looking at the kernel sources. Turns out that 'Professional photo' mode is actually the 'Natural' mode renamed from previous versions.
Alright, I have one complaint about CM10
The GPS sucks shit, I thought it was bad on the stock ROM, but now it took me 20 minutes with wifi enabled, and once I turned off wifi to start driving it lost the signal, and cannot locate a lock anymore.
grrr even my transformer can get a better lock on its almost-all-aluminum back
most likely a bad build if you're not on a stable one
if you're on a stable one it beats me :(
i could get a lock in 15 seconds or so with my gnex
Yeah I'm on a stable CM 10 I downloaded straight from ROM manager.
Literally everything else works perfectly, so I'm really not sure what to do. Guess I don't use GPS that much so its not that big of a deal.

Speaking of the software side, Samsung reintroduced those 4 tall tabs at the top. That's like.. from Android 2.0?

This would confuse the shit out of me if I owned a previous Android phone (hell, even the S3) and would take too long to get used to.
I'm pretty sure those were in use until GB, but that still goes back to what I said, nothing is changing from the S2 days in terms of design quality on Samsung phones. Nice catch though, I never even saw those.
AFAIK they're only used in Settings, although I haven't seen much of the 'new' TouchWiz UI.
The blotchy blacks(sometimes referred to as mura) are going to be terrible on the S4.
Also subpixel structure really only affects color and not sharpness at such a high DPI, but from an academic standpoint it's interesting to look at the S4's screen under the microscope. The subpixel arrangement reminds me a lot of shadow mask CRTs with their circular dot structure.

Been trying out the WP8 launcher on my Nexus.
[t]http://i1.minus.com/iWg50wG1tLYI3.png[/t]
It's good, although it seems to take one too many presses to do something, and the legacy menu button, arghh!
legacy menu button
Check device manager when you plug it in. If it enumerates as QHUSB_DLOAD you're fucked and your only hope is JTAG.
Welp, I'm not sure how my PC is supposed to find a phone which is turned off, but will give it a try anyway.
[editline]24th April 2013[/editline]
Yup, it says QHUSB_DLOAD. :suicide:
Any ideas to what I can do to save it? What is JTAG?
In super layman terms, it kinda looks like someone is fixing your phone using a tiny defibrillator :v:
There's services that do it but it depends on the device and costs like 50usd.
BUT, Padfone 2 is definitely still under warranty.. So I'm wondering if they'd notice you rooted it before sending it in? I mean it's bricked for real, so I guess there's no way to tell? So THEORETICALLY you could get away with this by playing dumb and saying the phone just died?
Someone here probably knows more.
Oh man, Nokia are making a new keyboard phone with lumia-esque design

[editline]24th April 2013[/editline]
It has a dedicated whatsapp button.. I hope that's reprogrammable
What is a good app for doing a backup of my Nexus. I'm wanting to finally root it, but I don't want to go through the hassle of setting up every app again when it get's wiped.

[SUP][del]The WhatsApp button is for Asia and a few other countries only. Europe etc is supposed to get a fucking Facebook button.
Which is a damn shame because I'd totally buy this as a backup phone if it had the WhatsApp button.
edit: or maybe it wasn't this one specifically? I'm trying to find the damn article about it. Maybe it'll be two official versions.[/del][/SUP]
So apparently Asha 210 will be for Asia and Africa only. The Facebook button is on Nokia S40 Qwerty.
Screw you then, Nokia.
titanium backup
great app, wiping to change roms is easy and chill, no reinstalling apps or lost data
Does this work without root?
[editline]25th April 2013[/editline]
It is one I have used before.
Try Carbon, it works without root although probably isn't as precise as Titanium Backup.

I wish it would just have a generic programmable key that can be tied to an app or messaging client, not forced social networking
I can't see if it has an SD card or not, if it does I'm sold

This will be a goldmine for androidcirclejerk content and dubstep videos.
Bootloader unlock, now to start tinkering with my phone.
Are you doing it through one of the available toolkits, or manually through ADB? I find ADB to have a steeper leaning curve, but in the end it's just so much "cleaner" and faster once you know what you're doing.
Also makes you feel like a hacker :v:

Used ADB.
Can someone suggest me a good ROM for it, something quick, customizable and have a decent battery life? There are so many I have no idea what to choose.
Nexus 4 right?
- CyanogenMod: close to stock with more customization)
- AOKP: similar to CM, but some different types of customization. and unicorns)
- Paranoid Android: "per-app tablet layout" system (switching between phone/7inchtablet/10inchtablet on the go)
I'm on CM and I really like it.
- Also using intersectRaven's kernel for better battery life/less heating up. There's versions with color fixes too if you don't like how the N4 is undersaturated.
- Other good alternative is _motley's kernel.
I ran on motley's before, but now I'm using intersectRaven's kernel and I find it a tiny bit quicker, and it also seems like the battery drains slower.

Going to give paranoid android a go. Loved it on my Galaxy S, but the screen was way to small for it. Might be quite a bit better on the N4.
Loads of people use it on the N4 exactly because of the large screen. I still gotta give it a try someday.
