What would be the best option to play games at 2560*1440?
I could get either a 5970, a gtx480 or two 5870 (stretching the budget a bit tho).
I'd like to to buy a second (or third and forth 5870) gpu later on.
I know that a single gtx480 isn't really comparable to a 5970 or two 5870 but with a second gpu coming in the future it might still be a good choice.
Also I've seen on some benchmarks that the Ati cards might have problems running Metro 2033 with this kind of resolution, is it true?
Personally I'd go with a 5970, it probably would be the best compromise as it takes up less space and I could have CrossfireX with enough room to use a dedicated sound card without sacrificing performance.
What kind of PSU would I need? Is a good 850w enough?
Overall specs:
i7 930 (I'll probably overclock it)
Gigabyte UD3R
6GB or maybe 12GB DDR3
Two Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB in raid 0
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi
Keep in mind that I have yet to buy all this stuff so something might change.
Thanks and sorry for the long post.
Just wondering, why would you need four of the the best graphics cards on the market, in one machine?

Why not?
Also 2560*1440 isn't really small, more power is always welcome.
Well seeing as you can only see up to about 60FPS, you really don't need to play Crysis at 150.
But if you wanna have something that will last a while, try and get a 900W.

I don't know what makes you think I'll be able to play Crysis at 150fps!?

I don't see 150fps in that video and he's using a dual cpu + 4way Sli/CrossfireX and a smaller resolution.

Holy shit. Does this thing have enough cores? Well, I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the world that could get Crysis over 50-70.

So why did you reply the way you did?
I mean thanks for your time but frankly if the idea of someone else having a good computer doesn't jive with you you might just ignore the thread instead of questioning if I do or don't need something.
I don't want to sound rude but I simply asked which one is better not if they're needed.
Actually of the three choices, I'd say that they're all about even, depending on the game. The GTX480 has been known to kick the shit out of even a 5970 in certain DX11 games.
If I were you I'd go with a GTX480 and get a second for SLI down the road. And unless you're a hardcore overclocker with DICE/LN2 experience, don't get any more than that. You really won't need more than two for a looong time.
As for a PSU, get at least a 900w. I was using an 800w Kingwin for my old setup (Phenom II 940 and two GTX280's in SLI) and the fucker blew up on me. I'm serious; blew the FUCK up. Not taking anymore chances, went out and got a Corsair 1000HX.

WROooooOong it can still have a huge effect on smoothness, and running games at +100 fps has a much better respondse than running it at a solid 60

Well, I have to agree with you there. I'm just saying, don't spend that much if you really don't necessarily have to.

Thanks.
Yes thinking about it looks like it would be a good solution.
Do you recommend the Corsair? I heard great things about them but an actual user opinion would be nice.
Corsair PSUs are high quality, I would recommend one.
Enermax is where the party's at.

You can't see a difference between 100 and 1000 fps even if you tried.
SLI scaling is shite even at 3 cards, 4 is just idiotic.
SLI scaling is shite even at 3 cards, 4 is just idiotic.
Well luckily SLI is the only setup where I didn't want more than 2 gpus.
you can't see a difference between 100 and 1000 fps even if you tried.
60-100 =/= 100-1000
[editline]05:15PM[/editline]
difference in response time =/= seeing the difference
Get a PCPC power supply and a single 480 or 5970 now, then upgrade later with an identical card.

For older cards, yes. Fermi scales rather well at three.
Also, make sure you have at least a gig and a half for frame buffer per card at that resolution.

Corsair reigns supreme in the PSU world, except for the 1000w level. Enermax's REVOLUTION85+ is hailed as the 1000w king.

I got the Corsair 1000HX because it was on sale at Fry's for $130.

Shame they don't sell more computer things.
corsair rains supreme in the price:quality department. if you're just looking for quality get a PC P&C

He doesn't like the fact that you are going to waste your money on many graphics cards that you won't need within the next decade.

No but seriously, what he/you/everybody else think is a waste may not be for me and vice versa.
I just asked a technical question not an opinion on how I like to waste my money even tho it could be argued that 4 gpus no matter how overkill they are will have some sort of benefit especially at high resolutions.
What crt do you have? Or that is one fucked up lcd.
What crt do you have? Or that is one fucked up lcd.
It's probably a 27" Dell, they're the most well known brand I know of with a 2560 by 1440 LCD.

CRT? Pfft it's a Dell U2711.
Why should it be fucked up? It's just 16:9 instead of the more common 16:10 2560*1600.
A 30" is too big and too expensive so this 27" was the best choice being smaller, cheaper yet it has a high resolution which helps a lot with my job.
EDIT: @Callius: Yes you are correct good sir.

no, Enermax has higher efficiency and all of their higher end PSUs consistently output more power at load than advertised, unlike Corsair
and last thing: With the kind of load you're going to have (especially if you plan on getting two cards eventually) make sure your PSU is single rail. Anything else is asking for trouble.
depends on how the rails are handled, Enermax puts every set of PCI power connectors on another rail
