isn't android linux based also [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] you did not do your research very well did you
That rule went out the door with chrome. [editline]5th February 2011[/editline] although calling the android OS linux based is like calling the original XBox's OS windows 2000.
Only 'Active' operating systems? So no Lisa OS? :saddowns:
These alternative operating systems are interesting but (save for FreeBSD and Android) are useless unless you're just a hobbyist/OS enthusiast who likes to try out new operating systems
These alternative operating systems are interesting but (save for FreeBSD and Android) are useless unless you're just a hobbyist/OS enthusiast who likes to try out new operating systems
Chrome OS isn't useless!
FreeVMS. VMS is an OS that Pre-dates unix, It's more or less unknown today but still has an active community. If I'm not mistaken it's made for server use. I think it was HP that created VMS in th form of OpenVMS which is ironically closed source. Released all the way back in 1977, HP Still released OpenVMS but it's un-popular because of the lack of CPU Architecture support It's also quite expensive.
Don't forget Darwin UNIX. It's the OS X kernel.
Don't forget Darwin UNIX. It's the OS X kernel.
I'll add it once I'm off this god foresaken livecd. Any download for that? It's open source, right?
I'll add it once I'm off this god foresaken livecd. Any download for that? It's actually quite easy to install in a VM, it comes in a live CD and everything.
From the makers of C and C++, bell labs bring you a free operating system!
That's like saying Facepunch develops Garry's Mod. Also, you forgot OpenBSD, NetBSD, Windows CE, UnixWare, DragonFlyBSD, GNU, Solaris, Debian/kFreeBSD, Arch Hurd, ReactOS, Debian/Hurd, Windows Server, and the rest.
Stop rating OP informative; he's a computer illiterate poop shoveler.
How could you forget OS/2? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2 I mean, it's not technically Unix based or Windows based... It was a remake which included several similarities.
Some other cool ones are NeXTSTEP (outdated, but awesome for it's time), RISC OS (which isn't too out of date), MiNT (probably outdated), Inferno, Free BSIE, MirOS BSD, DesktopBSD, PC-BSD, XTS-400. Let's also not forget the Java based; Java OS, JNode, JX, Sanos, SavaJe.
Ok guys, there's only one rule: Can't be a linux distro unless it's heavily modified i.e. ChromeOS, Android OS, etc.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Chrome OS is as heavily modified from Linux as Ubuntu. In other words, not much at fucking all.
