how the hell are they gimmicky and lackluster?
I can see why mac where overprices a couple of years a go, but now you get what you pay for. And OS X is a way better OS when it comes to most stuff other than gaming and server hosting IMO. But the way to go is a mac computer with os x and windows via bootcamp. Best of both worlds.
Fun story: I began a new school, we had PC's and they said: You're all getting macs and everyone was like: Nooo, macs suck. Then we got macs, and now 1 year after most people love the OS and the computers, and I've seen a major increase in student buying other apple products there too.
