I'm getting 2 free servers from the United Nations and need a few answers

It's not going to be worth $10,000 unless it's sprinkled with gold dust or contains top secret information.
Still the HDD might not be wiped, you can get machines that can read a HDD without spinnng it
in other news, buy like 4 GPUs and make a quad-sli/crossfire gaming rig
I'm not gonna lie to you, i'm jelly.
Does it have PCI-E x16 slots?
If so make a monster gaming computer.
I would run CentOS on it and get some minecraft servers going and a file server.
Opps sorry, the processors are double Intel Xenon 3.8 GHz on each server.
In that case, don't stare directly at the CPUs.
:downsrim:
Steal United Nations documents, leak them and host them on the servers you got from them.
A good server won't be of any use if your internet isn't any good. Sell them.

No sell one and keep the other and use the money to buy better internet
God damnit, I wish I was you. Life is shitty.
I am going to use these servers as a fileserver and media server.
Read the damn post.
I saw Hak5 set up a music server with some program, it looked really cool you should try that and host it for facepunch.

They're massive overkill for file/media servers.
And they're powerhungry beasts too, compared to alternatives for those 2 scenarios.

was the program called Icecast??

I'm just surprised/shocked that their policies would even allow you to come withtin 10 feet of the actual drives, places like that usually have them removed and physically shredded.
That is assuming when you get the servers that they even leave the drives in.

I'd be very surprised if they did... And finding drives for that particular server series isn't going to be very cheap...
Keep in mind these are from 2004. They have 2 single core CPUs in them. They are huge power hogs. Even if they were worth $10k in 2004, they are worth no more than a couple hundred bucks now (if you're lucky). Definitely overkill for a file server.
Sorry to be 'that guy' but it's really not even worth it for you to run those since they're probably quite loud.

How about you read them? I was replying to the people that were suggesting that he hosts over the internet with them.

This guy's right, I took home about £20,000 worth of server, I might get £400 the lot.. I'm only keeping them for university projects...
And yes, they will be ungodly loud.

They're great for getting people's attention though.
Just turn it on and watch them look around for a jet engine :v:

Apparently, they're especially good at impressing people on Facepunch.
I'm going to go ahead and assume that these servers outspec your current computer (with the probable exception of graphics card). In which case, transplant your HD and graphics card into one of them and use THAT as your new rig.
Whichever of the three computers you have now are going to become servers, I would recommend either Windows Server or Linux, whichever of those you're more accustomed to (I hear the desktops for the newer WinServer OSes look/feel just like Win7). Or you could run Linux on one and WinServer on the other.

Not only is your theory impractical, it's most likely impossible. The Poweredge 1850s are 1U rackmount servers. 1U rackmounts aren't tall enough to fit a conventional graphics card. Also, the hard drive interface on the servers is SCSI. I can almost guarantee that the drives he has in his current PC aren't SCSI (they're probably SATA or IDE if it's older). So, if the UN destroyed the disks, he's probably screwed anyway. That being said, the whole transplant process would be a total waste of time. Why move a bunch of parts from your current (working) pc into an oddly sized, loud, and power hungry hunk of old hardware? If his current rig is even remotely new, it probably outspecs the servers anyway.
I hereby deem myself the crapper of this thread. Damn it sucks when I'm right.

I'm not going to bitch at your post. I didn't read the whole thread so that's not my right.
Holy shit, not only did I Slowpunch, I didn't automerge. What the fuck.
Donate one to Garry and sell the other one.
Donate one to Garry and sell the other one.
Or Garry could just buy a new and more power efficient server with better bang-for-the-buck AND "processing power to electrical power ratio" from Dell with a company discount
OP should just sell them on eBay/craigslist

They are very loud indeed. I turned the very same server on in my room and it sounded like there was a loud vacuum cleaner on in my room. After a couple of seconds it gets softer, but it's no sound you want to hear when you sleep
melt them down and take all the silver, gold etc valuable minerals in them
