The reason people don't encrypt usernames/passwords in config files is because it's useless. Obviously your program needs access to the credentials if they are saved, so no matter what you do, anyone with access to your machine also has access to the credentials. The proper thing to do here is to rely on your file system's security, which should prevent other users of your machine to read your private files. You accomplish this by saving user information in AppData/Roaming or somewhere similar. Encrypting the user and password is simply a false sense of security, and worse than not encrypting anything, because of that false impression that there is security present.
So, in short, I save the XML file in AppData and we're both happy? Ok, I guess that could work out. Good point, too! Anyone tested the beta? Come on people, don't delay the release :D

DPAPI looks nice too, but it seems to me like you'd have to provide some entropy to make it secure, and then you're back to the problem of decryption needing to be possible so you have to store that somewhere. Unless I'm understanding it wrong.
The Ultimate Problem: FTPBox can't sync to the folder I need it to sync to. The Initial Problem: The "Choose a Directory" thing didn't display ALL my directories. The Proposed Workaround: Give it a random directory from the list, then close FTPBox and change settings.xml to point to the correct place. The Problem With The Workaround: When I launch FTPBox after that, it freezes, and I have to kill it via Task Manager.
Would totally use this, but my school's firewall garbles all ssh packets. I can find an unblocked port, but for some reason SFTP and SSH wont connect although other stuff does.
Not a FTPbox user myself, but I still want to congratulate you FTPbox devs: an estonian tech magazine([digi]) has a guide on how to set up your own Dropbox using FTPbox.

Yes so get to work! :v:
Yes so get to work! :v:
I'm sorry that I haven't had time to develop the past weeks, but I'm very busy with school and since it's my last and most important year I can't help it. I have some free time today so I'll spend it working on the project. I'll try to get a new release with web interface working by night! But I can't promise anything...
That article mentions that FTPbox is quite buggy, so I think you should work on it more. It mentions settings resetting, no unicode filenames support and inefficient file monitoring(uses a lot cpu and network while idling).
Instead of adding new features, maybe you should try fixing the problems that already are, instead of adding new ones.
That's what I'm doing actually and why this release took so much time. I've been trying to fix syncing problems with FTP, mainly those remote-to-local syncing errors like when deleting and/or renaming files. In fact, the web interface feature is ready! I had some progress, but it's not ready yet... I have now broken SFTP syncing, it syncs again and again for some reason. When I'm done fixing that, the new version should be ready to go...

Hello everyone, long time no see... So, to the point. The thread has been dead for the past two months, but I figured I should make a post presenting what has changed during that time. Ever since my last update here, two updates have been made: 1.7.3, which comes with: - SFTP port optional - French and Dutch translations - Bugs fixed and 1.7.4 (released today): - Web Interface (official release) - Fixed deleting folders that contain files. - Fixed tray messages not always showing properly. - more bugs fixed. About the web interface: The web interface is a way of viewing and managing your files directly from your web browser. For now, you can only upload and remove files, but more are about to come, like viewing/editing files directly from the web interface. And yes, the web interface will update automatically, I've taken care of that already! :D Just make sure you use a password to protect your web interface, in case someone would want to delete your files for whatever reason... Here's a screenshot: (blue is for file/folder hovering) On another note, I have worked hard on fixing bugs for these past couple of months, and as a result FTPbox is much more stable now. So I suppose getting out of beta shouldn't take much time. When FTPbox does get out of beta, I'll make a new thread fully explaining and presenting the application, hoping I will get more people to give it a chance... And that's why I am not updating this thread, as well. Till then, follow @FTPbox on twitter if you want to stay informed! Also, if you want to translate FTPbox to your language, check out http://ftpbox.org/contribute for details, I've made it quite easy to contribute by translating, I think. Just remember: FTPbox is already translated to Spanish, German, French and Dutch. Hope you'll enjoy the changes!

/public_html: no such file or directory ? That doesn't make much sense does it? :S

How come the last line to the left is suddenly in Dutch.
How come the last line to the left is suddenly in Dutch.
Woops, I'll fix that. It says: "Account's full path:"
Woops, I'll fix that. It says: "Account's full path:"
I know, notice the flag ^^
I know, notice the flag ^^
I did, just making it clear for others. I fixed it now, the new setup will have it right. (Im not gonna make a new release just for that, though)
I did, just making it clear for others. I fixed it now, the new setup will have it right. (Im not gonna make a new release just for that, though)
Right, my bad.
/public_html: no such file or directory ? That doesn't make much sense does it? :S
It's there, that error popped when I clicked the + in front of it.
It's there, that error popped when I clicked the + in front of it.
I got that, but that's the error message: "/public_html: no such file or directory" Add me on steam, because the link to your profile doesn't work, and I'll try to help you tomorrow with getting it to work...
You should be using .NET resource files (or something else than hard coding every single string) to handle translation. The approach you have right now doesn't scale at all and causes silly issues like the above.
I am about to add FTPS support, but I cannot find anyone to test it. Can anyone from here test FTPS?
