Bloat hasn't been about HDD space for ages.
So what does the extra "bloatware" affect? I HIGHLY doubt someone would load up every piece of extra software at once..
You haven't even presented any facts.
In fact, he's outright ignoring the facts. Qt is an excellent framework, and is therefore widely used. KDE is built upon Qt and offers a highly integrated, intuitive, and robust desktop environment. Sadly I don't think critics even care to take note of the dedicated community behind KDE, either. Haters will be haters.
Then fire up Synaptic and, uh, remove it?
Installing things I want is just so much better than uninstalling things I don't.
Installing things I want is just so much better than uninstalling things I don't.
Then simply don't use Mint? Just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's the worst thing ever v:v:v

- Linux Mint (don't use this however, unless you received a head injury in a war, all the other distros on the list have been kidnapped, or you receive a call from a terrorist threatening to kill your mother unless you install it)

There's nothing wrong with Mint other than massively outdated packages due to using Ubuntu frozen package pools, but nothing that can't be fixed with manual installations from source. In fact, I've got pacman and pkgbuild installed so I can install anything off the AUR or even Arch's repos, the only downside being that I have to install dependencies manually through apt since I have to run pacman ignoring dependencies to avoid conflicts with existing files. Besides, took me only a few seconds to remove crap programs like Mplayer and get VLC and such going, with proprietary drivers and hardware acceleration.
Eh, I simply don't like KDE because of the default setup and how convoluted the menus seem to be sometimes, I have a hard time with configuring it.
I didn't like KDE 3.5 for the same reason. KDE4 is far less convoluted.
Anyone try out fedora 15? I'm downloading it now. First time checking out gnome3 too.
I didn't like KDE 3.5 for the same reason. KDE4 is far less convoluted.
Yup, besides most of the time a program is a simple Alt+F2 away. I'm just started using the shortcut after learning how much easier it makes things. Menus suck for repetitive opening anyway, shortcuts fix that. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline]
Anyone try out fedora 15? I'm downloading it now. First time checking out gnome3 too.
trying it now, too.

Menus suck for repetitive opening anyway, shortcuts fix that.
I don't use the Alt+F2 shortcut that much. Alt and F2 aren't keys that I can hit without looking at the keyboard. I just keep all 5 of my frequently used apps in my Favorites. If I need something else I use the search box in the Launcher menu. I don't see a way of changing the shortcut either.
Then simply don't use Mint? Just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's the worst thing ever v:v:v
Oh for god's sake I'm not using Mint, I'm just arguing against using it.
Oh for god's sake I'm not using Mint, I'm just arguing against using it.
Why does it matter if someone else uses it?..
Anyone try out fedora 15? I'm downloading it now. First time checking out gnome3 too.
When you do, check this out http://www.webupd8.org/search/label/gnome%20shell?max-results=10 There's some nifty themes and extensions for Gnome 3/Shell out there. But beware that some of them are..well, rather unstable. Just be careful and make sure you know where the extensions directory is so you can delete them later.
I didn't like KDE 3.5 for the same reason. KDE4 is far less convoluted.
Hm. I think I last tried KDE when it was on, like, 4.2? I guess I'll give it a shot again sometime.
So far I really like the look of fedora 15. Gonna have to put more time into it though. I hate how grub never sees my win7 partition. Something is buggy with that thing.
...Is Sabayon any good?
...Is Sabayon any good?
I think that there's a TWIL review. here:http://www.thisweekinlinux.com/2010/06/sabayon/ it's old, I know.

I can never seem to get my networking right for arch. I can ping google.com but I'm not getting any returning messages it just keeps looping and looping. I have my download server setup and all that stuff. Hmmm any ideas?
CLI programs won't show up on the menu. You would need to get a GUI frontend to make it work like that. To learn how the program works, you can type "man program_name" either on the terminal, or search that up online.
Alright, I just finished installing Cryptophane. Thanks for tolerating me man. I think I'd like try my hand at Ubuntu now as well, the live Cd should arrive any day now.

Very limited experience with Linux. Tried installing Ubuntu, me, a friend who is a linux junkie, the IRC support channel and the support forum couldn't figure out why I couldn't get any sound. And I really like it.

Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 10.10.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 303 0 0 wlan0

As I suspected, you have no default route. Now the question is why. That 303 in the Metric column is strange too: on my systems NetworkManager sets it to 1 for a wired connection, 2 for wireless. The default is zero. I have no idea where the number 303 came from. Open up the settings for your wlan0 connection: right-click the NM tray icon, "edit settings", choose your ESSID on the Wireless tab, and click the Edit button. On the "IPv4 Settings" tab, there's a "Routes" button that opens a new window, and in that window there are two checkboxes. Are either of them checked? Also, what version of NM are you using? [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] Also, is it actually set to use DHCP? (On the "IPv4 Settings" tab in the NetworkManager config window.)
networkmanager 0.8.999-1 Neither of the two checkboxes are checked. Yes, it is set to use DHCP. I have all my settings in my rc.conf disabled for wlan0 Running Arch x64 BTW. Wicd or Connman aren't an option because WICD doesn't have an applet compatible with Gnome 3 (which I intend to use) and Connman doesn't have a decent GUI frontend that works.
What are you connecting with and how? Are you using DHCP or are you setting a static ip?
I fixed it. I installed gnome3 and than rebooted and now when uDev switches my resolution to 1080p my monitor goes to sleep within the next 5 seconds and doesn't even give me time to login. Any idea how I can fix this? will the fallback option allow me to fix this?
networkmanager 0.8.999-1 Neither of the two checkboxes are checked. Yes, it is set to use DHCP. I have all my settings in my rc.conf disabled for wlan0
That all sounds correct, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Either you have something else that's conflicting, or it's a bug in NM. Something you might try: at the point where you'd run dhclient manually to work around the problem, instead right-click on the NM icon and uncheck "enable networking", then wait a few seconds and re-enable it. That should make NM renew the DHCP lease and reconfigure the interface. If it resolves the problem, you may have something else interfering with your network configuration during bootup. BTW, that version number 0.8.999 is an "almost ready to call it 0.9, but not quite" sort of number. Version numbers like that typically indicate development versions rather than stable releases, so I'd be wary of the possibility of significant bugs. Would it be practical to install 0.8.4 and see if that helps?
No, the latest version of networkmanager in the Arch repos is 0.8.999...I don't feel like trying to track down a 0.84 pkg for Arch.. [editline]24th May 2011[/editline] ... Well, then. Downgrading my kernel to a version that isn't from testing (whoops) and/or installing dhclient fixed it! And now the wireless on my main windows PC is fucking up. HUZZAH! (fuck computers)

There's tons of online documentation that makes it needless. I found this site is pretty good at explaining the shell commands and shell scripting.
I want to use Ubuntu more often but most of my apps are either Windows only or better on Windows (or just more convenient).
so just use windows!
