Posting from Ubuntu Netbook Edition, installed from within Windows. I like it so far, I really like the Email/Calendar.
You didn't use Wubi did you? It's not that hard to install via cd. If you used wubi, you are going to start noticing problems and you most likely have a broken installation.
Posting from Ubuntu Netbook Edition, installed from within Windows. I like it so far, I really like the Email/Calendar.
Wubi is notorious for giving broken, unstable installations. You should expect problems. Also HDD access time is slower than a normal install.
I seriously hate it when people who mix Ubuntu and linux. People call Linux Ubuntu, Linux commands Ubuntu commands and so on. Or they go and say that they don't like Linux because of the interface (They tried Ubuntu and they assume it's linux.) Ubuntu is getting shittier with every increase in the version number. There seriously needs to be a new "Popular" distro. Ubuntu is giving a bad image to Linux. It seems like the more we get idiots using Ubuntu the more real Linux users can't get nice things. I mean look at this
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/rDnh3.jpg[/img_thumb] Ubuntu joke
http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=23774243&postcount=4623 Ubuntu Joke? Ubuntu Joke!!??? It's linux FFS! sudo is NOT RESTRICTED TO UBUNTU! :argh:

He understands the joke, he's just annoyed at the fact that someone called it an "Ubuntu Joke", when it actually has no direct link with Ubuntu at all. Only Linux.
Can someone find me a download of "livedosgames" ? Because I used to have It and I love it because it has an incredible catalog of games.
Wubi is notorious for giving broken, unstable installations. You should expect problems. Also HDD access time is slower than a normal install.
This. A wubi install never got past booting into GNOME for me. Later I installed ubuntu from a USB drive and it worked fine. Now on Arch, finally got that WLAN to work :3 [editline]05:30PM[/editline]
how did you manage that one?
I copied something in there. cp apparently decided it's a good idea to overwrite everything with... nothing. I really don't know. [editline]05:31PM[/editline]
Can someone find me a download of "livedosgames" ? [editline]05:34PM[/editline] Wait, no, 0 seeds .__.
Ubuntu Joke? Ubuntu Joke!!??? It's linux FFS! sudo is NOT RESTRICTED TO UBUNTU! :argh:
to be fair, it is a good joke
I used Wubi, yes. It works pretty good so far and is a good alternative since I had no USB-Stick ready at that time, I'm just trying. No errors so far. I can imagine slower HDD speeds, yea, since the whole OS is in a single "file".
to be fair, it is a good joke
Of course it's a good joke, it's from XKCD :3

yep he is
Ain't you that guy who had enormous problems installing from CD, or am I confusing you with someone else?
I was burning it wrong, but i did install with cd. I was a little dumb, i was burning it wrong the whole time and i went through 2 cd's.
2 cds, I hate CD-RW discs. [editline]12:30AM[/editline] Wait, you must have used more than 2 discs, right?
So I am using ubuntu and whenever I try to run an executable I've got to go into properties to make it run. How do I make it so it lets me run it without me having to do that?
2 cds, I hate CD-RW discs. [editline]12:30AM[/editline] Wait, you must have used more than 2 discs, right?
I had 3 700mb discs which were just enough to hold the iso. But the first time I burned it by extracting the contents to it, second time I actually used a image burner and it worked.
I found this interesting... http://qntm.org/suicide
I found this interesting... http://qntm.org/suicide
Didn't know you were a Disturbed fan Pixel. :buddy:
http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/439 So damn true.
Ten thousand fists in the aaaiiiiiirrrrr. Totally off subject.
I used to listen to disturbed but then I eventually realized that all their songs sound the same.
They made a Genesis cover, (Namely, "Land of Confusion") it doesn't sound exactly the same.
their land of confusion cover does sound exactly the same as the rest of their songs. and what about the other covers they've done, there is usually at least one on each album. also 0:20 to 0:40 is a prime example of EVERY FUCKING DISTURBED SONG
I have windows 7 has anyone tried it on 7 i wanna be safe because it doesn't mention 7 in compatibility thanks. http://wubi-installer.org/
wubi is bad on all operating systems
Reason? btw I just want linux just to explore not for a actual purpose.
if you want to explore, install it in Virtualbox. Wubi leaves you with unstable or otherwise broken installations.
I have windows 7 has anyone tried it on 7 i wanna be safe because it doesn't mention 7 in compatibility thanks. http://wubi-installer.org/
There are no real compatibility issue here. The only thing that will remotely affect windows 7 is GRUB (the bootloader). Because of the way GRUB handles other OS' and the way Windows 7 boots it's fairly easy for GRUB to boot either Windows or Linux. (It does it automatically) If you only want to try using a VM is a good Idea. You can also download the ISO, burn it and boot from the CD. It will allow you to use and test ubuntu without touching your HDD. You might also want to look into other distros like Fedora and Linux Mint. They are both very easy on the user and they work great. They will also let you use a LiveCD (Trying it from CD). Wubi is an option for simply trying ubuntu. The problem is that you may leave unsatisfied for the wrong reasons. Wubi is notorious for broken installations. I'd say that running the distro in a virtual machine might just be the best solution. It allows you to run the distro as if it were installed natively and also allows you to try a distro for a longer period of time. You can also try other distros very easily. Ohh and it also gives you an experience of the installation process.
I know this isn't ENTIRELY related to Linux, but I just recently started using GPG. (The main reason I'm posting this here is because Windows lacks very many GPG utilities, and I prefer to do things in terminal anyways) What prompted me to do so was that one of my middle school friends made a facebook account, and added me. Then he started talking shit on a bunch of our old middle school friends, which seemed odd. Three days later, I got a friend request from the same friend, but with a different account. They both managed to get a similar amount of friends and are currently indistinguishable from each other. Apparently the fake one has done enough damage to make some people have their parents talk to this friend's parents (which I assume prompted the real one to make a facebook). Now I know that my friends wouldn't have the tech know-how to create a web of trust, but it made me think about how someone could do that to me. So I'm trying to build a web of trust among 10-15 of my closer friends who actually use linux. Also, I'm relatively new to this specific linux forum, but I've had ubuntu on my netbook for a few months now and I'm considering repartitioning my desktop and installing either install ubuntu or step it up a bit and install arch or something. [editline]11:03PM[/editline] Oh yeah, and sending encrypted stuff to friends will make us seem like 1337 h4x0rz in front of anyone else... /sarcasm
