How in the fuck do i get a linux ISO bootable on a U3 device using the CD-Rom emulation? I used the Universal Customiser to put it on the drive, but it tells me there's no operating system found. I rather use the CD-Rom emulation part of the drive, rather than the userspace. Can anyone help me with this?
edit. Fixed it.
I was reading up on the changes in Xorg 1.8.x and noticed that HAL became obsolete. When I first installed Xorg still used HAL so I installed it as well. Since Xorg doesn't need it anymore is it safe to remove from my daemons?
hal is obsolete now what?
I'm using 1.8 and I've still got HAL
Me too, I still have it running. Since it's obsolete I see no point in running it. I wanna know if it's safe.
Ok, so im running Debian from the command line and I cant figure out how to connect to my router.
I have an ethernet cable connecting this computer to my router, and the router goes directly to the modem for DSL.
when i run ifconfig, it shows an ip of 127.0.0.1
Any ideas?

Some other stuff still uses HAL. K3B does, and some other random apps.
Hal was replaced by udev in Xorg, and the other apps are supposed to stop using hal eventually.

You can still use Hal in 1.8, but udev is the new and preferred way.
edit.
Images weren't working.

Run:
dhcpcd eht0
This will get a proper IP address from your router.
for convenience I will post here:
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and I recently installed it on a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 laptop. When it finished it just had a small screen, instead of full. Any help is much appreciated!

where are all your files stored? it's pretty obvious that you don't have the right directory set in your nginx config

Fixed it. I think I should stop asking for help until I do more troubleshooting.
Would I have to emulate games if I switch to Unbuntu?
Edit: Yes I do. What software is best for performance? Does Wine do games or do I have to buy Cedega or something like it?

wine does games generally pretty well but in my experience cedega and crossover do them better.
Scratch what I said- I fixed it.
Anyone know how I can get Arch on a USB drive? Unetbootin doesn't seem to work for Arch
Please tell me I can still change my background on Ubuntu.

Right click on your desktop > change desktop background.
Got a quick question about cfdisk and partitioning:
On my main PC I realised there was 30Gb of unpartitioned space on my first disk (sda) at the beginning of the disk. The remaining 430Gb of the disk is filled with personal data.
When I fired up cfdisk in the arch install, it listed the data partition as sda5 and logical. I added a primary partition and swap (logical) but now my original partition is listed as sda6 (primary is sda1, swap is sda5) and I need to know if writing these changes to disk will effect my data.
Thanks
Decided to risk it and everything worked fine :v:
I got a question as well, im having problems with my laptop and windows 7
it keeps giving me BSoD and i think its a hardware issue, i was considering putting Linux on it but if it was a hardware issue and it was just going to crash every now and then then i may as well stay as it is.
Anyway my question is if theres a hardware issue does linux crash and such or does it just wait for the hardware to respond? like ram or hdd? i know theres a huge list of things that could go rong and each thing is diffrnt but in general how does it react?

Quite a few linux live cds have memory and cpu tests that test the integrity of the hardware, might be worth getting one and letting your pc run through the hardware tests to see if there are any faults. The BSOD could be due to faulty memory.
Well i did a HD and ram test with ultimate boot cd
HD passed and Ram didnt give me any errors but it was only a 45min test(i know proper tests can go on for hours) so dont know what it is :/
Mint 9 bypassed HAL at startup, it's somewhere in their release notes.
Quick question; for those who have Steam in wine, does it lag like a bitch? I go and click on a game to play in the library, and it hangs there for 10 seconds before it does anything.

steam itself does, the games don't though so I'm all good.

Bummer. My games lag just as bad as Steam does, Compiz enabled or not.
