stuff
Thanks for the answers, pretty helpful.
I started at Mint and I am still on it. :frown:
I started at Ubuntu (9.04) and I'm still running it. Though, only because shit Vista doesn't work anymore and Wubi is the only thing keeping this computer alive.
I started at Mint and I am still on it. :frown:
I started at Suse, thought it was shit, then waited a few years, tried ubuntu, thought it was shit. Then later I tried mandriva, Suse again and some other distro's. Then went to ubuntu and liked it. After that I installed mint 7 on my laptop :) And I'm still using mint (I'm just using mint 9)
obviously you shouldn't jump straight into LFS though, I find Debian is always a nice place to start
I started with Ubuntu. I bet I would find Debian too hard at the time :v:
Jesus fuck, I keep trying to install Arch, but it keeps going to a black screen with nothing after the package installation :c
Jesus fuck, I keep trying to install Arch, but it keeps going to a black screen with nothing after the package installation :c
You might have gotten a corrupt copy. I've never seen the installer script do anything like that.
You might have gotten a corrupt copy. I've never seen the installer script do anything like that.
It was writing to the hard drive though But, I waited four hours and nothing else happened.
Sounds like a corrupt copy. Re-flash the USB or burn a new CD. If that fails redownload it.
openssh-server wants to install x11-common. It's not a dependency. Why does it want to install it and how can I avoid it installing anything that it isn't dependent on?
well you could always compile it
well you could always compile it
You mean configure make make install or something more difficult?
You need to use the MD5 sums, they're very handy.
Fresh install of debian with nginx, php5-fpm, and openssh-server. Feels really really good man.
You mean configure make make install or something more difficult?
in this case yeah probably configure make make install possibly just make make install or just unpack it to the directory it should be run from
I just installed Ubuntu and I'm not really liking it so far. It just seems to be loaded with a bunch of useless shit. But I guess I have to start somewhere. Where do you guys think I should go after this distro? And how can I learn Linux terminology and shit so I don't fail fucking awfully when I try to install Arch?

They have a great beginners' guide that will teach you everything you need to know: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide
in this case yeah probably configure make make install possibly just make make install or just unpack it to the directory it should be run from
It's whatever. I just installed it with the dependencies. I've only got 179 packages installed anyway. Next thing to do is setup an ftp server so I can allow other people ftp access into their websites without having complete access to server.
FTP is evil.
Garry is evil. Are you going to back that statement up?
Garry is evil. Are you going to back that statement up?
Wait what? :ohdear:
I'm starting to prefer SCP to FTP.
I'm starting to prefer SCP to FTP.
It's loads better :3:
I'm having big problems with gtk themes. I install them by extracting the zip to ~/.themes, and then I install it using gtk-theme-switch. The install seems to work, but only a few elements of the theme work, such as scrollbars, while the rest is horribly grey and bulky. What's the correct way of installing themes such as this one: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Drakfire+Equinox?content=132343 Thanks very much.
This thing with gtk themes is that they are often based on other themes. So you have to get the other themes for them to look right. [editline]06:13PM[/editline] You would probably need this one. http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Radiance+Drakfire+Mod?content=123474 The way you installed it is fine BTW. [editline]06:15PM[/editline] Ohh and what distro are you on?
