I would suggest putting in the disk for a fresh install
What the fuck Ubuntu killed itself
It just kicked itself into a initramfs session. Do an 'fsck' on the volumes and try booting again.
Why does Linux take so long to determine an incorrect username/password combination? It seems to immediately pick up on a correct entry, but when it's incorrect, there seems to be a couple of seconds of delay.
Why does Linux take so long to determine an incorrect username/password combination? It seems to immediately pick up on a correct entry, but when it's incorrect, there seems to be a couple of seconds of delay.
It's a security feature. It exponentially increases the time it takes to brute force a password. If you could have 10 guesses per second then in one minute you could try 600 different passwords. In an hour that would be 36,000 passwords. If each failed password attempt costs you 5 seconds then you're only going to have 12 attempts per minute and 720 guesses per hour. 36,000 guesses vs 720 guesses. It'll take a hell of a lot longer to crack a password with that small delay.
Got a HTC Diamond which I want to sync with my Linux Mint, but I can't really find anything which can accomplish this. Anyone have any experience with this?
just use the sdk, that's what I ended up doing
Had ubuntu 10.04 on an older slower desktop. It glitched up and wouldn't load so I had to put in my old 9.10 disk, re-install, and now i'm updating to 10.04... and then to 10.10 in how ever many days... arghhhh... Been thinking of dual-booting another distro to test it. Perhaps arch since you all love it so much.
http://xkcd.com/797/ this happened to me and is why I stopped using Debian
Well I'm assfucked now. After the update it glitched again. i could hear it, hear the drums, etc. Put in my password, let it load, and kept a solid black screen... I re-re-installed it and now I'm met with a black screen saying:
error:file not found. grub rescue>
What the fuck do I do?
Why does everyone in this thread recommend Arch so much? I haven't even heard of it before here.

Just plug in the USB, tell it to mount as a Mass Storage Device and then you can mount it into your Linux filesystem like any other USB device and run something like Rsync to it. [editline]11:20PM[/editline]
Why does everyone in this thread recommend Arch so much? I haven't even heard of it before here.
I don't. I usually recommend Fedora or Gentoo. :rolleye: Arch is alright, but I didn't like it that much.
Why does everyone in this thread recommend Arch so much? I haven't even heard of it before here.
I like it's init system, and it's package manager. I usually don't recommend it though.
Why does everyone in this thread recommend Arch so much? I haven't even heard of it before here.
Arch is facepunch' favourite distro.
What makes it sooo much better though? Doesn't look any different to me...
you get to put whatever you want in it. the idea is to get the lightest possible installation from a binary distro. Gentoo is the same concept but it's source-based instead of binary.

I had set the mobile to do ActiveSync when plugged in, I just changed it to do normal file transfer, then it detected it.
Well since so many installs of Ubuntu failed on that box I'm gonna put Arch on there. Pain in my ass computer... Oh well... I'll post here the results...
I'm thinking of switching to Linux, but when I install will it delete all of my files?
I'm thinking of switching to Linux, but when I install will it delete all of my files?
Unless you resize your windows partition to make room for linux, yes.
sooooooooooo it asked me to log in as myhost, put in root and my password. now i'm at a black screen with [root@myhost ~]# what do?
Gah fuck fedora, going arch. Holy fuck, there's nothing wrong with my hard drive, yet for cfdisk there is! http://morecode.wordpress.com/2007/02/17/how-to-fix-fatal-error-bad-primary-partition-1-partition-ends-in-the-final-partial-cylinder/ Only way to fix it: Remove all your fucking partitions and do a clean motherfucking install. What the fuck cfdisk.
sooooooooooo it asked me to log in as myhost, put in root and my password. now i'm at a black screen with [root@myhost ~]# what do?
Read the manual, extensively.
Fuck me, I completely erased my drive with Windows 7, a restore partition and the empty space which was before filled by fedora and before that filled by Mint. You won't be seeing this anymore: http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=24619213&postcount=2054 that's for sure. I AM going to install GNOME though. That DE suits me best.
no matter what I do, when I attempt to follow a guide I get error: <name> not found in sync db WHAT THE FUCK! RAAAAAAAAGE Wish Ubuntu would install correctly on this box...

ping google.com

do this instead
ping -c 1 google.com
error: failed to update core(no servers configured for repository) error: failed to update extra (no servers configured for repository) error: failed to update community (no servers configured for repository) error: failed to syncronize any databases and then I'm back to [root@myhost ~] connected, and that check doesn't return anything. just jumps to the next line... [editline]02:56PM[/editline] fixed connection issue, went to ping it again, got ping: unknown host google.com
