Fuck it, you guys. I'm switching to Arch. I don't feel like sleeping this weekend.
For some reason my ubuntu randomly crashes, if the mouse cursor is at its loading state, that just freezes, i can't type, can't move the mouse and if i press CTRL+ALT+DELETE nothing happens.
I have tried the following;
Burning 10.04 version
Burning 10.10 version
Re-burning the 2 versions
Re-downloading the 2 versions
Installing from USB drive
Any ideas whats going wrong?
Anyone got experience setting up Samba as the primary server? I can't get any of my PC's to authenticate with the server.
Post your smb.conf.
Also, add users you want to be able to access the shares with:
smbpasswd -a <username>
You may need to create the accounts as normal users first.

Disable ACPI.
I am also getting this, The only thing in /dev/disk/by-label is "System\x20Reserved" which is part of my Windows 7 install.
What do I do now? I have nothing to move to ARCH_201005.

That'll be why.

Okay, so I got Arch installed fine... installed gnome using pacman using the wiki guide.
Then this happens when I start gnome.

Any ideas?
Do you have a TV Tuner or something like that? When I tried running X11 with my PCI TV Tuner I got that exact same screen, but after removing it I had no problems.
Disable ACPI.
Sorry if this is extremely nooby, but what is ACPI?
And how do I turn it off. Running Ubuntu 10.04 at the moment.

Holy fuck okay, I decided to reinstall arch this morning, start from scratch again...
I failed to install the bootloader properly, yet I did it fine last night when I was drunk?
How is this possible.
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
So how do i disable it?
So how do i disable it?
There should be an option in your BIOS.
Got arch running again... :D

Can't seem to find anything like it, the only thing I found that I don't know about is
"XD" "Enables or disables your processors' XD bit"

You need to boot with:
acpi=off
Add that to the end of your bootloader entry (google, "GRUB bootloader config")

Is there any simple way of doing it?
All of the codes have just gone way over my head

Fuck yes...
Okay, so... For a person who's only ever used Ubuntu and CLI distros... What stuff do you recommend getting for a fresh Arch install?
all the same shit you had with Ubuntu but with a less broken package manager.

You make it sound like you have a vendetta against Ubuntu :buddy:
I will say whatever I damn well please, including answering the question.
Aren't you helpful.

I had to use it for a few weeks and wanted to kill myself the whole way through
i cannot function without windows :( i wish i could though
I can't stand Windows, but I need it for games and iTunes. :(
itunes sucks don't use it
I've got almost everything set up now. I need to compile Quod Libet to add media hotkey support for it, since the packaged one broke that recently :/
Here's why the proprietary ATI drivers are bad.
After tying to set up dual screen in the GUI control panel I realized that it was completely broken and didn't do shit.
So I ran the aticonfig command, and after rebooting it "works". Notice the quotes. The second screen only displays black, but I can move my mouse cursor to and it, and I can see it there. But absolutely nothing else will render on that screen.
What the fuck AMD.
that's because it's configured as two different screens instead of one big screen. X11 is really funky about dual monitors.
aka not AMD but your xorg.conf
Steam and Ubuntu (with Wine), how do they get along?
Steam and Ubuntu (with Wine), how do they get along?
the games pretty well. the client is a different story
[editline]04:28AM[/editline]
This is my xorg.conf. I don't know what to do.
I'm no good with xorg.conf so you're going to have to wait on that but I'm pretty sure it has to do with the screen sections.
Last time I tried Ubuntu with Steam (using Wine), the damn thing froze whenever I opened Steam, wouldn't finish downloads, etc.
And games...it would try and go fullscreen and break the installation. :(
Steam was okay last time i tried it (at least with Wine 1.3.3).
