Updated Ubuntu on my laptop from 10.04 to 10.10 and my built in wireless card is disabled when Ubuntu thinks it's on and enabled when Ubuntu says it's disabled or something like that, the connectivity color of the button is stuck to blue(connected to wireless) now... So basically it's either not ready or disabled. Any ideas before I try another distro or any recommendations for a distro to use? [editline]aaaa[/editline] Never mind, it's an issue with how Atheros 5k wireless devices are handled or something. It's happening in Fedora too and it's apparently been a problem with broadcom and atheros wireless cards for years now.. So much for this going to be easy.
Just got my Kubuntu 10.10 disc yay
Personal preferences :ohdear: [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] I'm not using KDE with it anyway
Why use Kubuntu then? :v:
Because I can
goddammit Xorg doesn't like it when the computer doesn't have a Monitor hooked up Crashes, so X11 fucks up.
I can't seem to be able to change the colorscheme of my terminal. Can anyone help? I'm using xterm, I have urxvt but that has a horrible scrollbar at the left which puts me off using it to be honest.

Hmm, those are bash, I'm using zsh. [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] Nevermind I understand it all now.
Holy crap, I just found out that the w3m browser can do images. It's pretty buggy; I think it's just using Xorg overlay or something, but I was shocked. Rate me clocks if I'm late. [editline]20th October 2010[/editline] Look out Firefox/Chrome/Safari. We've got a new sheriff in town.
I've been doing my Java assignment and I discovered that the JColorChooser looks like shit when you use GTKLookAndFeel. Does anyone know of a way to force the GTKLookAndFeel to do proper AA? I have managed to get AA to work with fonts but I don't know how to get it to work with that.
Okay guys, I need some help. I decided that I will probably buy a netbook this year and I've also decided that I will dualboot it. (windows/linux) Problem is, I don't know much about linux. So before I get the netbook I want to play around with a VM with linux installed first, but for that I need to know which distro I want to use. Here's the next problem, I don't know which distro I want. I want something which is not too complicated but at the same time not too simply. I would mainly use it to code HTML/PHP and if I ever get around to learn it, Java. So, which Distro would you FPers recommend to me ? I heard a few of you are using archlinux, would that be a good choice for me too?

Not as if it's a huge deal, though. The Arch wiki has guides on everything and pretty much all the stuff that isn't in official repositories can be found in the AUR.

I will check it out!

Currently downloading Linux Mint KDE Edition and I have a few questions. I am kind of new to the Unix world, so please excuse my ignorance. 1.) Does the KDE Edition contain everything the main one does? Other than of course, Gnome. 2.) Will I be able to update Linux Mint to 10 when it comes out, easily? Or do I have to download another ISO and run an updater module. (If there is one)
Does anyone know if they have removed the fire effect from the latest compiz fusion?

You might see KDE versions of programs or programs that exist in GNOME but not in KDE (or the other way around). If you do miss features you can install them manually. 2. Yes and no. Ubuntu and Mint have a thing called Distro upgrade, but it's never recommended as it's said to have many bugs. It's recommended to burn a new ISO and reinstall it when using Mint. Fortunately Ubuntu and Mint release a new version every 6 months. If you don't want to burn a new ISO and reinstall every time, I'd recommend a rolling release distribution. Examples of rolling release distributions are Arch (quite comprehensive) and Linux Mint Debian edition. [editline]22nd October 2010[/editline]
Does anyone know if they have removed the fire effect from the latest compiz fusion?
Both the "burn" animation and the "paint fire on the screen" effect exist on my compiz installation (Arch, compiz-core 0.8.6-2).
is there a specific reason as to why i update my repositaries in pacman archlinux using vm
Got despotify working, I had to upgrade my Unlimited account to Premium though :sigh:
Nice one ;D. Does anyone know how to remove the icons next to task names on awesome? Such as at the top of this screenshot: Also, how do I remove the awesome logo at the top left? And the picture at the far right which looks like a butterfly, not sure what that's all about.
Finally got me a USB stick, what distro should I put on it? I need something very light that our crappy school computers can handle.
Puppy Linux Damn Small Linux Even Arch if you can put the effort in.
just how much of an arch installation is configured specifically for the system during install? as I've mentioned, I've got this laptop, with no cd drive and no support for usb booting. could I use another system to put arch on the hdd, then swap it into the laptop without causing any serious issues?
Shit shit shit, I forgot the name of that program that will turn your compiled source files into a deb package and install it that way, rather than 'make install' which can be a pain to remove if it doesn't have a remove script. Anyone know what it's called?
I've got Damn Small Linux down now, I downloaded some program which would install it on a stick but it gives me an error "extract_iso must be run before install_bootloader" Am I using the wrong program? [editline]23rd October 2010[/editline] I also tried dragging the files from the ISO right over to the stick, but it wont boot from it.

Just finished installing Ubuntu on my laptop via Unetbootin, it looks pretty fuckin' awesome so far :D
