I'm so happy I got my file server running proper now. Much better. And it runs faster too than it did with Windows 2000 Server. The only "issue" I have is that I can't rename files over SMB. No big deal though, I just do it through FTP.
Add "writable = yes" to your smb.conf. Here's what the part of my smb.conf file that controls my user looks like.
[joseph] comment = joseph path = /home writable = yes valid users = joseph

what would be the best way to back up directories to another computer on the same network at a certain date? [editline]1st November 2010[/editline] both running linux of course
rsync and cron blergh, late... Didn't see nikomo's post.
Probably rsync + cron
I recommended that to him, but we both found out that it seems easier to just copy from a samba share if it's on a LAN.
If you know how to use cron and rsync, you'll be able to setup automated backups very easily. Funny thing is, I don't know how to use either of them. Oh well, I guess knowing what you can do with a tool is more important than actually knowing how to use it since you can just learn that.

I have piles of CD's sitting next to me, all containing various linux distros and whatnot. The problem is, they have no label. So I'm spending the next hour finding out what they all are and labelling them.
That shit happened to me once. I had ~5 discs with no labels, and they all looked the same. They were all different linux distros
that happens to me every time I go to install something
That shit happened to me once. I had ~5 discs with no labels, and they all looked the same. They were all different linux distros
I have a nasty habit of doing that. I probably have 25 unlabeled discs. 5 of those are probably Windows 2000 copies because I couldn't be arsed to find the original one and kept losing the copies. The other 20 is probably random Linux distros and other random data.
I just found this... It's a presentation that looks at the issues in Linux. It is from may 2009
that was pretty interesting. I agree with just about everything he said except that X.Org sucks because I've never had those issues.
That was a good video, but I don't get why the camera man zoomed in on the guys face, and then would show the slides for like, a minute
did you watch the whole thing? later in the video he shows the slides more often
I stopped watching like half way through, and I replied on what I watched. Gonna finish watching it right now
I'm trying to install arch on a USB stick. I'm having trouble getting it to boot properly (vmlinuz not configured properly :v:) Ah now it boots. I downloaded the dual architecture ISO so I can use the USB stick on all computers. edit: Whaha I can just install packages on my arch linux USB stick, I hope it doesn't affect the PC I'm running it on AND that the packages I install stay installed when I reboot from my memory stick :D Edit: I knew it, the packages I installed didn't save :/
My disk just got checked as part of a schedule on startup and said that me ext4 partition is 48% non-contiguous :S. I don't see why this has happened. How do I change this?
I think it gets fixed with the disk checkup. I'm not sure though.
Okay so after rebooting it saw all the HD space, but when I tried installing the packages I got ERROR: Could not umount /mnt/proc
This happened to me while my friend was installing arch on a VM. The package download would work, but then it would stop and freeze. I Ctrl+C'd it and restarted the setup. I had to setup my disks. It hit some issues and for some crazy reason pacman was keeping my disk busy. I simply killed all instances of it and reset my partitions and it worked.
Ah fuck arch, I put a Linux mint i386 on my stick. I hope I'll be able to use it on older computers too. Linux mint live DVD has all the programs I need, GParted, openoffice, thunderbird and firefox. The Linux mint partition on the disk is 1GB, the other 29GB is used for storage. This makes an amazing computer repair USB stick. Shit, Windows doesn't recognize the 29GB FAT32 partition. Why not?

I tried all three programs listed on the arch wiki. None of them were really succesful. Linux mint 9 works great. The only downside is that Windows is too dumb to get the idea of multiple partitions on a USB stick.
The arch installer is not the most reliable thing around. It works, but it also breaks sometimes.
How the hell do I setup xorg? I've been at it all freaking day, but no matter what I do, whenever I do startx, it doesn't register mouse or keyboard input anymore and I have to hard restart. FFF- I'm about to give up on arch.

I'm also having trouble installing Xorg on arch. I followed the guide, ran startx and I got a screen full of random coloured dots and shit. I tried installing nvidia drivers and now I get more errors. I'll post them in a second. [editline]edit[/editline] I'm going to reinstall. The only problem I have with linux is that I always end up fucking shit up.
hal/dbus fool start it before xorg
Yay, it's working now, although when I tried exiting 'startx' the screen went blue. o;

No but seriously, how do I stop X from fucking up arch when I switch back to the console or press Ctrl Alt Backspace?
