Sounds like a bad dns. Try pinging 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4, see if you get a fast response on those. If they respond fast then try setting them as your nameservers in /etc/resolve.conf. They're public DNS servers run by google, they should be fairly reliable.
I don't have an /etc/resolve.conf. Edit: I put it in my /etc/resolv.conf, but it resets itself every restart.
I don't have an /etc/resolve.conf. Edit: I put it in my /etc/resolv.conf, but it resets itself every restart.
Ah, put it in resolv.conf.head instead then resolv.conf is autogenerated, .head and .tail are prepended and appended automatically.
I don't have any .head files. Edit: I made the resolv.conf.head file with these contents:
nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4
Now testing if it works. Nope, didn't affect the resolv.conf file. Now adding nohook resolv.conf in the /etc/resolv.conf file, testing if it works. Jesus christ even that doesn't stop it from generating my resolv.conf. Edit: I've tried this too:
DHCPCD_ARGS="-C resolv.conf -q"
in /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd. My laptop refuses to listen, it still doesn't work. resolv.conf simply won't stop getting regenerated. Edit chattr +i this bitch FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU It's still fucking slow even though I use different DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) Still, when I ping www.google.com it's slow in finding the server, but when I enter ping google's IP it's just fast. Pinging 8.8.8.8 is fast, pinging my old DNS is fast. What the fuck is going on? It happens on different networks, I've tried on my home network and my school network. Both have the same issue. Pinging any other site has the same slow result.
time to get out your packet sniffer
time to get out your packet sniffer
What use would that have, the only thing I'd see is "looking up server" *ages later* "server found, pinging, ping received 20ms". It has something to do with looking up the server, like I said, pinging an IP always has immediate results unlike pinging a domain name.
Packet sniffing can see a lot, actually.
So I'm in a curious mood and thus came the idea of running Linux of my flashdrive. Problem is, there's about 10 billion linux distros to choose from. Any of you got suggestions for which distro I should get and what programs? Or would I be better off dual-booting it? If so, how do I go about it?
This is what the package sniffer "darkstat" gives me after some browsing on facepunch: The hosts sniffing: Note there's a line that says host name lookup failure This is an image of the graphs it shows me:
Looks like a shitty sniffer that doesn't give a lot of information.
looks like it's just pretty nmap
Okay, I'm trying to get Amarok to import the music from my Itunes from my Windows OS but it's not working. When I try to add it by using Play media, it gives me a 'could not mount the following device'. Anybody know how to solve this?

Can't remember the name of it though.
I just ran Linux mint live from my USB stick and I have the same fucking problem. I'm starting to think this is a hardware issue. This is iwconfig, how can the signal strength be MINUS 52?
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"eduroam" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:26:3E:67:DD:42 Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:on Link Quality=58/70 Signal level=-52 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Is there any way to get around the bad sectors warning in Gparted?

I've had that a lot in Ubuntu.
Could it be a hardware issue? I mean if: - It happens on different networks - It happens with both the installed Arch Linux and the Linux Mint Live USB. - It's always just me - It happens in different browsers (And when using ping in console) - Internet works fine on Eth0. (the problem is with wireless internet) Look at my ping logs, first I ping google (finding the server takes ages, then pings normally) Then I ping facepunch (100% packet loss) Then I ping a PC in the local network and it works just fine?
[falco@falcolaptop ~]$ ping www.google.nl PING www.l.google.com (74.125.77.104) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=1 ttl=55 time=17.7 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=21.5 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=3 ttl=55 time=20.0 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=4 ttl=55 time=16.5 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=5 ttl=55 time=22.6 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=6 ttl=55 time=19.8 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=7 ttl=55 time=19.0 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=8 ttl=55 time=18.6 ms 64 bytes from ew-in-f104.1e100.net (74.125.77.104): icmp_seq=9 ttl=55 time=17.9 ms ^C --- www.l.google.com ping statistics --- 9 packets transmitted, 9 received, 0% packet loss, time 8010ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 16.587/19.350/22.671/1.818 ms [falco@falcolaptop ~]$ ping www.facepunch.com PING forums-936339634.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com (184.73.155.126) 56(84) bytes of data. ^C --- forums-936339634.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com ping statistics --- 26 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 24999ms [falco@falcolaptop ~]$ ping 192.168.1.100 PING 192.168.1.100 (192.168.1.100) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.994 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=1.16 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=1.05 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=4 ttl=128 time=1.01 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=5 ttl=128 time=1.30 ms
Note facepunch wasn't down when I pinged it. I could access it on my PC just fine. On my school network when I pinged google I had ping times of 300ms to 2 seconds. Browsing was virtually impossible. When I tried to update the system through pacman, the databases would download for a bit and then just lose connection. What the fuck is going on? edit: MY INTERNET, IT'S BACK! It repaired itself! Out of the blue it just works again! This is BY FAR the strangest issue I have EVER had
Ubuntu or Mint?
I just ran Linux mint live from my USB stick and I have the same fucking problem. I'm starting to think this is a hardware issue. The closer to zero, the better. My phone and router does the same thing.
Apparently the problem isn't solved completely. It takes ages to find a server again, loading facepunch takes 30 seconds.
Is there any way to get a decent font rendering in chromium under ubuntu 10.10? I mean, when I turn off cleartype(that subpixel thing), it works for the menu and tabs, but not for websites themselves. Guess I'm used too much to windows. Edit: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=208396 Doesn't really help that much. Still a bit bugged. Guess I have to tweak a bit.
Looks fine for me on Linux :S. I find that fonts on Linux look better. I like the way they're rendered better.
Is there a way to get different backgrounds on each screen in openbox? I don't think feh can do it. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] feh just takes the image and stretches it across both screens. [editline]13th November 2010[/editline] Nevermind, nitrogen can do it.
I'm trying to get conky to open on startup. I added it to the Startup Applications Manager, however it opens up too soon (before my desktop background is even up) and then closes right away. I need to delay it for a few seconds and using the command "sleep 10 && conky" doesn't bring conky up at all.
Hey guys, i've been trying to set up FreeNAS lately, and when i finished setting it up, i keep trying to access the WebGUI and it doesn't work. So i try to ping the server, and i lose all my packets. Does anyone have a solution to that problem? Oh yeah, i'm also running the server under VMWare Player.
It's probably a fault of VMWare Player.
What's the best way to go about getting python2.6 going on a Debian Lenny install? backports doesn't have it, and I don't really want to have to delve into experimental.

Ubuntu > Fedora > (What else could I try?)
I'll save the regulars the effort and say Arch.
