Binary distros like Ubuntu and Fedora are weird about removing packages that come preinstalled. If you try to remove the nouveau driver, yum will try to take out huge chunks of Xorg as well. It'd just be easier to leave it alone.
And I don't believe that nouveau is part of your grub boot sequence anyway.

rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0
I have to have that in there to disable it.
When I upgrade kernels, won't I lose that custom line in the grub config?
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
I know it's all of 'init 3' then a 'vi /boot/grub/grub.conf' to add back in, but still. :effort:
It depends on the distro. I know that Ubuntu runs grub-config or whatever the name of the command is to update grub.conf.
I think there's a way to keep your changes but I forgot how.
there should be loads of ecc on ebay dude
The thing is due for a class next week. Sorta going to be a problem.
I guess I can run on only 3 sticks or two depending if it likes pairs or not.
I installed Xmonad and Dzen, and I can't figure out how dzen works, I'm not even really sure what it's supposed to do :v:
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
Ok, so it seems to need scripts, but where do I put them?
Trying to install the virtualbox guest additions in arch linux, getting this:
Makefile:152: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.
Even though i installed X and the arch-headers through pacman, any ideas? I'm bloody new to linux, the only thing i've been using since now was ubuntu and kanotix :(
edit:
I'm following this guide.
Okay, so after updating Ubuntu, GRUB now has 4 entries for Ubuntu with different versions. How do I remove the older one?
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Scroll to the bottom and delete the entry
I'm switching from Mint Julia to Debian Squeeze. Any words of warning or things to know before I do?
Okay, so after updating Ubuntu, GRUB now has 4 entries for Ubuntu with different versions. How do I remove the older one?
You can remove then manually in /boot/grub/grub.conf
Every time you have an update they will come back.
To remove them you can uninstall the old kernels and ubuntu will remove them from the menu.
What's a simple way to switch between command-line programs?
For example, say I have srcds open and I SSH into the server. How could I switch to srcds to see its prompt?
screen is the thing you need.
When looking up srcds on linux that's what a lot of people would use.
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
Also, CentOS is finally installing and not kernel panicking in my face. :D
[editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
I wanted to know. When CentOS finishes to install, does it restart on it's own or do I have to press a button.
The thing is that I'm doing the GUI installation and it's made for 800x600 minimum and I'm running at 640x480. I have to use Alt+N to go to the next screen and what not. I hope it restarts on it's own or at least prompts me.

Or I could have done a tiny bit of research and found http://www.srcds.com/db/engine.php?id=1098643920
but Screen is useful anyway, thank you for replying. :)
No problem, also, I answered my own question, it did prompt me. Now it's testing time :D
fuck installing Debian took Windows XP out of my GRUB menu for some reason
help, please
also, i'm sure it wasn't overwritten
assuming you have GRUB legacy (0.9...)
in /boot/grub/menu.lst
add:
# (2) Windows XP
title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1
if you use grub2 running
grub-update
should fix it. (as root)

fuck, grub-update isn't working
and there is no /boot/grub/menu.lst
I'm trying to get Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition up on a HP Mini 210, the only issue is the touchpad. It looks like the system recognises the area where you click as a part of the touchpad, so clicking and moving the mouse causes it to go haywire (Like when you put two fingers on a single-touch touchpad).
Anybody have a fix?
The only one I can really think of is using a mini USB mouse instead of a touchpad.. sorry mate
Also, I'm loving Squeeze.
[editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
aside from the fact that gnash is being a cunt to install
and strange, grub-update worked this time
[editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
this is my double post and I shall name it doubleposty
Did you run grub-update as root?
I have an Ati Radeon Xpress 200 and I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and on start up I get an error saying Unsupported chipset is there a way to add support for it myself?
The computer works fine I just get an error before the Ubuntu boot screen.
That's odd, I have that exact chipset and it works for me on Ubuntu.
It just runs desktop effects and games like trash.
It doesn't really cause me problems I just get an occasional graphical glitch and it slows down my boot time.
[editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
How do I install Thunderbird on Ubuntu 10.10?
Buttsex come reinstall Arch for me, I don't have any spare time to do so. I'll give you a cookie.
Synaptics has decided to off itself completely. The drivers don't load at boot anymore. This now gives me more than enough reason to learn dwm.
-Wrong fucking thread.-
Thought I'd just let you guys know, I somehow uninstalled pacman :v:
Buttsex come reinstall Arch for me, I don't have any spare time to do so. I'll give you a cookie.
set up ssh and tell me how you want it and I'll do it
Is there any way I can get rid of the red bar in terminator? Or at least change the color of it? It's kind of distracting.

So recently I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and tried to run it on bootup thinking it had live capabilities. It did not. Instead it tried installing and messed with my partitions. Now my laptop won't load into Windows and it has a partition of 0 bytes and no Windows install disk even sees the hard drive on my laptop (it does however appear in BIOS). What the hell happened?
Also the drive itself is fine. I was able to put it in my desktop and get all important files off it. I just can't boot from it
