I have been wondering for some time now; would it be possible to install linux on my computer and have it boot straight into a program? So that it would look as if I am just starting the game and not the computer?
Yeah. I did that on a MythTV machine, so it would boot straight to the MythTV interface.
Somewhere there is a setting for GDM to do an autologin, then in System->Preferences you got to Sessions and have it run whatever command you want when you log in.

yeah debian netinstall is very much similar to arch, just arch is a little more manual

slowpunch
anyway what distro should i stick on a 4 gb thumb drive
obligatory arch linux
somehow I feel like arch would not the best idea for something portable. I am probably wrong, but it just seems like there would be problems.

i would have time to fix it up at home but i don't feel like it at all
[editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
not saying that arch needs that much matinence
i'm thinking linux mint xfce or debian with fluxbox or openbox on it
debian squeeze with openbox and xfce-goodies. quick and easy to set up, good results
[editline]26th December 2010[/editline]
very low maintenance too

You would always have to run the fallback image, but I think it should be fine.
EDIT: Forgot about video drivers... not sure how that would work.
Holy shit I have found simple evidence that Linux is better than Windows! (obvious joke) Well at least better with touch pads anyway...
With Linux, my touchpad suddenly supports multiple finger tapping. When I tap my touchpad with two fingers simultaneously, it acts as if I pressed the middle mouse button. I have NEVER seen windows do that.
Holy shit middle mouse with my touchpad that's the only thing I was missing.
What the fuck is the middle mouse button even good for? I never found it useful...
Open link in a new tab.
Close a tab.
In openbox: Open super special desktop menu.
In gmod you can bind it to remove all props.
Openbox rc.xml snippet:
<context name="Frame">
<mousebind button="A-Middle" action="Press">
<action name="Close"/>
</mousebind>
</context>
Closes an application when you press Alt + middle click. The window doesn't even have to have the focus.
So simple yet SO useful! I've been wanting this.
Macs have that feature as well. Also, you can scroll with both fingers. Hm.. I have to test that last thing on my debian as well.
yeah MACS but macs don't have a right mouse by default, let alone a middle mouse button.
Macs. Hnngg. I'd like to see you customizing your global mouse shortcuts on OSX.
I'm talking about my avarage Packard Bell laptop of two years old suddenly being able to see taps with multiple fingers.
I bet next week Linux will raise my maximum screen resolution :v:.

I'm sure that's doable somehow, quite easily with some app I'd imagine.. when I get rich anyway.

I was quite startled as well when I found my T43(which I think is one of the first of the ThinkPads to come with a touchpad) all of a sudden reacting to more than one finger, felt really high-tech for that old guy. But most of the time I use a mouse anyway so it hasn't really changed my life.
I barely ever use my mouse when I'm using my notebook. Not even when it's actually connected. I like the fact that the touchpad is so close to my keyboard and I don't have to move my hand a mile to reach the keyboard.
I've never liked touchpads. Too much finger movement, little space, generally uncomfortable. Especially if I do something which heavily relies on pointer usage I find myself using both hands in that teeny area. It gets crowded. I prefer swinging my arm for miles.
Hello guys, long time no see. Could you please tell me if this setup is right? I finally decided to stop using WUBI (Long story) and install and OS the way God intended me to, partitioning and installing from a CD, but until recently I didn't have any free CD's and couldn't buy more, so now that I have one...
Is this right, guys?

Mind you, I'm posting this from the LiveCD of Crunchbang Linux. If this is right then I'll go ahead and install it. I just want to know if this is proper.
I have never partitioned before or installed an OS before, sorry for the dumbfuck question.
Thank you in advance.
EDIT: And then there's this:

I can't live without a middle mouse button
highlight anything from right to left and then use middle mouse button to paste, try it.
Holy shit I never knew that. Does that work in Windows too?
Doesn't work for me on Windows.
Free server until the billing cycle runs out, turns out the performance is fucking terrible. Reinstalled to a CentOS image.
First to login as root with password facepunch and manages to change the password into something of his own gets it.

Hey guys I bet you'll never be able to replicate this:
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/Steam.exe
result:
Steam Error: Make sure you have write access to the steam folder.
Then I try:
cd .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/
wine Steam.exe
Shit works.
I already tried sudo chmod -R 777 the folder. :v:
