I'm piss sick of windows, and I'm considering flattening my windows partition and shoving ubuntu on. How is gaming on linux, does WINE work well?
How is gaming on linux, does WINE work well?
Depends on what you want to play I guess. I've gotten everything I've ever wanted working, just thrown in some .dlls and profit. Not sure abut some uber-DX11 stuff though, might be more troublesome. You can use an emulator for windows as well of course, wine isn't the only true path.
What the fuck is the middle mouse button even good for? I never found it useful...
I use middle mouse more often than right click
You can use an emulator for windows
Hypervisor.
How is gaming on linux, does WINE work well?
No.
Hypervisor.
Or an emulator.
Or an emulator.
hypervisor or compatibility layer. There are no x86 emulators available for x86 platforms, that would be stupid and redundant.
Which distro should I put on my Netbook? I don't want Windows 7 Starter on it
Which distro should I put on my Netbook? I don't want Windows 7 Starter on it
arch
NOT ubuntu netbook remix, unity is pretty shitty yeah arch or if you're going to be using the computer for work or school go with mint or something like that
NOT ubuntu netbook remix, unity is pretty shitty yeah arch or if you're going to be using the computer for work or school go with mint or something like that
Is mint 10 doing better now? I heard there was something up with it
Should I use Arch, Linux Mint, or Fedora on my netbook
Linux mint if you're new or lazy. Arch if you want control.
wc -l */*.php *.php
Get the total amount of lines of PHP code in a folder and subfolders. Also outputs line numbers per file. Good command when you want to brag about line numbers. Of course you can change the extension. It will work.

It doesn't count empty lines and comments.
anyone here ever written a custom printer driver? [editline]31st December 2010[/editline]
sloccount works better. It doesn't count empty lines and comments.
i love that there's always a better way to do things especially if you understand the building block concept of the unix way
anyone here ever written a custom printer driver?
I played with writing a driver for a usb-operated strobe light but eventually scrapped the idea
Anyone know if it's possible to do "reverse" SSH? Laptop, out in the world, connected to public network, connects to my server, I somehow get notified of this and then I can connect to that laptop through the connection, punching through NAT. Or just SSH that punches through NAT would be nice too. Thinking about making my laptop the most trackable thing in existence, just in case it gets stolen. I've been thinking about miredo and then connect through IPv6, but I'm not entirely sure that would work reliably, or at all.
Should I use Arch, Linux Mint, or Fedora on my netbook
Try Arch. You will get a lot of experience and the installation documentation is very easy to follow.
sloccount works better. It doesn't count empty lines and comments.
Omit empty lines and comments? No way!
im going to go with linux again but i cba to install arch again, it's a hell with this computer. would ubuntu be okay? i'm goin to replace GNOME anyway so i dunno. i want an easy-2-install distro that doesnt contain so much crap like ubuntu. also best ide/text editor for web development?
Just a quick question, is Linux Mint better when it comes to battery life than Win7? I'm considering installing it for when I'm on the go.
Just a quick question, is Linux Mint better when it comes to battery life than Win7? I'm considering installing it for when I'm on the go.
This I'm debating between Arch and Mint
Battery usage is about the same.

If you want to go ultralight, I suggest crunchbang (Debian-based openbox distro). Also, for ide/text editor, it's mainly preference. Try out a few and see what you like. Especially vim or eMacs.
After receiving news that there are broadcom drivers for certain wireless chipsets (of which includes the on installed in notebook), I've installed Xubuntu as a guest OS. As seeing that the drivers work fully, and seeing that everything else also works fine; I'm thinking of replacing Windows with Xubuntu (or other Linux). Convince me otherwise. I typically use my laptop for media and web browsing.

For those who are wondering about linux for their desktops, if you are on the go a lot, the little power you save from LXDE (lubuntu) may be worth it.
you mean laptop?
you mean laptop?
No, desktop.
