Is it possible to have one PC that has Internet transfer the Internet connection to another PC that does not over a phone line?
I have an old-ass laptop with only a phone line, no Ethernet.
2.6.37

Can anyone help me send audio over my HDMI cable in Linux Mint? Can't figure it out.
When ever I try to boot into Arch from my USB
I get the error cannot find the root device or something then I go into this
[ramfs /]
For some weird reason, I can't boot any linux distros using a newer kernel than 2.6.32 o_O
When I try to boot any of the mentioned distros, I get this stupid host bridge window error thing. Any thoughts?
Hi guys I've been wanting to move from Microsoft Windows 7 to Linux for a whilte now, so far a lot of this is really overwhelming.
I mean I realise I can run a lot of modern games through Wine, I'm just worried does that mean when a new game comes out it won't be able to run for a little while until the support is there?
Plus will running games through Wine hinder their performance? I'm a TF2 player and don't own the greatest PC (2.1GHz Intel Dual Core + 8600GT Nvidia) so I wanted to switch to Linux partly due to this (far from my main reason so don't think much of it) in hopes of getting better performance (as Windows is tied down with shoddy performance due to flashy vistas and useless services). So basically I'm just asking what are the pros and cons to running games through Linux?
I've seen a lot of cool looking skins and stuff in the "Post Your Linux Desktop" So far I love the level of customization Linux provides, but am worried that it's far to complex to use or to edit, which is not what I want I simply want an easy, clean and simple OS, another question, are edited skins easily obtainable for Linux? I like some of them and if they're easy to implement that'd be great.
I'm about to install ubuntu, but what does "installation size" mean? Does it mean it it'll run faster or slower, depending on what I set it as?
Most ZyDAS, Atheros, intel, Buffalo, and RealTek chipsets work out of the box. Broadcoms are easier to get working now, but can still be a pain in the ass sometimes.

Where are you seeing this
It might just mean how much of your hard drive you have set aside for Ubuntu to use. As long as you give it a little bit of room (15GB would be fine but lots of large documents would fill it up) it should be fine. Just don't expect 700MB of space to be enough for a full install

It was in the Ubuntu Installer. I set 3gb.
I can remember somebody somewhere on FP posting a pic of setting up your own fileserver using Ubuntu and Samba(?). Went through different steps such as installing Ubuntu, what packages to remove, how to enable SSH, the works. Can somebody repost that?
2030: Linux 2.6.37, now available on CentOS.

I'm guessing you just did WUBI.

Don't expect good gaming performance, Anything else though? Yeah it's usually faster than Windows.
I'd at least keep a dual boot because it sounds like you want to play games a lot.

Don't install CentOS if you want bleeding edge software.

IIRC the pictures tell you to get Xubuntu and setup samba then remove the desktop or something like that.
You could simply setup FreeNAS or install Ubuntu server edition and setup samba on the command line.
I think that FreeNAS would be the best solution.
I'm going to stop wimping around and install Arch on the weekend. What window manager should I use, though?
openbox
openbox
yeah that's what i was thinking but i was waiting for other's opinion
Fluxbox, if you want tabbed windows.
Is there a way to control fan in Linux Mint?
I hate how my laptops fan always go up and down constantly when usign google chrome..
I solved my sound problem. I uninstalled Alsa-oss and now sounds can play simultaneously. Hurray! I had to restart though.
VLC still errors, but it does play the music now.
Could anyone help me with setting up a static IP on Ubuntu 10.10? This is for a Minecraft server.

Huh, funny.
Even after doing an rm -rf /* as root, exit worked. Everything else was obviously broken because the programs had been deleted.
At least the uptime on that machine can be stupidly high since you literally cannot run any programs on it. Can't even SSH into it.

This is for an older version of Ubuntu.
I am trying to follow this guide http://shibuvarkala.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-setup-static-ip-address-in.html
However my interfaces file is only openable as read only because I am not the author of the file. How can I edit it?
You need to open it as root (you might be familiar with the sudo command).
What do i have to do to enable visual effects?
If i need graphics drivers, where can i get those?

I can't repost, but the short and nasty version should more or less be
sudo apt-get install tasksel samba smbfs
sudo tasksel (run through the quasi-graphical setup for SSHd, it's extremely straightforward)
sudo mkdir /my/shared/folder
sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
[set up the config as needed, guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/serverguide/C/samba-fileserver.html#samba-fileserver-configuration ]
sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-and-configure-compiz-fusion-in-ubuntu-9-10karmic.html will take you through basic graphical setup. Ubuntu should detect graphic drivers and offer them as restricted - it'll have a pop-up icon on the start bar, otherwise you'll need to do some research.
