I wanted to try out ubuntu, but i didn't want to lose Windows 7.
Problem is i have no idea how to do that, i tried to use the windows installer on the ubuntu site but it just tells me it cant find a Device/harddrive/dr(#4 to 7 here)
I downloaded the Ubuntu ISO and mounted it and it says it can't find it
Teach me how to do this, i feel dumb for not being able to install a os correctly :saddowns:
You can burn the iso to a disk and then change it to boot off the DVD (in bios). Then when the installer starts, you make a partition when it asks where you want to install (go to advanced).
Actually, the easiest way to try out a Linux distro danger-free is simply to run it in a virtual machine. It's not too hard once you have the right settings, and it'll run well enough if you have a fairly recent processor.

don't use wubi
Boot off a livecd or use a virtual machine, wubi is utterly broken and more trouble than it's worth.

That man speaks the truth. Shrinking a partition, making a new one, and replacing the MBR is the most retarded way of trying an OS. Getting rid of it becomes a problem as well, since you need to Erase a partition, Extend another partition and rewrite the windows MBR.
Try the thing in a virtual machine. It's really simple and it's easy to throw away. If you want to make sure that it will work with your current system you can boot the CD and it will allow you to run the OS from the CD without any problems. This will allow you to check if your hardware is recognized.
If you want to try the OS, don't use Wubi and don't install natively. Later on, if you like the OS and want to keep using it you can install it (NOT WITH WUBI) all you want.
I'm trying to dual-boot Arch with my existing Vista installation. Shrinking my Vista partition was no problem, but installing seems harder.
I have a Dell laptop with broadcom wireless, and I'm doing a netinstall with unetbootin since I have no blank CDs around, but it's not recognizing the wireless. I can't figure out how to get the wireless working.
IIRC, a recent Linux kernel version included the open-sourced broadcom drivers. I've tried to set up unetbootin to extract the core ISO of the latest Arch which I already have, but it hung and dropped me at a bash shell which could do pretty much nothing. I had to use the 2008.something iso which is the one it includes, but it's far older and doesn't include the wireless drivers.
Am I fucked here or what?
Does it drop you to a recovery shell while starting up from the CD? Try ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_2008<month>
For me, it was ARCH_201005.
This is from memory, so it might not work exactly.

Well, a good choice, should be recommended if you have a good enough computer.

I didn't use a CD, I used unetbootin
I heard Debian is about to do a release, anyone else heard about this?
from what I know, that is correct.

I'm about to reinstall 7 on a new partition, what can I do to make sure Linux is still bootable?
It was just released
What. Dammit I just burned a disc and installed it too. And the computer I installed it on is caseless and I have to drag everything out the closet and short it to get it running.

Linux will still be bootable as long as you don't let 7 re-write the MBR and take out grub.

I know, after having to figure out how the configuration files migrated I had to install it again. :frown:

How do I do that?
How do I do that?
I'm not sure of it, but for most re-format methods it should be along the lines of advanced options and manually partitioning and installing.
Google's your friend on this one buddy.
Found it

Google "/bin/sh: job control disabled" or whatever, I remember finding something about people who were having the same issue but with a USB drive.
Thank jeebus for the new widespread support of my wireless card!
so I downloaded the fedora 14 iso to try it out in qemu, it started boot and everything perfectly fine.
Then this

Seems that it can't find your root partition.

It works for pretty much every single other OS iso that I have, excluding the SkyOS beta 9 iso.
I hate when it says "Sleeping forever". It's so morbid.
I decided to reinstall mint onto my laptop. I went ahead and installed playonlinux, steam connects fine and everything, but as soon as everything is loaded, it closes on me. It is getting irritating.
never mind, I fixed it.

Yeah, it's like when you put your dog to sleep.

I have cache envy.
I'm running Arch and I want to do a nice rounded update. But every time I do the cache fills up instantly and it halts the process. Now thanks to pacman being to super flexible powerhouse that it is, I was able to make it download to an arbitrary folder in my home partition with --cachedir, but it still niggles me that I am having to do something like that in the first place.
Thoughts?
Trying to install 10.10 server on my server, but it errors with "there was a problem reading data from the cd-rom". I'm using a USB stick to install. What do?

Now this is starting to piss me off, why is nothing in *nix simple? :byodood:
Installed LAMP, made a phpinfo(); page, and it returns a blank page. All the guides for apache have different folder structures and it's a complete mess.. I should really go back to windows.
If there is a critical error in PHP, it returns a blank page.
<?php
// Show all information, defaults to INFO_ALL
phpinfo();
?>
Try copying exactly that, it works for me. Copy it exactly.
I got it working, and i have no idea how.
Though dreamweaver won't save files with vsftpd, UUUGHHHH
