I'm trying to run a minecraft server automatically when Arch starts, I've tried adding it to rc.local and it doesn't seem to work. How would I go about doing this so I can have it open without PuTTY.
Why won't any Linux dev understand that nobody wants to get everything from your fucking 10kb/s svn then fail to install it because some dependencies are not satisfied and you want us to download them from your fucking site, nor compile every single fucking file ?
I've been trying to install Enlightenment 0.17 for one hour now. Sure, it's a beta, but I shouldn't have to try ten different repos (all of which are not working anyways) to get it working

Because it's really difficult and time consuming to build the source for every package manager available. And most people using a beta version don't whine about compiling.

This is why a unified package manager (Or one that supports all package file formats) should be implemented.

There is, it's called RPM. It's part of the LSB (Linux Standard Base). It's you Ubuntu and Debian users screwing it up.
Switched to SFTP, same problem there. Why won't it work? :sigh:
So, is there any easy way to stream media to an Xbox 360 from linux, preferably Ubuntu, or do I have to install XP on my would-be media server?

I'm going to take a quick guess and say this is what you're looking for?

Ushare only "works" well enough to show that there is a shared folder, but the Xbox can't see anything in it.
I'm not smart enough to compile FUPPES either, or to even set up a shared folder that my windows machines can see, apparently.

Meh, I PPA everything whenever possible. Don't care much for .deb files unless it's the only wat to get shit done.
Generally, I'm pretty happy with pacman: it's so simple and easy to use that a GUI is unnecessary. It doesn't get much easier than "pacman -S xorg".

From my unfortunate and short experience using pacman and arch I found it a bit hard to get everything to stay in a rapid-use stage. Dependencies would break within the pacman core package(such as xz-utils getting removed at random points, then having to go through the ten-point checklist that is non-existent to get it back and working).
Personally, I think if arch could get its shit together in terms of core dependencies(especially for distro-centered tools herp derp) it would be more widely used. But that much made me go away because I want to know I'm working on a stable system or at least one that can be easily fixed in the event of an error.
Pretty much in a compare-contrast manner, I like arch because of the idea of package management, user customization, etc. I don't like it because it will break for no good reason. I like debian because it keeps everything solid, but it's not very customizable, and individual centered.
I've never had problems with pacman and dependencies.

Anyone have a clue?
Throwing ubuntu 10.10 server edition on some old server i got for free
any suggestions of stuff i should do with this thing? I'm gonna host a minecraft server for my house.
I'm getting a new hard drive and I think a priority will be to dual boot Windows 7 and Linux. What distribution/desktop environment would you guys recommend? It seems like I'm spoilt for choice. A colleague at uni recommended Debian and KDE.

Sounds good
Though if you got a stable work OS it might be fun to muck about with different distros.

I don't even understand what it is you're trying to do, you're only explaining how things aren't working.

Arch :D Never had any problems with it, ever.
I installed a all-in-one bootloader for my Ocz Rally2. But when I'm on backtrack 4 (r1)
It wont allow me to put any files on the disk. The weird thing is, it allows me to put things in the "virtual" enviroment (ie ; downloading a wallpaper to desktop works)
When trying to write to it it says something about write protection. How to remove it ? Im logged in as root and the drive is 16GB (about 10 gb freespace) so that shouldnt be a problem.
also I'm running backtrack from the ocz.
Oh great. I just set up mint 10 and firefox 4.0b11 and when I go in a thread, this happens:

I blame these lines on Compwhizzi.
They only happen when the page is zoomed with control+mousewheel on firefox though, so I'm fine at 100% zoom.
I had the same issue on windows, it's compwhizzi's fault, not linux

:buddy:
Installed vsftpd & fixed some ssh stuff, and now i'm trying to connect to it via dreamweaver, but it won't save files. It can rename, create & move, but not save files. Maybe it's just dreamweaver.
So whats the best fan controller out there for linux? ACPI isn't helping at all, in fact, it might have made my fans louder.
Nice OS list:

Oh, it works on my laptop with CS4.. Then what's the problem?
So, is there any easy way to stream media to an Xbox 360 from linux, preferably Ubuntu, or do I have to install XP on my would-be media server?
Another option is the PS3 Media Server. As you guessed it's primarily aimed at streaming the PS3's but they've thrown in support for a whole whammy of other devices too. It detects devices automatically, and you can even set things like subtitles for streamed/muxed MKV files from the Xbox!
It's a really neat bit of kit.
You can find out more at http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
I've been a avid ubuntu user for the past year or two but I think its about time I took the next leap in a more difficult distro. Any reccomendations? I was thinking of trying Arch, or openSUSE.

Arch, but please for fuck's sake, read the wiki properly.

It's pretty hard to screw up an Arch installation.
