I've used PCBSD before, it's actually pretty terrible compared to a proper BSD installation.
Symbolic links are like shortcuts, except they actually work.
I want to add that they are at file system level, not like the ones in Windows
Yeah, windows links are just files that windows recognizes as links.
Shortcuts are treated like ordinary files by the file system and by software programs that are not aware of them. Only software programs that understand shortcuts (such as the Windows shell and file browsers) treat them as references to other files
Is there any way to get rhythbox to turn down it's volume when people are talking over teamspeak?
Seeing as I can't find a plugin from teamspeak nor from Rhythmbox, I don't where to look. or what to look for, even.
Is there software that would administrate the volume levels? f.ex. when there's sound from one application, the sound from another one is lowered
edit:
running latest Ubuntu. According to the "app scanner" feature of Teamspeak, there's a couple of music players supported by Linux. I'll jjust try out one of those and see what the app scanner feature does.
edit:
eh, app scanner wasn't as interesting as I thought it'd be. Back to square one.

Feel like getting rid of windows compleatly.
What distro should i use?
Also need to know what filesystem allows for large files (10-25gb)
ext4 will allow up to 14 TiB
pretty much every modern filesystem allows large files like that.
I haven't installed my graphics drivers yet. How come Compiz is still working? :v:

If you want to have an uber easy start go with Lubuntu or Xubuntu. If you want a bit of a challenge then get Arch and just follow their Beginner's Guide.
Yes, I love Xfce and LXDE. I fucking hate KDE and Gnome.

It will probably run pretty slow and you wont be able to use any of the effects/composting.
I got mint about half an hour ago, and i have two questions:
1. How do i start .exe files? I try to start it but then this comes up: [img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5606926/Screenshot.png[/img_thumb]
2. I can't use my internet because belkin doesn't have drivers for linux (N+ F5D055 v2). Can i get working drivers or do i have to get a new network adapter?
Have you installed Wine?

What graphics card do you have?
You're probably using an open source driver that's capable for 3D.
Almost all Ati cards will have out of the box 3D, and depending on your distro Nvidia would too.

I think so, the icon for steam.exe is a wine glass
I think so, the icon for steam.exe is a wine glass
Try right clicking it and going to Open With, and select wine.
okay
[editline]07:27PM[/editline]
I right clicked and chose "Open with another application" but Wine wasn't there.

I hate KDE, but Gnome is somewhat ok to use. But I'm not sure which I like the most, Xfce or Openbox.

The icon doesn't mean shit usually. Wine is probably not installed. When I didn't have Wine installed I still had the icons.
You can check if wine is installed by running
winecfg
To install wine just do:
sudo apt-get install wine
in the (i forgot the name) cmd?
does it need internet?

terminal
yes if you're installing it
When I install the ATI/AMD proprietary fglrx graphics drivers in Ubuntu, it hangs at the Ubuntu splash screen on boot. Does anyone recommend any other drivers or way to fix this problem?
Linux Mint recommends me to install the same drivers too, I don't know if I should take the risk of it getting stuck on boot again.
oh hell, i'll see if i can get internet
[editline]10:37PM[/editline]
I'll have to wait until i can move my compy downstairs, so i can plug it directly into the router
you can't do shit on steam without an internet connection anyway
I'm running FreeBSD, how can I get the system monitor "conky" to start up during boot, or at least when I enter startx after logging in? I know i need to edit some config file I just don't know which one
add conky & to .xinitrc
add conky & to .xinitrc
it worked! Thank you!

I just said it as an example.
Not really Linux related, but whatever. I might get Ubuntu, so because my computer is shared with my semi computer illiterate brother, I had to ask if he would be ok with it. I said It's a different operating system and that It would be a lot more flexible and expendable. Because It's a different operating system, he says he doesn't want it and I'm stuck with vista.
Any way to change his mind?
NOTE: I'm new to linux and would really like to experience it, so some tips would be nice.
dual boot
