Not really Linux related, but whatever. I might get Ubuntu, so because my computer is shared with my semi computer illiterate brother, I had to ask if he would be ok with it. I said It's a different operating system and that It would be a lot more flexible and expendable. Because It's a different operating system, he says he doesn't want it and I'm stuck with vista.
Any way to change his mind?
NOTE: I'm new to linux and would really like to experience it, so some tips would be nice.
Use Wubi, it creates an image file that it uses as its system drive, so you don't have to change any files. If you don't like Ubuntu, then you can just uninstall it from the Add/Remove programs menu in vista.

Ok, but how do I get back to vista?
dual boot
How do I do that?

Never. Use. Wubi. AT ALL!
Quick question, if I were to dual boot, will Vista be running in the background?

no.
Quick question, if I were to duel boot, will Vista be running in the background?
no, when you boot the computer you get a choice of choosing the os to boot
[editline]11:38PM[/editline]
and it's dual boot

Whats wrong with Wubi? I just downloaded Ubuntu(I'll advance to other linux OS's later) and I'm not sure what to do, do I burn it to a blank disk or run wubi/run something else?
dual = 2
duel = fight to the death
[editline]11:39PM[/editline]
broke my automerge
Sorry, can't type today. Can you answer my question?

put it in the same directory as the .iso file then run it
Wubi often leaves you with broken or otherwise unstable installations. burn the ISO to a disk and reboot your computer with the disk in the drive
Ok thanks
When I install the ATI/AMD proprietary fglrx graphics drivers in Ubuntu, it hangs at the Ubuntu splash screen on boot. Does anyone recommend any other drivers or way to fix this problem?
Linux Mint recommends me to install the same drivers too, I don't know if I should take the risk of it getting stuck on boot again.
Which ATI graphics card are you using?
I am using a 5770 in Gentoo with no problems on the fglrx drivers, but then again I do not have a splash screen.

I got it working with Arch, so everything is fine there. Tho I do have another problem. I installed KDE and decided I didn't like it so I installed gnome. I noticed that in gnome, I still had KDE applications (konsole, etc...) and so I uninstalled KDE. Now I have no terminal in gnome to do anything. Any tips?
You still have xterm. It comes with X.

Could you explain further on this?
Hit Alt+F2
Type "xterm"
hit enter
I just tried installing, but it didn't work, even when I edited the bios settings to boot from cd and everything. I'm getting a new flash drive soon so I'll try that. I'm installing ubuntu btw. If that doesn't work I'm using wubi. What can go wrong with wubi? Will I still be able to dual boot if I install with wubi?
You will get a shitty experience. Your Linux installation will simply break for no good reason at all. Things will simply not work and there will be no fix for it.
You might also be lucky and have it run perfectly fine.
It also makes you less of a man.
Well I tries the bios settings, cd doesn't work so if USB installation doesn't work what option do I have?
Network installation.
Ok, but what the fuck is wrog with wubi?
it's hit or miss on systems. personally, i've never had problems with it the few times i've actually used it
Here's the thing with Wubi. Every other installation fucks up dramatically. It's generally unreliable because of that. Yes, it's the easy way to do it, but it doesn't give you much. There's a big chance that something will be broken. It's also possible that you may only notice after a while. Forcing you to try to reinstall it or to give it up completely.
If your computer can't boot from disk then there's a problem. Are you burning the image the right way? Do you simply put the ISO on a "data disk" or do you actually burn the content of the image?
There's no good reason why your computer shouldn't be able to boot from CD...
If you install it using the "normal" method (from live CD) you'll have to resize your windows partition (if you don't already have a free partition or drive for Ubuntu to sit on). Ubuntu can help you do that quite easily. I'm not sure on how reliable Ubuntu's (Gparted?) partition resize feature is. When ubuntu installs it will put GRUB as the bootloader (replacing window's) It will give you an option to either boot from windows or ubuntu (and some other choices). You'll still have windows and an easy way to access it.
One thing, if the partition resizing fails, your windows installation might be corrupted and unable to boot. (I don't think these things happen often tho.)
Is a 700 mb disk good enough to have the content in it? Tes I did get the content of the image to the drive instead of just bringing the file to the disk. So is 700mb big enough?

Also will I be able to select my OS withot installing with wubi on startup?
I have a feeling that you didn't burn the cd right
Probably, I usually don't burn anything to my CDs because I have a huge harddrive. When I tried bruning it said that i couldn't, maybe I need new CDs.
Picture, is this right? (692 mb)

Follow their step by step instructions on their website, it's extremely simple. You can't mess up.
On boot tap F10 and select boot from cd.
I did, I even set it as the primary drive to load. It just won't.

As in it wont load on boot or wont work at all?
