After a lot of headaches, I settled for Lubuntu, and I love it. However, is there anything I should know about Lubuntu, or just Linux in general?
SSH is awesome. That's the only thing you really need to know. Embrace it, love it, spread it.
Excuse my stupidity, but what is SSH?

Is it me or the proprietary nvidia drivers support KMS on 270.30? Either that or they're using uvesafb, which I doubt because switching from a tty to another is instantaneous, and the startup sequence is actually running at a nice resolution. Using Arch here.
Just installed fedora 14 xfce and I'm wondering how I find networks to connect to
It uses Network Manager, so there should be a little icon in the taskbar that you can right-click on.
Can somebody explain this joke to me? http://xkcd.com/644/
Okay, so for a little while I didn't have a flash drive with which to install Windows, so I went to ubuntu (already had a flashy with it on there). It worked okay, except for the fact that it displayed 1280x1024 on my 1920x1080 monitor. Not too surprising, hadn't installed drivers for my graphics card yet (6850), it told me to install proprietary drivers (guessing fglrx). Immediately after restarting, it gave me the ubuntu splash screen, but right before it got to the login prompt, it blackscreened. I've now got windows on there, but I'll probably be dual-booting with some other distro later. I'm sure there's a fix for this, but what's a good alternative driver to use in place of fglrx?
Can somebody explain this joke to me? http://xkcd.com/644/
I think it has to do with Linux supporting USB 3.0 before any hardware existed. I don't know though.
It uses Network Manager, so there should be a little icon in the taskbar that you can right-click on.
That brings up "configure VPN" and allows me to add a wireless connection, but I can't see a list of nearby networks like I can with windows 7. I guess that means fedora doesnt detect my wireless card, how do I go about making it see the card when its an internal one?
We'll need some more info help you with your card. run this is the terminal
lspci lsusb ifconfig -a iwconfig
This isn't necessarily a Linux question, but does anyone know how to get the Windows taskbar to show up while using Unity in VMWare? It's working well, but I want to actually be able to use the Windows taskbar.
Can somebody explain this joke to me? http://xkcd.com/644/
hardware comes out all the time that Linux doesn't support but there are constantly projects out to get shit working with Linux
Nifty, I discovered this little command that lets you list all the users:
awk -F":" '{ print "username: " $1 "\t\tuid:" $3 }' /etc/passwd
Is there a simple guide on minimizing centos? I followed this http://anchorite.org/blog/2006/11/13/minimal-services-on-centos-44-mini-howto/ and got it down to 64mb ram usage. Although I just bought a vps and it only has 10 processes running and 13mb ram used.
Could you run ps aux and post results? Don't even have to post results really, shows what's running so you can figure out what you can still remove.
How can I install Java with a .bin file? Unless Ubuntu supports .RPMs.

Try sun-java6-jre
Try sun-java6-jre
It says I already have it. How can I set the Oracle JRE to the default? [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline] Is the OpenJDK the reason I can't move in Minecraft (Classic) and have to restrt my computer to do anything else?
Type java, see what it reports. Should tell if you're using Sun's Java or OpenJDK.
sudo update-alternatives --config java

Type java, see what it reports. Should tell if you're using Sun's Java or OpenJDK.
It's "java -version"
Just java also prints out if it's Sun, it's right at the bottom.
05:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
Here's your problem, most likely. There should be most probably a way to get it working. Lemme do a bit of research. [editline]3rd April 2011[/editline] We'll need to see if the driver is installed. If it is, it'll need the firmware. Run:
dmesg | grep -i firmware
It should tell us if a module is requesting firmware.
