I don't see what people hate about Gnome 3. Yeah, it's a bit...different from the good 'ol Gnome panel, but it certainly feels more efficient to use, even on a proper desktop. (to me, anyway) I love how many of the default Gnome applications integrated into the Shell, it's a very nifty feature.
The problem I have with it is that they took gnome 2, removed everything that is configurable, then stuck a rather buggy gnome-shell on top.
KDE :P
LXDE :P
Fixed.
Openbox.
A working system running at 60mb, suck it.
I was criticizing Gnome3 for being so much of a hog like KDE.
Believe me, if I'm not running Awesome I'm running Openbox. My favourite DE's though are Lxde and Xfce :p.
I enabled the testing repository in arch. Over a gigabyte of updates.
Including 2.6.38 WONGA!
Currently running LXDE-spin of Fedora. Couple of questions.

Solved three out of four of them. Can anyone help me with globalmenu?
Installed gnome 3, it's crashed 5 times already. Way to go.
I can't set my wallpaper properly, and none of my keybinds work.

Hurray! it doesn't work!
Atleast it doesn't look like this.

Does the new GNOME come with the green terminal text?

Bad luck, I suppose. It works fine for me unless I let Nautilus manage the desktop..then it crashes everytime I plug in my phone. v:v:v
Is it possible to use Skype in Emapthy?
Repost.
Repost.
Yes. I found out that there is a Skype plugin for Empathy from every Linux user's best friend, Google. In the future, please search on your own before asking here. Forums are the fourth line of defense in problem-solving:

First mess around with the program, clicking likely buttons/whatever.

Search the manpages, package repo, or whatever locally on your computer.

Then Google for a while to look for clues.

Ask if even your best Google escapades fail you.

If all else fails, try again after a break (recommended), learn to live with it until an update, or try using a temporary alternative.
Don't take this as me telling you not to post here. Feel free. This just stops simple problems like this from clogging up the forums.
Holy fuck e4rat really makes a difference to boot times. By inducing overall filesystem fragmentation (IE moving most used files to one area) I've dropped boot-to-desk times from about 40 seconds to ~20 seconds.
For Archers, it's in the AUR; follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/E4rat
For everyone else, either check your repos or build from source at http://e4rat.sourceforge.net/ (debian packages available there too)
Is there a way to limit a user to only being able to have a single sshd session at a time?
[editline]9th April 2011[/editline]
seem to have done it by adding a user in limits.conf instead of using a group.
The more I use Arch the more I love it. You can find ANYTHING in the AUR, but even the official repositories are quite large.

I even put alias pacman='yaourt' in my .bashrc, there's no point as using Arch's pacman as a normal user anyway since it doesn't do su/sudo checks.

..that's a good idea. Imma steal it.
I just use Packer for the AUR.
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
Simple as "sudo packer -S "app""

Same as every other AUR helper.
Is there really any real difference between yaourt, clyde, etc?
Does Arch Linux's xf86-video-vmware not support OpenGL or something? I tried installing GNOME 3 and KDE4 in a VM following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_Arch_Linux_in_VMware but both of them failed without graphics acceleration.
[editline]o[/editline] In separate VMs, of course (KDE4 and GNOME)

VM graphics acceleration sucks, or for some does not exist. Both of those will fail in many VMs.
If I use LXDM, is there any way to completely remove all GNOME/KDE shit from Fedora?
Yes, I'm that kind of person.
Honestly, just install openbox then any Lxde apps that you want.

FUCKING 403 ERROR
So i've got Debian Squeeze and Pure-ftpd setup on my server, made some shell scripts for adding users and stuff, but now i've come up with a problem. Basically the server requires a login from with a account, but i would like to make it so if no username/password are specified, (For instance the ftp is opened in a browser, possible?) it automatically get chrooted to a folder with read only acces.
[editline]10th April 2011[/editline]
Also, pure-ftpd gets started with /etc/init.d/pure-ftpd start, and i have no idea how to specify arguments to that. For the passive port range i had to use -P Port:Port, but making a file named PassivePortRange in the config folder with Port Port in it also worked, i basically need something like the -i parameter, which disallows uploading from anon account.
Check inside the init file.
fuck centos piece of shit, fedora is by far superior
